A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita@Former-Member@outlander@Appleblossom@CheerBear@Sans911@Snowie@Former-Member and all those who pass by I have a question re medication and its effects. I am growing my hair out from a very straight and short pixie into a bob and low and behold my hair is going curly at the ends .... it is the weirdest thing. I can only put it down to some kind of effect from the medication I am on as I went through menapause a couple of years ago now and my hair was dead straight then.

Anybody had a similar occurance where your hair has suddenly decided to do its own thing on meds ... not that I mind I like a curly bob and will try and keep it like that (I presume as the layers grow down the curls will go ...) it is just a novelty.

Re: A long rave

hello @Bunniekins

I have natural curl and wear it in a medium length bob...

as far as medication goes...different for each person...

the only time that I have heard about change to curls from medication is after chemotherapy...loss of hair..then grows back curly..

yes style it the way you want as it grows... a new emerging greenpea xx

Hey @Bunniekins and @Former-Member I thought we could have a more general chat here and keep the other thread focused on NDIS. I'm over it this afternoon. Need to let that topic be for a day or two.

How has today been for each of you?

I went out with bro to a silent auction warehouse, cafe, op-shop and to get rubber car mats for my car. Then we came home, he had a beer and I had a bottle of mead (yum yum) over lunch and we watched a movie called American Heist. Great movie, set in the 70s which they did so well. Great music too. We didn't finish it as we both started napping after having the drinks. Sil was at a workshop all day.

I just discovered the mead, based on ginger beer but honey and spice added, - sooo goood.

Looking forward to hearing from you. And you too @Mazarita - you social butterfly! Looking forward to catching up with you xx

@Bunniekins re curls - I think it could be changing due to different hormones post-menopause. I am in that phase too. As I get older the greys that come thru' are thicker than my hair has ever been. My hair has always been wavy but very fine. Nowadays it's curlier, but I asked for it to be cut to enhance the curl last time I had it cut.

@eth @Bunniekins

whatever is a silent auction? sshh sshhh

when I first read you had a bottle of mead...I assumed the alcoholic mead...my goodness you would be asleep...

yes I have learnt that there are some styles that I cannot have due to my soft curl...I hate spending ages drying...straightening...styling...products...I often do the drip dry look with a little bit of serum when dry..

am listening to music with headphones on...was dancing before but set off sciatic nerve so not too brilliant an idea there...

have to go and start dratted dinner...am so not keen on cooking lately...

when feeling better I love to cook main meals...they never taste the same...so if husband tells me that he likes something...I say well better enjoy it then because it will not be the same next time laugh..

three curly companions....

@Former-Member a silent auction - there's all sorts of old junk but some real gems amongst it - everything from tools to old records to plants to furniture - each item has a reserve price and you get a form and bid on the form. Then on Tuesday whoever bid the most gets an email saying to come in and pay and collect it by Thursday, then it happens again over the weekend. Bro usually bids ridiculously low but often gets what he's bid on. e.g. a water pump for our rain tank for $100, a new 3 man tent for $40 etc.

The mead I had was alcoholic! 1.8 drinks in the bottle - so I was a bit sozzled

I love cooking meals to share too. When I'm only cooking for myself it's very basic. Thursday night I made an African peanut curry for the first time and we all loved it. I'll def be doing that one again. One of my hobbies is finding new recipes to share with the others.

Re: A long rave

@Bunniekins My hair has never been black, darkish brown at it's darkest if that. It's been long for most of my life. Went grey, starting at 30 from the shock of something awful that happened to one of the babies. The grey never recovered and spread slowly over the years until I'm all over grey now, and quite a few years beyond menopause.

After taking a collection of vitamins for depression and a couple of other meds, I noticed my hair turning black at the front. Now I have quite the salt and pepper look. Black strands in amongst the grey! It's quite elegant looking when I do a proper updo.

After the first pregnancy, I got a perm, at first it went full Afro - what a look on me. Then, 2 days later the curl dropped to dead straight in my normally wavy hair. They said it was due to hormonal changes. *shrug* Turns out I had 2 perms that year, the first and the last.

I think @Bunniekins with pixie hair would be so cute, and with curly ends on a short bob, so sweet and light hearted.

@Former-Member @eth gosh, haven't heard of silent auctions for so long! Some bargains to be had for sure. I loved silent auctions, a bonus if you got the item, still fun if you didn't. win win.

Mead is lovely, a good honey mead is one of the very few alcoholic things I will choose to drink.

@Former-Member your hair sounds beautiful I love that salt and pepper look. How interesting the black came back ... now that has be puzzled ... I wonder why .... I love updos so classy. I remember getting two perms and they flopped both after a week on my once very straight hair haha. Psst the afro thing happened to me too lol:D

Re: A long rave

My Mum’s hair started turning dark again in her last few months @Bunniekins @Former-Member .....

I was told it was a result of the medications she was on. I had never heard that before.

Interesting, isn’t it ?

Re: A long rave

@Faith-and-Hope It is interesting Faith-and-Hope (sorry about your mother passing) ... I was googling a minute ago and came across an article about a particular medication that I am on which it says can have hair loss (great ....) or hair goes curly!!!! Bingo.

As long as I dont end up a bald pea I am happy with the curls.
