A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

that sounds like a nice day @eth makes the tedious job of grocery shopping more enticing..

I have a physiotherapist appointment this afternoon...

I need to check what I can use on torn muscle and leg as can't use any blood thinners...

have been using a gel for back strain in past that they use on horses ..works wonders...this should not be moderated as no names...

so will ask physio if I can use my horse gel laugh..

might venture to a shop..just dont want to run into anyone I know..

Re: A long rave

@Former-Member I haven't finished most of the courses I've ever done. Usually because something I thought was a better opportunity came up, but in reality at least some of those times I shot off on a hypomanic adventure. I tried to go back and finish one of the courses after 25 years or so practicing massage therapy - it was a diploma of massage therapy and would have meant I could get registration and insurance....BUT ... I was manic when I started then 3 months into it I crashed into a major depression and realised I couldn't have other people's health in my hands when I was struggling to manage my own. Put it on hold for a few months then just as I was ready to pick it up again (it was an online diploma with pracs in a different state that I was meant to go to) the school announced that everyone in my intake had to start again due to changes in the course. I just went stuff that and quit. Looking back over the 5 years since then I know I shouldn't even have started again, it was a pipe dream and not at all realistic. It cost me $4000 for that experience. Also while manic that year I took myself to Denmark and Canada but spent the 3 months away in another major depression. And that cost another $10000!! I blew the last of my inheritance instead of using it to improve life at home.

The courses I've enrolled in this time around are only 2 afternoons each - a baby step by comparison to some sort of TAFE or uni course, but at least it's a start, and they didn't cost much.

Rave on!

Hope the physiotherapy session is a good one and not too painful. Remember to ask about PNF stretches that I told you about, if you want to of course. They work brilliantly for sciatica.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Pepsimax, good to see you. Yes, I do really like art group. Will play it by ear whether I go or not as the morning progresses. Still only 9am here.

@Former-Member, yes, I tend to start fairly slowly still in the days but get wired up as it progresses. Yesterday's headache is related to a chronic migraine condition. Probably the intensity of yesterday, and the heat and storms here triggered it (I have a theory atmospheric pressure amounts to some of why I get migraines). If I stay at home, I will do some meditation at some point.

@eth, what a pity you can't swim because of the foot injury. Hope just getting out of the cabin is rewarding anyway.

Re: A long rave

Hi @outlander how are you today?

@Mazarita enjoy the art group if you get there, otherwise have a peaceful day. I really hope your headache improves.

@Former-Member I know the feeling of not wanting to run into anyone you know very well. It doesn't happen so often down here as I hardly know anyone.

Re: A long rave

Sorry to hear you're feeling like that @outlander. Hope things improve over the day.

I'm ok today, feeling a bit more motivated coz I'm going out soon with the support worker. Doing my shopping at a different shop for a challenge. I've wanted to go there for a while.

Do you have a list of things you can do to make yourself feel better?

Re: A long rave

@ethwhen i went to the gp on monday it was shocking. i got my mhcp sorted however when i read it it honestly feels like a lie and doesnt represent how i feel at all and my gp attached a letter from my psychiatrist so they are aware that i see them and there latest update however i found it to be very judgemental including her thoughts on my weight and also she recorded what i was wearing that day. i was in older clothes for work and was saving time and petrol by seeing her then going straight to the horse work. 'my clothes were old, worn out and tight fitting' cnat get any more judgmental than that. and then i tried out a new social group yesterday which was meant to be for young people 18-30 however some were close to 40, and all of them knew each other through a mothers group so really it was just another mothers meeting to them and me sitting on the outside not knowing how the heck to relate or what to say to them. even the services and guest speakers that are going to be attending are more for parents like getting people back into the workforce after a baby. i didnt have expectations of what it would be like however when they say young people i thought it would actually be for young people like my age and coudl relate to them that way. i dont mind they are parents but it wasnt advertised to be the way it was yesterday.

ive got to take pop to an appt soon, been to work, and need to do some housework eventually

i hope you enjoy the time with your social worker today

@Former-Member Hi mohill what is it with kitty kats always trying to trip you up lol. I remember seeing a cartoon with my children where the resident cat would go around in circles around the legs of the father of the house hold at the top of a staircase. It was very funny because it as so true 😄
