A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

@Faith-and-Hope hoping the pvf doesn't last too long. Really good to hear your family is paying attention to what's happening for you.

@Mazarita sounds like you're slowly recovering from the exhaustion. I agree with avoiding the all nighters - that's why you don't see me during the night these days. I still have very broken sleep but am not awake for as long as I used to be. I get up briefly (often for a ciggie) but am back in bed much sooner and usually succeed in getting back to sleep. I suspect that with bipolar our energy cycles change much more easily than those without it.

Hi to you too @outlander

Re: A long rave

@eth, yes, I kind of knew that you were avoiding the computer during the overnight wakings. It's a good idea and great that it is helping you. Agreed that we are probably much easier to trigger on some physical as well as mental things with bipolar. Anything happening with you today? Or maybe it is a pottering Sunday.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita sorry to have missed you yesterday. Maybe we'll catch each other today. The only thing I did yesterday was a bit of grocery shopping. Bro and sil leave tomorrow for a week so I needed to be prepared for that. The only time I'm likely to get out is Wednesday with the support worker to my psychologist. No plans again today but may get around to some filing and a feedback form for PHaMs - 17 pages!!

What do you have on today? How's the big clean up going?

Re: A long rave

Good morning, @eth. Always good to hear from you. I understand your new pattern of avoiding the computer on your night time awakenings, and support that choice and recognise its wisdom. But I do really miss our long chats from the time when we both used to be awake overnight. We had some great ones!

I did nothing yesterday except spend time with C and a visitor, a special friend I haven't seen for a year. Sometimes we go more time than that without seeing each other, but have known each other over about a fifteen year period now. Was so good to see her again.

Is the dog staying with you during bro and sil's absence this time? I hope so, for the extra sense of security. Wow, that's quite a feedback form for Phams! The longest ones I had to do were one to two pages. Sounds like a good plan to do some of that paperwork.

I am just aiming to get the bathroom thoroughly cleaned today as I kind of overdid it physically on Saturday and have found the recovery from the stiffness, soreness and tiredness slow. But the bedroom is so lovely to sleep in now! I feel it was worth pitching in for all those hours to achieve the goal.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I also miss our raves. Lately I find it hard to come up with words, depression is getting me again. I just feel like napping all the time.

Yes the dog will be here with me.

Hope the cleaning is progressing without you overdoing it energy-wise.

Re: A long rave

@eth, that's okay with the delay. Sorry to see you sliding into depression. Do you have a psychiatrist appointment anytime soon? Good that the dog will be there with you while bro and sil are away. Today's jobs at my place will be less strenuous than Saturday's and yesterday's, I hope. My moods are sliding around a bit at the moment, partly related to just doing more physical work than I'm used to, I think. Also probably related to just feeling my feelings more on this higher dose of anti-depressant. Still seems more beneficial to be this way than how I was with no energy though, so I'm sticking to the new dose. Hugs to you. ox

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita psychiatrist isn't til May but psychologist is tomorrow and I'll tell her what's going on. If she thinks I should, I'll book an earlier ap't with the psychiatrist. Perhaps my meds need tweaking too. I can't use anti-d's as they make me manic.

Good idea to pace yourself today. I think the one room at a time approach is sensible.

Hugs back to you

Re: A long rave

I remember that about the effect of ADs on you, @eth. But it seems like there was a different balance of your current medications that saw you a bit elevated a while back. So I wondered if there was an in between dosage that might work to bring better balance between the two. Good idea though to talk to psychologist about it and be guided most of all by her advice on when to see psychiatrist.

Re: A long rave

hello @Mazarita @eth

apologies that I have not posted here for a while...

I seem to get caught up in responding to someone with whom I think that I might be of some help...even though it does not always turn out that way...

the powers of language...especially in this form..

I am feeling blech too...am also trying to ward off black dog..although..I don't like that expression...I love black dogs...no offence if anyone else uses the term though..

for me it is the dreaded numbness...

I am trying to be active too...managed to hurt my back and leg whilst trying to get physically fitter after isolating myself for so long...I go into auto pilot and think that my body can cope with how fit I was before..hmmm. so think it is hamstring issue...in sympathy with thoracic issue...keeping me awake that is the hardest bit..even though am on ad and sleeping tablet at night...

I know that you both have probably been here and done that...so get where I am at..

focussing very hard on lack of sleep...creating further insomnia...etc etc etc....merrygoround..

@ethvery good idea keeping away from technology in evening....I will be putting that back in my selfcare plan again...

one day at a time...sorry am vague cannot remember much more..I think that you are looking after a family dog? that will bring new adventures and happy moments..

rambling on so will leave it here..

I always have you both in my mind even if I might not post on here...

take care as always

Re: A long rave

Hi @Former-Member, great to hear from you.

Have been wondering how you have been travelling with the health issues.

It's good of you to prioritise caring for others on the forum. We can only do our best. Sometimes it is helpful and sometimes less so. But we have good intentions and it's better than silence most times I think.

I'm feeling a bit black doggish today too (though I too like black dogs, and black cats). Not too serious at this point but, my moods are a bit slippery slidey at the moment.

I hope you can go easy on yourself with the activity at present. You have a lot on your plate emotionally and mentally. On the other hand the exercise and stepping out is a good thing too. I know what you mean about going too hard and then slumping afterwards. I think that's part of my problem today.

Hugs to you.
