A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

@outlander I know the feeling of being in bed for the day. For me it is usually depression that will do it, or anxiety that has totally fried my nerves. Is it either of those for you?

Tonight I'm pretty good. The past couple of weeks have seen improvements after two solid months of severe headache and nausea 24/7. The feeling of coming out of that is great as I was scared it would be like that for the rest of my life!

Re: A long rave

Its a mix of depression burnout and a bad night nd bad where all my physical issues wanted to flare up esp headache and pelvic pain where i cant move and even breathing hurts so makes getting pain relief very hard.

Im glad your good tonight. Headaches and nausea 24/7 dont seem good. Is tht to do with mania?
I have headaches everydy too but usually mostly managed except today 🤦‍♀️

What are you up to tomorrow

Oops sorry @Mazarita forgot to tag you

@outlander sorry for delay in responding. I somehow missed that you had made this post as my notifications did not seem to show it. Anyways...

Your physical pain sounds awful. I know you have had physical problems before. Do you have any more answers to the problems you get that way? Pain relief is tricky and sometimes it's probably just best to rest, but hopefully not too much so it becomes a habit like it gets with me at times.

My recent two-month headache and nausea experience is still not diagnosed. There were a bunch of other health issues during that time too so may be due to any one of them. In any case they are passing for now, which is great. My problems today have been much less, mainly been due to my neck problems which give me a lot of grief every day now, and other pain with osteoarthritis. I was also diagnosed with Fibromyalgia at the end of last year, which is a chronic pain condition.

Re: A long rave

It mightve been because i didnt tag you @Mazarita

I dont have an answer for the pelvic pain because the gyno has been to busy shoving medications and iuds at me rather then investigating. I see him again in a few weeks and will be asking more about it. I have been incapacitated a few times from the pain. It actually woke me up in tears and then even breathing hurt becauae of the natural movement it causes. Couldnt even get up for ages for pain relief and when i did i had to get straight back to bed.

My headaches and neck pain mostly stem from a neck injurybut no diagnosis or through tmjd. i see a pain specialist this Friday who will also be my neurosurgeon for the dental nerve damage thats been done.

My stomachs not that great but i do have an answer for that which is newly found food allergies and intolerances. Thats been getting better very slowly now ive been eliminating those allergies. I get other symptoms from those too but only if i come into contact with what im allergic to.

Maybe it was a fibromyalgia flare up causing the headaches? Sometimes if headaches are bad nausea can come with it so usually cant get rid of one unless you control the other if that makes sense?

Hiya @Emelia8 and @Adge. Noticed you under the like button. Hope you are going okay tonight.

Re: A long rave

@outlander I wonder if they've checked you out for Endometriosis. I have never had that but know it can cause huge pelvic pain for those who do. Could be worth mentioning to gyno if that's not already been checked. Your symptoms sound extreme and way beyond the usual period pain, though I know that can get very bad too.

To diagnose your neck problems I think they'd have to do x-rays or MRI. It was the latter test that showed the serious and multiple disc degeneration in my neck. The test was to rule out other serious conditions that could have been causing my range of other symptoms aside from my neck. Good news is that my brain and spine were okay but the test showed the neck issues clearly. Ongoing physiotherapy and pain control are really the only treatments as far as I know.

Dental nerve damage sounds like no fun either. My recent awful two months started with an infected root and an extraction of a back molar. From there, things went from bad to worse. I had an extreme reaction to antibiotics which gave me excrutiating inflammation all through my large bowel. That was found on CAT scan at hospital Emergency. I ate so little for that two months I lost 5kg, which I ususally find impossible to do because of psych meds. That's the only good part of the whole ordeal as far as I can see.

Seems good that you now know about some allergies and can avoid some triggers of that.

Hugs for all you go through.

Re: A long rave

Ive been asking him to run tests besides an ultrasound @Mazarita but in his words 'i dont want to run unnecessary tests' ive done and tried what hes asked of me. Those pains are usually random as well, just like today theres no actual reason for it. Those pains have happened in a shopping mall before and made me throw up because of the pain. That wasnt a fun experience but gyno still thinks unnecessary.

Did you get like a bone density scan for your osteoarthritis?
The only thing that sometimes helps is chiro and then massage afterwards. Ive tried physio osyeopathy and even bowen therapy.

Wow!that reaction sounds awful! Did you have to be in hospital for 2 months?

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita I'm so glad to see you around.

I have not noticed you here in ages - Although maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough.

I was just posting about the Topic of (& personal) Grief - So I'm not feeling good, after that.

It's a bit triggering - my Dad's Anniversary is coming up on March 20th, 5 days after my Birthday.

I'm sorry you had nasty headaches & nausea for months - Very worrying for you, & hard to deal with.

Adge
