A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Hey @Adge hope you're getting some proper medical care today and that treatment clears up your wound. Take care my friend.

Re: A long rave

Thanks @eth

I finally got to see a GP Dr (not my usual Dr) late this afternoon (Booked Yesterday) - that was the earliest available appointment.

Hopefully I've finally turned the corner (healing up).

GP said that Locum Dr's Steristrips (10.00pm Saturday night) -

- appears to have held wound separation together.

GP/ Nurse put new Steristrips on.

Then go back to see my normal GP on Wednesday morning.

Wow, maybe I can finally relax (& let go) now....

Adge

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Adge so glad to hear you feel like you're turning the corner and can let go. What a relief.

Hi @Anastasia @Molliex @Shaz51 nice to see you here supporting each other.

A big hello to @Mazarita in case you drop in sometime. I'm wondering about how you feel about me being more comfortable here in this corner of the forums while you've been away - since you started this thread. Initially I mostly wanted to keep the thread going while you took a break, but as things do the thread seems to have evolved into more of a general chat space than a long rave space. Tho some of us (me!) do still do long raves here. Anyhow I hope life is continuing to improve for you and that we'll see you back here when you feel like connecting again. I miss you every time I log in xoxo

Good morning also @Appleblossom @Bunniekins @Maggie @Emelia8 @Judi9877 @Angels333 @MDT @BPDSurvivor @Former-Member I can see you've all tagged me and will read your posts shortly.

Hope today has started gently for everyone passing here today.

I've been keeping occupied as best I can in my offline life - trying to stay motivated and connected with the world around me rather than losing many hours dithering around online as I did for a few months when covid distancing first kicked in. Had a catch up with my coordinator of supports on monday and then the podiatrist yesterday. Also had a phone support from one support worker and walked to the podiatrist with another. Some of the time with CoS and sw's has been spent finding out about the real options for housing that are currently out there. Most of the options are unaffordable for me but I now know that CatholicCare does a list of affordable accommodation for women who've been through dv (anyone can apply for them) and it's reduced my fear somewhat of if I end up needing open market accom. while I'm still on the waiting list for public housing. And my CoS said he will phone the housing dep't and find out what's happening with my application for me. I'm scared to make the call myself because if it's anything other than good news I'll probably fall apart.

Planning to have increased hours of support this week, with another outing on Friday (probably a bike ride and to the shops) and then again Sunday morning to hopefully find a tai chi group at a local park that I've been told might be happening there. It will be fantastic to get back into it if we do find it.

I've also been getting more involved with the local disability alliance and had a zoom meeting on issues and actions during covid times (this time it was about employment discrimination and also the Royal Comission into abuse of people with disabilities that's on at the moment). I've joined the members action group too and been asked to scribe for them for the monthly newsletter. I'm also going to be the DJ for the music hour this week! Should be fun. Plus I have a writers group on tonight and a mental health group tomorrow night. Most of these things are happening via zoom so still online, but good to be connecting with people in my community who one day will meet in person again.

And psychiatrist today, psychologist tomorrow, both via facetime.

So... it's no wonder I feel like I'm busy!!! That's my rave for today.

Hope today is one of the better ones for all reading this. Stay safe and stay kind everyone xx

WOW, I am with @Molliex that is one busy schedule. Happy though you are "out" there making connections. Good luck with finding that Tai Chi group on Sunday, I did Tai Chi as part of the Buddhist lessons I was taking and it feels so good. Hoping today is sunny and there are moments of peace for you. @eth

Re: A long rave

Such a lot packed into your days @eth ... like @Molliex I am tired just reading it all.

I have a clinical psych appointment today also. 😔 I hope yours goes well.

Really happy that you have someone who is following up your public housing application progress. Hope the news is good there. But it sounds as though you have looked into alternative options which may be suitable in the interim, should you need to leave your brothers place before anything comes up.

Sounds like you are getting on top of things, for which I'm really happy for you. Life seems to be back on an upward trajectory. 💖👍

@Molliex ... I know you have been stuggling through for now, but happy to hear how much your little daughter helps to lift your spirits and keep you on the straight and narrow. I hope the new psychologist who specialises in neo and post natal issues is of benefit to you, and helps to get you through all the heartache you've endured of late. 😔💕🤗

Hi also to @Anastasia ... hope your boy is doing okay, although I believe I read elsewhere that yesterday was not such a great day for him. Trust that can be turned around soon. How are you coping with it all?

Hey @Adge ... read of your more recent trials around your surgery wound. Hope its all good now? I've missed seeing you around as much as I would normally expect.

@Former-Member 🤗🌹

Emelia 🌸

Re: A long rave

Hey @Emelia8 @Former-Member @Molliex my internet's playing up so I could disappear, plus I have a skype with adult child at 10. Hoping it can happen without glitches.

Yeah I used to do tai chi in a heated pool twice a week until covid happened back in March. Very much hoping to get back into it, but not prepared to do it in a room full of people, that's why I'm counting on it being on at the park. Have a support worker booked to take me to it. 9 on Sunday morning.

Hope you have a gentle day with some highlights in it xoxo
