A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Late night rave. Have not read back on messages since my last post yesterday or the day before. Here because I've had the weirdest day and am distressed now, both physically and mentally, with a feeling of high anxiety, like I might have a panic attack, faint or even suddenly die. A few minutes ago I took an anti-anxiety med that I am prescribed prn, but which I haven't felt the need to take for a few months.

This is a confused rave, and long, so please skip over if or when it gets annoying, depressing or troubling. Take care of you as much as you can, because sometimes stuff we read on the forum is not always helpful.

I was in Emergency today being checked out for heart symptoms. I've been having a lot of palpitations daily, growing more and more over the past few months. Today I developed a pain in my upper back near my shoulder bl*de on the left side. It wasn't an extreme pain, but just unusual and felt internal, not muscular, but it may have been muscular, who knows.

This new symptom caused me some concern because I am in the process of being tested for the palpitations that have increased in frequency over the past three months. Worried that pain in the back might be another heart symptom, I rang 13HEALTH, the government phone line, and spoke to a nurse. I kind of just wanted reassurance that it was okay and I should just go to my GP next Tuesday as planned. But instead she insisted I go to hospital and called an ambulance to my address.

I am also having symptoms of postural hypotension, by which I mean dizziness and blood pounding in my head on standing after I've been sitting for a while. I was in Emergency last September as well, at the time of my first and most severe experience of this. I had to walk almost literally like a snail to avoid making this worse. It persisted for hours in Emergency, along with tingling and numbness all up and down my spine, into my arms, and seemingly centred on my brain stem area, where I had a headache, but not really severe.

But, like today, their tests to rule out worst possible crises, all came back okay. That's great, but also frustrating, because I feel like I'm getting more unwell, with bizarre and very troubling symptoms, but none of the doctors can explain why.

Blah blah. So much more I could say about the distressing symptoms going on since September last year. But I'll spare anyone reading, and myself, more raving on that.

Is it all anxiety? Both my friend and I said to each other tonight, that we feel worried without knowing what about. Perhaps it's to do with the corruption of the US senate hearing that just aquitted Donald Trump, the Republicans having the numbers and preventing any witnesses from being called! Donald was out on Twitter saying he had been exonerated. But how can you say that, when it's your cronies that have given you the get out of jail free card, and there has been no hearing of evidence.

Perhaps even more, it's the bushfires, and climate fears of me and millions of others, feeling the world is heading down a very bad path, wondering if there's any turning back, and what's to become of us all, including the animals, plant life and trees, in other words, life as we know it.

I feel mentally and physically out of whack and afraid in myself, and the world seems to me to be similar. Is it me or is it the world, or both? And does this have anything to do with my physical problems, that seem so troubling and new, or am I actually sick without proper diagnosis, and that's causing my anxiety, my body knowing there's something up, even if the doctors can't figure out what.

Every question seems to have multiple possible answers, and I'm finding it hard to live with it all tonight. I also feel kind of angry. Pissed off at everything, and myself, for being flooded with black, negative thoughts.

That is more than enough for now. I don't always feel this bad. A day in Emergency can do that. But I have been depressed since I set foot in Australia after my month overseas.

Despite my own belly-aching, wishing everyone here well. I hope to get back to reading earlier tagged messages, when I can.

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita Sitting with you in peace. How frustrating and worrying to have such palpable physical symptoms and not get any actual diagnosis. Are you also seeing a regular gp who is monitoring all your symptoms? I find having a therapeutic 'relationship' can be helpful so that someone has a full picture of us and our life and challenges/issues. You've had fairly major health challenges all the time I've known you and I totally understand the feeling of getting a bit cranky about having all the feelings that come with not being well and not knowing the cause or what can be done to improve things.

I also really get that there are plenty of good reasons with what's going on in the world both in Oz and internationally, for feeling anxious and losing hope. And angry at the powers that seem for their mismanagement (to say the least). I think there are a lot of people feeling that way.

I'm also thinking, if you're anything like me, there is 'endogenous' anxiety at play. Where the anxiety is deep and acute and what I describe as 'finding a hook to hang its hat on'. There are sometimes adrenal/biochemical problems involved also - might be worth asking to have that checked out too.

So with all that going on in combination I feel you strongly, and feel for you. Sending all my love and warm wishes and the hope that being able to write about what you're experiencing is helpful. And that reflecting on what you've written and being supported can help you find your path through it all. And that you have a good team including psychologist/counsellor to discuss it all with offline. They might help with strategies to get through the feels.

I still have days where I just have to get through the next 1/2 hour and the one after that and sometimes that's all we can do. Delve into our wellness toolbox and just find activities that pass the time gently until our feelings lift a bit. Hoping today is a better day for you. Take care xx

Re: A long rave

Good morning, all,

After my spit the dummy last night, I feel better this morning, though groggy from the anti-anxiety med I took last night, double dose, because I needed it. I have now caught up on earlier tagged posts. Thank you for the warm welcome back here on the forum.

@eth: so awesome you have performed and had recognition of what you do with writing!!! Huge congrats. It's not easy, especially after not feeling confident enough for it over a long time! I really admire and am heartened by the massive improvements that have happened in your life, especially since securing the NDIS support. It seems you have taken one steady step after another (even if they felt wobbly at the time). Great that you will have some time on your holiday with your writer friend. A coincidence that I reconnected in the middle of last year with my special and close friend from grades 5 and 6. In fact, she travelled to Europe with me!

Thanks for your post today, after my dark rave last night. Yes, my GP of 10 years is great. She is treating me for the very real physical symptoms of whatever it is I have, even without specialists being able to diagnose what's going on. Seeing my psychiatrist tomorrow for the first time since before I left for overseas. Saw my psychologist in the past couple of weeks, another appointment in two more. All these professional supports are reassuring. You raise some interesting thoughts about possible explanations for all this, especially in relation to anxiety that may be kind of built in.

@Appleblossom: amazing you are now a grandmother!!! I hope you are enjoying living on your own, and being able to think and spend more energy on you for a change (at least while alone). Good to hear your 2020 is starting well, a contrast to how I'm feeling. It reassures me that the whole world has not suddenly turned into me, feeling miserable at the turn of the new decade. Makes me feel that perhaps not all is lost.

@Bunniekins: thanks for your wonderful words, that send your bright beautiful spirit over the wires, to those of us who need some pea.

@Maggie: I appreciate you telling me you share some of the feelings I wrote down last night. I don't see well wishes as trivial. Almost always, I find them helpful and supportive.

@CheerBear: thank you for your love. Love to you as well, and as always.

Thanks to all who have sent good wishes. Same coming back from me to you. ❤️
