A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth

Sorry for the delay ! Has been a pretty intense week for me....

Further to my first ever post here on sane forums Ongoing battle ..

I went and saw my psychiatrist who initially treated and diagnosed me back in 2013 when I was 23 years old after having experiencing my first major depressive episode resulting in being "unfit" to work for 6 months.

Seeing him this time around; I have been given a new diagnosis and feeling pretty overwhelmed with all the information I have been given… (am going to bullet point to try and summarise as I’m feeling pretty dazed)

  • Diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder Type 2 – I have spent the last 6 years on an antidepressant (as well as a lot of different tries of other SSRIs/SNRIs prior to my 2013 depressive episode) thinking my diagnosis was Agitated Depressive Disorder & Major Anxiety however after telling my psych of the many waves of ups and downs I have experienced through my 20s; he feels this is now the right diagnosis.
  • As my psychiatrist is located 2 hours away he has recommended I find someone closer to me (I’m located on Northern Beaches, Sydney) to supervise and assist me in commencing a new anti-epileptic drug to treat my “highs” as well as looking into DBT Therapy (dialectical behaviour therapy).
  • I have been given a small dosage of an anti-psychotic drug to try and alleviate my mood swings in the meantime whilst I get to my GP to obtain a referral to a new local psychiatrist that can help me with the above.

Currently sitting here at work at 4.00pm still feeling dazed from these meds. Feeling extremely anxious and fearful not feeling that I have any control of myself or my reactions to external. The whole idea of having a new treatment plan is overwhelming me, especially now I am in a new relationship with my dream man. He has been so so supportive through all of this however really finding it hard to allow his support as I’m fearful he will get over it and leave.

So to summarise; I am spending my days wishing for them to be over; trying to repress all of these horrible thoughts yet on the surface am projecting myself as just “a little tired”… my industry of work (property management) does not allow for emotion or weakness..

Am losing hope so any advice or anyone that has been through this diagnosis; I would really love to hear from you

Hello @Handouch

I would like to welcome you to the forums but get that it is also a place for difficult stuff. Sorry that you are down at the moment. I hope that some of the supports start falling into place and so you new partner and you can live a good life together. The supports doing the jobs they are meant for. SOme people I know try a number of different work places to find something that matches them ... eg a lady moved from corporate work to admin in non profits ...

Take Care

Re: A long rave

Hi @outlander @Appleblossom and @Handouch

outlander and apple thanks for the feedback re new support workers. Hope today has been one of the better ones for each of you.

@Handouchwell done sharing about what's going on for you. I have bipolar 1 and have written about how I manage it on the Managing Bipolar 1 thread or you might find some helpful stuff in the thread Managing my Bipolar II or simply by putting 'bipolar' on the search bar and lots of threads will be listed for you to have a look at. I know how confronting it can be when you first get the diagnosis, but it will help you at least to research it and work out what helps you cope and stay stable. And also know how it can be hard going when adjusting to new meds. It can take a little while to stabilise on them, but I believe it's really worth persevering. One thing that was eventually recognised by doctors is that for me ADs actually trigger mania so I can't take them. It's taken a while but the meds I'm on now keep me really stable and that means I'm able to make progress in other areas of my life. Because of community guidelines I can't talk much about meds except in the most general of terms, but it sounds like you are heading in the right direction. Also be careful not to give identifying information inadvertently. If you want to talk some more I'm happy to listen and respond. Sending wishes that things get easier for you and that your man continues to support you well.

Take care, @eth

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth

Glad to hear you have got your new support workers scheduled in and ready to go. You have done very well dealing with all your interviews as well as going about your every day jobs.

All is not too bad with me at the moment. Just the usual anxiety and stress problems that one gets. But considering the time of the year they are not escalating too much, for now.

Be glad when the silly season is over though.

Welcome to @Barenbroken2019 @soul11 @Lilaclady

A big hello to everyone out there and blessings to you. Hope today was more of a good day than a bad day.

@eth that sounds good, hopefully it works out. I'm ok, had a few bad days. today is much better, thankfully.

@Handouch I am so sorry that you are feeling like this. my step son suffers from everything you've named, he struggles daily with it. don't forget to reach out for help, I know our boy finds it difficult to talk about. he also has a hard time with what is actually going on within his mind. always here for a chat if you need it. take care

Re: A long rave

@octavia Thank you for reaching out.

still coming to terms with it all..I am slowly starting to learn more and more about bipolar II as it appears in my hypomanic periods I also project an "obsessional" behaviour..(last week it was the excessively stalking exactly where the sydney bush fires were located, this week its scoping any knowledge I can get on this disorder and reaching out to others going through the same thing!)

have managed to book in an appointment with my gp for Monday so I can take the next steps to seeking help with a local psychiatrist - so there's some productive and positive

Am looking forward to feeling a bit more at ease once these meds stabilise; feeling like it's all a dream at the moment!

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth Yes I had my tooth fixed, thanks.

The Dentist said if that tooth breaks again - I shall need a Crown (costing about $1500).

I'm not keen on that idea at all, so I'm hoping that does not happen.

Adge
