Dealing with intrusive thoughts - my struggle!

Dealing with intrusive thoughts - my struggle!

Edit: This has evolved to become a vent thread and supportive thread. Everyone is welcome to come, vent. say hello, and especially seek support with their intrusive thoughts.

--

I've been newly diagnosed with GAD, depression and OCD. I'm in my mid 30s and have been dealing with this stuff my entire adult life. The tipping point was severe post natal depression that I almost didn't survive. I'm getting help for me, but also because I don't want my kid to pick up my issues.

Often my intrusive thoughts are about world events, but at the moment they're suicidal. They push their way into everything i do/think and I'm so exhausted, just trying to ignore them. It's scary and I'm suffering insomnia. I'm currently off work for this week while I adjust to new meds, and my GP and psychologist are suggesting hospitalisation.

I've been trying mindfulness and exercise, as well as limiting alcohol (which I find hard).

So I guess I'm looking for suggestions and support. This mental health journey is so new for me and I feel very alone. I want to make it through this.

Thanks for reading, I really appreciate it. I just also want to state that I am currently safe and with family.

I'm doing pretty well thanks @Molliex 🙂 How are you? 🙂

I really enjoy space movies / tv series to. Do you have a favourite couple?

My favourite series is battlestar galactica! 🙂

With movies, not really sure.. the star wars ones are cool as are the new marvel ones.

@Gazza75 I will watch almost any space film, and i even enjoy the bad ones. Recently I watched a documentary called Apollo 11, about the first moon landing. It was amazing - all this unseen footage and recordings. Highly recommend watching it. In recent years The Martian, Gravity, and Interstellar have been films I have loved.

As for TV, my current favourite sci-fi series is The Expanse. So, so good.

I just got back from a punishing workout at the gym, so I feel good now. Wrote some things down to talk with my psychologist about, so hopefully it will be a useful appointment.

Hi @Molliex , I saw the doco about Apollo 11, it was really fascinating! It was a very risky mission that they took a lot of chances with.

I've also enjoyed the films you mentioned. I to enjoy most of the bad ones lol 🙂 I can't remember the Martian, but, I'm pretty sure I have seen it. I've been enjoying the Expanse a lot as well. Have you seen Firefly? Its a lot older, but, not bad in my opinion.

Well done on the workout 🙂

I have seen Firefly @Gazza75 , it's amazing how much contemporary sci-fi has taken inspiration/ideas from it. It has been really influential. The Martian is the one with Matt Damon growing potatoes on Mars, haha. Life is another space film that not many saw, but I really like it. It's from last year I think?

Thanks 🙂 Hope you have a nice afternoon.

Thanks @Molliex , I'll have to try and track Life down. I usually get my movies from the local libraries. I used to get them from video shops, but, they have all faded away into nowhere! I really enjoyed Firefly and Dollhouse which is by the same director. The latter is a bit creepy but it really suckered me in lol

I'm heading out shopping after work which normally wouldn't excite me much, but, today I hunting for a frame for some art that I did so I'm pretty excited. Going to give it to my brother for Christmas. He's a pain in the butt to go get things for.
