Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

Hi All

There is a thread operating on the Lived Experience Forum under Night Shift where members who are having trouble sleeping for any reason give a bit of a shout-out, to see if there is anyone else sleepless and looking for company. It's been such a great thing, I thought I would start one over here too.

I have had the odd few nights where I have woken up on and off, and my kids have been having a bit of trouble some nights too, depending on what has happened during the day.

Being a carer can be lonely too, so if you are making an after-midnight cup of something hot, and wonder who else might be doing that too, maybe have a look-in here and see if anyone else is about.

Hi @Former-Member. I'm okay or trying to be. I was hanging out the washing this morning thinking of a conversation I had with my Mum about how much better the Hills Hoist was than the washing lines that attach to a wall and starting sobbing 😥

@soul
You have had heart wrenching losses in your life in the last few months. I found that as the baird said "to weep is to make less of grief" and that a good howl is often necessary especially early on, sometimes later on too. I like the comparison of grief to waves coming in at the beach, sometimes pounding in, sometimes rough, churning things up, other times just a ripple. Learning to live again with just memories of someone we love takes time.

Oh @soul, I understand, the smallest memories become huge and present and good and sad all rolled up together. The tears came up for me every time for 2yrs, still do (with less intensity now). There's no escaping it. I call them waves, grief waves, pushing it down just makes the next wave bigger. We have to face it in the moment - wrap ourselves in a hug - and wait for it to pass. I light a candle each time, have a cry, sometimes talk to them, imagine what they'd say, pray. Its exhausting, so make sure you be kind to yourself, self care, rest breaks, eat ya vegies, meet up with friends. This first 6months will be the hardest. Hang in there Soul, we've gotcha 💜

Re: Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

Some hot chocolate would be so nice. I'm not very good at treating myself with nice things (I have to work at it).

I don't think I've had hot chocolate in a year or more...

I keep trying to think of nice ways of rewarding myself for 1) de-cluttering the house (& throwing stuff out).

2) getting a comfy chair that doesn't hurt my back (instead of the broken ones).

3) Being assertive with my work managers, & asking to drop a day's work - to accommodate essential appointments that were being frequently cancelled by work.

So far I've not come up with any self-care type of reward that makes it all seem worthwhile.

Perhaps you could start with small treats like getting a nice brekky cereal, making a nice dinner (getting a special ingredient), getting that magazine or indulging in gourmet tea or coffee.

Getting good seating ... sounds like a necessity not a luxury. We got a lovely suede lounge suite with two recliners from acquaintances who were upgrading their furniture for a bargain price and it was in A1 condition.

I found that Mr Darcy responded to my self care needs far more favourably than I thought he would (probably as some end up benefitting him). He wasn't keen on getting the sofa but didn't take him long to see how much better it was than our old one that was worn out. He has also been better at buying me birthday and Christmas presents.

You are important, budgeting self care time and a few $$ for it is essential.
