Topic Tuesday // Self Esteem & Mental Health // Tues 13th Aug, 7pm-9pm AEST

Sometimes when we have navigated the reality of complex trauma, mental health diagnosis (or even the challenges of being a mental health carer), it can be extremely easy to forget to direct unconditional compassion towards ourselves.

Many people are familiar with the voice in our heads that can ruminate heavy and unkind words towards oneself, sometimes over the course of so many years that we don't even recognise it. The output of this can be lower self-esteem; most definitely a common symptom during mental health recovery.

Join @Former-Member for this Topic Tuesday as we soundboard ideas around improving our self-esteem whilst living with complex mental health challenges

I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Self Esteem & Mental Health // Tues 13th Aug, 7pm-9pm AEST

Hey,

im a bit late, so I start with your first question. I tried to raise awareness at work when I came out of hospital the first time. A couple of months later, my boss started undercutting my decision and eventually they discriminated against me and made me resign. Apart from struggling with my mental health issues I then lost whatever I had left of self esteem and it took a long time to build a little up with my therapist and psychiatrist. My best friend who I initially met in clinic, didn’t understand why I wasn’t getting better after a few years and our friendship broke apart (so did I). So I think the understanding at workplaces and of complex mental illnesses in general and that they may be long term is still something that is not addressed. It doesn’t help that our government supports this kind of thinking by not funding continuous care. Complex mental illnesses cannot be treated with a 10 session care plan.

i feel worthless anyway and having that confirmed just makes me feel like I shouldn’t breathe anymore.

@cutiepiekitty Integrating the external and internal worlds can take time. But the most important is the healthy relationship with our internal world. I do believe it echoes outwards. Thank you for this notion, something to think about 🙂

My Mum is a cause of much of my trauma, emotional abuse, & severe neglect - spanning about 20 years. Resulting in Complex PTSD.

So I cannot have a close relationship with her.

I live on the other side of the country (for good reasons).

I agree @Former-Member that a 10 mental health plan doesn’t even begin to help with ptsd and mental illness. It takes long time. More than 10 sessions.

This is where the government is wrong. Needs to change.

Thank you for sharing this @Former-Member I am so sorry to hear about all of these experiences, you sound immensely resilient. You are right, 10 sessions is not really enough for complex mental health challenges - I agree on this front. Regarding your last line, one of our mods is going to send you an email to check in We want to make sure you're okay.
