Topic Tuesday // Self Esteem & Mental Health // Tues 13th Aug, 7pm-9pm AEST

Sometimes when we have navigated the reality of complex trauma, mental health diagnosis (or even the challenges of being a mental health carer), it can be extremely easy to forget to direct unconditional compassion towards ourselves.

Many people are familiar with the voice in our heads that can ruminate heavy and unkind words towards oneself, sometimes over the course of so many years that we don't even recognise it. The output of this can be lower self-esteem; most definitely a common symptom during mental health recovery.

Join @Former-Member for this Topic Tuesday as we soundboard ideas around improving our self-esteem whilst living with complex mental health challenges

I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Self Esteem & Mental Health // Tues 13th Aug, 7pm-9pm AEST

I struggle with this one @Former-Member as when really low I see no strengths in me at all. Not one thing comes to mind.

I tried journaling years ago but it ended up far too negative thst I was told to stop.

Practical things?

i have a therapy book where I have written down things over the years of people, good memories, dreams... but when I’m unwell I feel like tearing it apart, I get very destructive. So it helps when I’m okayish but not when I feel really low. I guess it helps me pick myself up quicker than before?

Re: Topic Tuesday // Self Esteem & Mental Health // Tues 13th Aug, 7pm-9pm AEST

This is a bit left of centre but lately I find trying new things and taking a risk without judgement has been ok. It is really hard if it’s a disaster but learning to live with that without beating myself up is something I’m learning. I am starting to feel a sense of accomplishment just for trying. I did an art class last week and was atrocious at it. Normally I would have flipped right out. I focused on the things I learned rather than my art and it helped me feel like I’d accomplished something. This may be a short lived thing but I’m trying.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Self Esteem & Mental Health // Tues 13th Aug, 7pm-9pm AEST

Hey all @BlueBay @Snowie @Fracturedlight @cutiepiekitty @Former-Member You are very right it is no easy feat. I think remembering too that a lot of our issues of self-esteem were handed to us. They are actually not ours to hold. Yet we must do the work. Knowing that every human is born into the world as valuable and worthy as the next Having compassion for ourselves, our strength and resilience to get us this far.

When I fall into periods of low self worth and negative self-talk I come back to this basic one, "Would I speak to my friend this way? Why am I any different"? We need to almost re-train our minds to redirect kindness inward.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Self Esteem & Mental Health // Tues 13th Aug, 7pm-9pm AEST

@Former-Member there seems to be a trend here. For me it's extremely difficult to hear good things about myself from people surrounding me. I think they are lying. Self worth is non existent for me at this time. I'm hopeful that one day I can and will be kind to myself as I perceive that is the way through the mess and chaos our minds create...it's exhausting

Exercise and gratitude. Helping others in need there is always someone doing it harder than me. Doing something without eny expectations of receing anything in return. Even writing this comment may help someone.

Yes and that is important, getting on top of things quicker is a sign of growth. It can be hard to see our own growth at times @Former-Member
