Something’s not right

What is wrong with me?

What is wrong with me?

Hi there...

I apologise in advance if I offend or upset anyone with this as I have not been diagnosed with BPD or any mental illness at all and I am certainly not a fan of self diagnosing via a Google search, however... I came across this site while doing a search and so much of this seems so relatable.

A long story, but as a child I was raised in foster care by one amazing family in NZ, and although I had contact with my mother and often was placed back into her care, she never really had the ability to be a mother. I watched her go through an abusive relationship with my step father.. I told her about the sexual abuse that was happening when I was home only to be told that that is what dads do to show love so it was a very confusing life for me.

As I have grown up I have had three long term relationships and a few other short term ones and every single time I push my partner away... Whether it is from excessive drinking, extreme paranoia of an affair happening, or just out right anger over simple things... I often feel like I am unloveable and unattractive so I end up pushing my partner away.. Sometimes I feel on top of the world and like I'm a good person and that my partner does not love me like I deserve so I get angry... Then there are times when I feel so low that I drink to numb everything and I become verbally abusive... I can see these things happening and on the inside I am yelling at myself to stop and try to gain control but there is some demon inside me that does this to everyone I care about and love... Then when I have pushed them so far that I can see I'm hurting them... I leave them.. I'm always the first to leave because I never want to be the one that people walk away from. I have always dated partners who are quite over weight and are a bit older than me in the hopes that they may see me as good enough for their standards and that I would be attractive enough that they won't need to cheat on me...

Why do I do this to myself and everyone else? I have very few friends out of fear that I would do the same to them.

Oddly enough, I've never actually "felt" suicidal as such but for as long as I can remember I've always had ideas randomly pop into my head of how I can do it, or even fantasies you could say of when and where I could do it... These thoughts and ideas have never scared me.l and I've never felt compelled to follow through with anything... But I've always felt a comfort in knowing that if things get really bad, I can end it easily enough... When my brain is going on a rampage and the girl inside me has lost control again, these thoughts help calm me down!

I want to be able to have a healthy, trusting relationship.. I'm turning 32 this year, no children and never been married.. I've been engaged twice...

I want to be able to have complete control over my emotional state, my thoughts and who I am... What is wrong with me?

I am sorry to hear that you have been having a hard time with relationships.

I am also sorry to hear you had to endure abuse.

Childhood abuse, and trouble with relationships is a common amongst people who are classified as "mentally ill".

I am not a qualified medical professional and I think that you need one in order to help get a better understanding as to what, if any, underlying conditions you might have that are negatively affecting your behavior in relationships.

Best of luck to you in the future.

Hi @So-alone

Welcome to the Forums. I know for some people it can be a really big step posting here for the first time - so I'm really glad you did.

Just to get some more information, which may help others respond, are you currently seeing any mental health professionals or have so in the past?

Hi @So-alone,

You said "I want to be able to have complete control over my emotional state, my thoughts and who I am... What is wrong with me?"

I reckon no one has 'complete control' ofver their emotional states or their thoughts and who they are.

If you are seeking to know more about what is happeneing for you, that is good. You clearly describe the behaviours that you wish you didn;t act out so you have a good grip on the things you wish were not happeneing and wished you could change.

Change can happen, sometimes though we need to find out what conditions are contributing to the behaviours tat are causing us angst. Youa re right google doesn;t in itself do a great job at diagnoses, but it can help us determine if we are 'fitting' into particualr patterns of syptoms in any given diagnoses.

I was diagnosed early in my 20's with Borderline Personality Disorder. i ignored that diagnoses and got on with life and lo and behold I ended up in a great relationshop that has lasted 24 years. I have since been diagnosed with a few other labels tthat describe my lived experience to some extent, but not all of it.

It might be a good idea to make an appointment with your GP and tell her or him that something is not right and that you would like to find out what is at the core of your difficult life relationships and unhappiness about yourself. Talk through some options with her or him. Perhaps they could refer you to counselling or a psychoatrist for some sessions.

I tis not 'normal' to fantasise about suicide, but I do all the time - Not so much in suicidal iseation but that thing you describe as " if things get really bad, I can end it easily enough." I always look at those times as an indicator that something is going on or something I am doing is not right and needs to 'die'. Its like the brains way of saying, I want "this xx " behaviour to end.

I hope you will consider getting some help - but also be aware that once you step onto that train - life becaomes a mixed blessing, you find out more about what might be happening but you can never go back to blissful ignorance about your own conditions... and with that comes resposnibility too to yourself to take advice, figure out what works and what doesn;t. You get a journey of a very different quality than general unknowing to knowing and needing to do something about it.

Re: What is wrong with me?

Hi all.

Thank you all for your responses.

I have previously had counselling from the age of 6 through to 25, however the bulk of that had been a focus on my childhood and learning to deal with that.

I have tried to see a doctor about things while living in Australia however I was simply given a prescription of anti depressants and sent on my way. Knowing the things I struggle with, I try to work on them internally including my alcohol issues and I often can go months without a drink or "episode" of unstable emotions, such as now... It has currently been several months since I lost control to my inner demon, but I am always afraid and aware that she can come back at any time.

I take all the right steps like eating right and working hard, I study to keep my mind busy, and I've adopted rescue animals to love and keep safe, and admittedly my mental state has improved so much over the years. I'm not sure if that is maturity or me getting better, but I still relapse occasionally.

Re: What is wrong with me?

Hello @So-alone Glad you found this site. I doubt that there is anything wrong per se ... that you are a sum of your life experiences to date.

Lots of people with early attachment issues have similar behaviours to what you describe. I had 2 fosters and parents who tried ... but ... it wasnt really enough.

Its great that you are looking after many aspects that you can control; like self care regarding what you put into your body and mind.

I think plain boring maturity does play a part in settling down.

If you want to get counselling you may be eligible by asking your GP. Keep reaching out.
