Topic Tuesday // Being a male in a caring role // Tues 25 June, 7pm AEST

Identifying as being in a caring role, particularly as a male can be a little challenging at times. As our special guest @Greg_MenCareToo for this event from Men Care too mentions “Caring and nurture are characteristics not often associated with males but every man has a different experience and unique responsibilities in life. The same can be said when it comes to the caring role.”

We are really excited to make the most of the Topic Tuesday event to explore the feelings around identity, challenges and communication when it comes to being a male in a caring role or being a carer who understands the challenges and can offer those insights to others too.

We welcome all of the community, male or not to share their perspectives and insights!

I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

I find it difficult to talk to others. I have a lot of professionals involved from GP, specialists, counsellors, therapists and support workers. My friends know that there are issues in my family life and close friends are aware of the problems. However it is usually talk about what my wife and kids issues are. We never really talk about the effects on me or any problems I might have in dealing with it all. That seems to be for the professionals only.

Hi everyone.

An important topic @Greg_MenCareToo

As a male carer, working with people who have disabilities - many of whom are non-verbal, & who display challenging behaviours (so-called).

I find that it is frequently assumed that women are more caring (& better at it). Therefore many of our clients will only accept a woman working with them.

Also, us male carers are often matched with people (clients) who display physical aggression. I've been physically injured on occasions, as a result.

Women carers are not expected to work with these people, in my disability services organisation.

I don't have a lot of friends to discuss it with so that has never been a problem.

In some cases in recent times I have possibly been too open but that was when I was at a point of unraveling and needed to unload a bit. These forums have been invaluable for that.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Being a male in a caring role // Tues 25 June, 7pm AEST

It depends.

At times, I was quite happy to talk about the problem and seek out advice. Other times, I would try to figure a way out myself.

I think it also depends on whether I felt comfortable around the person I was talking to.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Being a male in a caring role // Tues 25 June, 7pm AEST

@Determined One thing that comes up when talking about men in general is that we are reluctant to accept any help until there is a crisis, our help seeking is somewhat delayed and different to women.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Being a male in a caring role // Tues 25 June, 7pm AEST

@MrDad I agree about the talking about my wife and kids and often omit the effects on me. When asked directly I often lie and say I am fine except with support professionals. People closer to me are becoming more aware however.
