Why suicidal thoughts when stressed

Why suicidal thoughts when stressed

When we're stressed or overwhelmed - Its the worst time to have to also deal with intrusive suicidal thoughts.

Why does it come?

I fight so hard to not GO THERE again, and here it is, in my face, at the worst of times.

I'm moving house again and sooo tired 😞

"Just ignore it" some announce, as if it's easy as that (note to self... never disclose to them again).

Some deeper thinkers say its just an automatic 'default' / symptom of mental illness / underlying ''depression"

All and any constructive comments are welcome 💡

Re: Why suicidal thoughts when stressed

Hey @Former-Member. Moving house is such a huge stress and so tiring 🙁 Sorry to hear you're struggling with those thoughts in your face. It's hard to get through stressful times and even harder when you have that kind of internal fight too.

For me it is the feeling of being trapped and stuck I think, that leads me to wanting out. The feeling of too much for me to handle and too few resources (both inside and outside resources) for me to get by. It is more than being overwhelmed for me. It is being totally unable to see a way through that overwhelm.

"Just ignore it" is so unhelpful. When I think of times I have experienced it, I have felt in in every part of my being. It is not something I can ignore.

I hope you're able to get a break from the fight soon and make your way through the stress you're experiencing at the moment ❤

We're sorry to hear that you are experiencing these thoughts @Former-Member, moving house is definitely a big stressor. What do you normally do to make these thoughts disappear?

Re: Why suicidal thoughts when stressed

Moving house and the uncertainty you have had surrounding that for so long now is a major stressor in your life @Former-Member Moving is hard enough but you are also losing the familiarity of where you currently live and moving many hours away ...that would stress anyine out Hon.

As for those thoughts - yes I do believe they come back when we are super stressed or overwhelmed and it does become kind of a default setting. We find it hard to cope with any thoughts when we are overwhelmed and if we have had a history of those suicidal thoughts before they become more prominent again when we are feeling so down or overwhelmed. I still have those thoughts myself when I am not feeling good @Former-Member - it takes a lot of work to fight them off and tell myself that they are only thoughts. It does feel sometimes like everything is too hard and the easiest way out of it all is to end it though - and those days are super tough. "Just ignore it" is not something you can do though when you are feeling so down - some people just do not get that ...we get into a very negative mindset and it feels like the world is falling in on us ...'a cup of tea and a biscuit' and people telling us to just ignore it does not help - it infact often makes it worse as we feel that we should be 'just like everyone else' and be able to get on with life.

MI affects us all so differently but having those suicidal thoughts can completely rule our whole life and I think what many of us in that situation have in common is a low feeling of self worth and self doubt. Neither of those are easy to break out of but it certainly is easy to go back to those negative feelings of ourselves when our mindset is negative on other fronts.

How do we get out of that mindset? That is a very hard question but I think support is the key ...it is for me anyway. Having people that listen and get it rather than those trying to solve everything with a couple of (misinformed) words certainly helps. But it is a struggle @Former-Member - one I have often been in myself - so I get it and am very much in your corner

Re: Why suicidal thoughts when stressed

Thanks @CheerBear, sounds like you understand the "internal fight"

"Feeing trapped" would definately trigger that FIGHT FLIGHT RESPONSE, to wanting out... The feeling off TOO MUCH, more than overwhelmed, totally unable to see a way out...
wow... you do understand
Guess I relate to having "no resources within" and no energy, and FEAR I'll stuff up... again...
And that feeling I''m gonna die soon' anyway, why wait...
And how good the brain is at searching & finding the means.... That's when my linked anxiety peaks 🙁 to make it worse... 'Its possible' 😲help! Not good.

The only way I 'get a break' from the fight, is distraction... (bringing other thoughts to the front of my mind), and hand to task... but that is draining. I slept today away, after taking sleepers last night, but at least I'm relaxed.

Living 'in he moment' is a good reminder... I'm trying. But have some deadlines to keep this wk, have to plan

Thanks @Zoe7, think you do 'get it' I've watched your journey over a year now and know you've lived it too, with considerable intensity. Thanks for posting.
I just don't know how I'm gonna do it. Telling myself it's just a long holiday away, cheaper rent than caravan parks. Seeing things as temporary helps a little.

You never know @Former-Member you might even like it and want to stay longer. It will be good for you to be someone secure over the winter months and not travelling around too. You of course have us here too to walk along with you. Seeing it as an adventure or an extended holiday is a really positive way to approach it and when those thoughts start taking over then reach out for support.

Re: Why suicidal thoughts when stressed

Hi again @Former-Member. Really glad you found your way to these replies without the notifications yesterday.

I related well to the "fight, flight, freeze" response you mentioned that can come from feeling overwhelmed. When I have felt trapped with overwhelm, that's exactly what happens. I can try (often frantically) to fight my way out of a situation, try and run from it or be completely frozen in it. When it reaches the point where it feels none of those responses will help me, a default 'give up' can happen. It's tough.

Also like you mentioned, my brain has been exceptionally good at looking for a way out too. The whole world feels dangerous when I have been in that mode.

To fight so hard can be really draining and however it is that you get through that is right to do, whether it is distractions, living in the moment, keeping to plans, sleeping it off (or whatever it is).

I hope today brings you some relief from it. Thinking of you ❤

I do not know you but agree with the above comment. I too made that mistake, thinking that being honest was the right thing to do. Big mistake and I am still dealing with that trauma. I now keep things to myself. I know what to avoid but cannot find help.

Re: Why suicidal thoughts when stressed

Thanks @CheerBear, you got it. I relate to the being FROZEN too.

Once I've moved I'll go to bed and sleep through all the Mothers day crap, a major tigger.. .. no kidz, my mum treated me bad all my life, always angry, died last year... manipulating to the end... yeh.... not much to miss, just a big hole. But I can't go there now... all energy required to move house...

I'm so exhausted... low iron wouldn't help - got supplements today, hate taking them but getting desperate. Heavy lifting making me feel sick (?blood pressure) so trying to pace things.

How long have you struggled with SI?; Have you attempted? (once you've been there you always fear you might again. Don't know where the line is...
