Re: Need help with ideas to get my son out of his room

Hello Diamond : ) What are his interests outside of the bedroom? I'm fortunate that my teen son loves art so therefore we have art gallery 'dates' and lunch in our favourite eatery. Also we all sit down together as a family at dinner time no matter what. I think you are a wondefully caring mum! your son is very lucky to have you.

Remove your son's bedroom door from it's hinges ? I'm sure it would be worth it just to see the look on his face when he came home from school !

Hi Diamond

Seriously though, I have a bit of the same problem with my younger son these days. I know it's just a phase he's going through. All my kids sort of needed some down-time when they got home from school, but No. 2 son is burying his pain over our family situation in online friendships at the moment, turning into a reclusive creature.

We lure him out with family trips to the movies, favourite foods (pizza, anything with chips, Nachos) shared communally at the kitchen table or on the TV room floor, the piano which is too big to fit into his room (or it would probably be in there), and inviting people over occasionally who he is obliged to come out of his cave to say hello to - or they will come looking for him and he is too embarrassed for them to see the state of his room.

Cut out the Zits comic strip from the newspaper occasionally and tape it to his bedroom door. The Jeremy character is based entirely on this sort of teenage behaviour. You will find yourself laughing at what you recognise as your son in Jeremy's shoes.

Try to mix it up a bit. It is unlikely there will be a single solution, but rather a combination of things. Enlist the help of others to break up the dynamic of it being just you and him.

Good luck.

Thank u sooo much for ur reply:)
My son has extreme ocd:( and he is not interested in anything at the moment which makes it hard to engage him in anything:(
he is also doing year 12 this year so very stressful time amongst other family and personal experiences which r obviously weighing him down!
I just can't seem to b able to even engage in the smallest conversation with him just to start somewhere! His just soooo closed off and really suffering alone which breaks my heart!
I am trying to get him some help which seems to b a challenge as well as he is refusing any help:(
but I have to keep trying I will not give up until I'm able to get thru to him (I hope:)
I don't know how or when but I know that something will change because nothing ever stays the same!
@Simona @Faith-and-Hope btw grt name:)

Thanks Diamond 💍

My No. 2 son is being the most reclusive, but he is also bearing a bigger brunt of my husband's as yet undiagnosed, and as such untreated disorder. No. 1 son has married and left home, and somehow No. 2 has become a whipping boy for something psychologically linked to my husband's childhood. It's likely some sort of replay about never being good enough or perfect enough in his own father's eyes. That is for some future psychologist to work out with him, but it is also tempered with a "good cop" response, which is probably a form of remorse. You can break your head trying to work it all out, but it helps to have a general idea because understanding that he is ill helps you to not take it too personally.

All the kids are being a bit reclusive to some degree, and I am putting it down to a grief process. None of us anticipated that this could happen to us, and we love the man who, for the moment, we have lost.

We are all quite emotionally sensitive to music. My No.2 daughter has an intellectual disability, and haunting ballads can actually make her cry. I am wondering whether your son would benefit from music as a vehicle to help him process his emotional pain without having to speak it out. If you play something a bit soulful around the house he will still be able to hear it through his bedroom door.

Art is another invaluable vehicle for processing hidden emotions. My bipolar daughter in law has taken like a fish to water with adult colouring in books. I recently bought her a book on Zentangle designs along with a visual diary and some fine line markers so she could have a go at making her own designs. Does art interest your son ? A book about drawing anime characters perhaps ? Or model painting (dragons, castles, cars) ? These things are not referred to as therapeutic for no reason ...

Re: Need help with ideas to get my son out of his room

Hi.

What's your son good at?

I find if I have a 'problem' with something my son is able to help with and enjoys he comes out.. eventually - espcially if I am having loud problems.

"What do you do if the computer does....?" questions are great for my kid - eventually he comes out just to shut me up which sounds bad but it gives him a sense of importance, control and success - and gives me a chance to say how much I love and appreciate him even if it's just a "Thank god you're here!"

I have to say I play Minecraft / do MOOCs and all sorts of things so my depressed kid knows how important he is to me ❤️

Re: Need help with ideas to get my son out of his room

Hi @soz
Thank u for ur suggestion:)
I'm at a cross roads now where the psychiatrist that my son saw once before but did not want to c again is referring my son to CAMHS although m terrified of the outcome but really hopeful about getting some answers and hopefully getting my son some appropriate help! I can also benefit from gaining some insights regarding his way of thinking and learning different ways of being able to support him!
M hoping this will happen soon enough tho!
Will keep u guys posted of the outcome:)

Hi @Diamond

I hope CAMHS works out for you and the wait isn't too long!

We have been lucky re our mental health team - we were referred through someone to the Psychiatrist who referred us to the Psychologist. I even set up group meetings once in a while. Remember you are the boss and can ask for anything you or your son needs!

Keep in touch 🙂

Re: Need help with ideas to get my son out of his room

I have had a lot of struggle with this one. Ahhh! the possibility of taking the door off its hinges. Early on I kept computers in the family room, but eventually laptops took over so I couldnt control that one.

How do you talk about his reclusion with him .. I started off with the idea that it was his mancave and we all need a sanctuary. Having a relaxed and positive way to talk about it might help him actually be able to leave it more often. (ie rather than anxious or stressed.)

I also use smell to get him noticing something off the computer .. mostly nice food smells .. as we havent gotten to a bad level of hygeine .. but any way to connect .. is important ..

Mostly we eat the main meal together .. but I monitor food scraps in his room and he knows I would stop shopping if he didnt clear it regularly.

I also sit on the bed and "threaten" to cuddle him. That one you have to be careful to keep it at the affection stage and not push the friendship.

As he is in year 12 is there anything in his study regime you can connect with to engage with him ... even if it is to watch sci-fi movie.

So many young men seem to be going through this. Its hard.

Re: Need help with ideas to get my son out of his room

Hi @Appleblossom 🙂
Thank u for ur reply ur caring reply!
I don't want to sound negative but my son is very strong minded! It is soooooo difficult to get him to do something he doesn't want to do!
he eats in his room and glad his eating at one stage he wasn't eating at all and lost sooo much weight!
He leaves his dirty laundry in his room and the other day I found empty drink bottles under his bed!
He hates when I go into his room he gets angry and starts to yell:(
His not violent but very verbal not rude but hard!
I hope I'm making sense?
I don't take anything he says personally but m trying not to stress him more, keep him safe, keep him well fed until we can an app with CAMHS! M hoping the wait is not too long!
Sometimes I feel he knows that his not well that's why he doesn't talk to me it means he needs to explain why he does the things he does!
Sometimes I feel he is soooo oblevient to wat his doing?
I would love to b able to know wat his thinking?
How his feeling?
For me that's the challenge is not being able to communicate with him at all!
Our communication is hi and bye!
I try to talk to him and he tells me to leave him alone because his praying!
I can't wait to get some answers! Just to know how to help him!
Something needs to change things can't stay like this for much longer!
It's been like this now since November last year!
Things got better and then bad again but not as worse as before in terms of eating and going to school!
Iam very hopeful that once the assessment is done the appropriate help will b provided and m hoping he will respond well!
But that's another bridge will have to cross when we get to it!
