My story! (Another Blueboarder)

My story! (Another Blueboarder)

Hi I'm Oceangirl73,

I choose my name because of my first love of the ocean, and my passion for surfing. Its basically the essence of who I am, and being a surfer makes me feel alive

I have posted but I thought I woud like to introduce myself. I suffer from a MI and have been under the same psychiatrist for 18 years. In recent times really struggled with my MI after completing my public health degree. And I am now trying to find some traction in my life and to find my purpose again and to connect with others.

As I start to feel more comfortable, I will post a more details about my expereinces with my mental illness but I believe I am on my road to recovery and what I have learnt the most is to be my own best friend.

I will keep this short and sweet and I hope I can make some friendships here, and to be able to support each other on our journey to wellness.

Hi @Former-Member,

I occasionally visited Blueboard as 'Beachwalker' but have spent most of my time here at SANE. Although you have already posted, I just wanted to send you a warm welcome. A love of the ocean is something we both share, though I'm not a surfer. That's impressive and, I imagine, likely to help with riding the waves of MI. Great that you can be your own best friend, not something I always manage but will keep trying. As @Former-Member has said, this forum is a warm place where we come to help each other in our journeys, sometimes involving support through struggles, sometimes venting, sometimes exchange of advice or opinions, sometimes just chatting. The moderators here are great and allow almost anything we choose to express. I really hope you enjoy and find value in your time here. Best to you!

Hi Oceangirl73,

I do remember you on Blueboard, when I was writing there under a different pseudonym.

I cannot speak for others in my attempt to define recovery but I can define mine.

When it comes to my recovery ,most things are still the same in my mind; the mental disorder still affects me, and I still have mods and related problems; but I can cope better now because of more knowledge, some wisdom and my ability to be able to cope and control my moods and emotions and thoughts. There are always problems and struggles but things are better now.

Most importantly I no longer panic when depression sets in because I know that it will eventially lift. My recovery is mostly the ability to accept myself as I am, not a perfect person but one with a mental disorder.

Looking at my recovery, I would say that it does not mean that the mental disorder has gone away, but that I have become able to control it to such an extent that I can live a reasonably good and fulfilling life. I think that this is what recovery means for me.

Mind you that when something bad happens in my life I can still become unwell, such as in the case of the death of a friend, or pet. But even then I recover well and I accept that things will not be smooth at all time. IN this sense my recovery is a state of mind where I still see some positives in the face of chaving a mental disorder. I remain hopefull, content, and I accept life as is. I think that in my case acceptance is a great part of my recovery.

Hi @Former-Member

I am glad you have found us - I am sure you will find some support here - and I am looking forward to reading more of your story

Honestly - I don't know how to define MI - I have PTSD - and I can get really anxious - the events in my past can haunt me at times - especially at this time of the year

Life is a journey - not the destination - and it's the different friendships we make along the way that help us to get to wherever we are going - there are people we cannot afford to have in our lives

However I have found on-line friendships to be most helpful - I think it's the privacy afforded in sites such as these that allow us to be more open and to share more with people who have been hurt by life in different ways

Welcome to us

Decadian

Thank you so much so your message and taking the time to respond and share with me your story about your recovery.

You seem to be in a good place atm and have learnt many skills and strategies to manage your MI, which is wonderful to hear. I believe, acceptance of ourselves is needed for recovery and to learn from our mistakes because we are perfectly imperfect and learning to love ourselves and others can give us so much confidence & esteem, and a sense of security that fosters a nurturing & caring environment for us to makes changes, and to grow and elvove which is important for our wellbing.

I hope you can continue to live a rich and fulifilling life and with peace of mind because we all deserve to be happy and to be surrounded by people who care and want the best for us.

Thank you so much for your warm welcome to the forum 🙂

I can relate to having struggles with anxiety and how much that impacts ones life- its not nice at all but hopefully with some support or stratgies we can feel the fear and do it anyway. I can understand how your trauma from the past can affect you in the present, and our certain times of the year can be worse for you. It is almost or is an anniversary to some type of tramua from your past- I have no words to comfort you and I wish I did because sometimes there is no words for how we feel.

I think the forum is great and I like the fact we have privacy and can open up to each other in a safe and nurturing environment, as you mentioned above. But also think we can have these types of relationships outside the forum too with people who want to build a good relationship and respect what we share with them.

Hope you are well and thank you again for welcoming me here.
