SAD seasonal changes

SAD seasonal changes

Hi everyone!

Is anyone living in Melbourne and finding the seasonal change really hard? What the?! Been totally fine and suddenly waking up feeling so heavy 😂🤷‍♀️ Thinking of increasing my medication dose but also wondering will I adjust naturally if I wait it out... xxx

Re: SAD seasonal changes

Hi @Jane123456789 and welcome to the forum 🙂

I've just posted in another thread about how my toes were aching in the cold this morning! It's definitely turned colder lately.

I find the season changes can be a bit tricky, especially as we head into the very cold, gloomy weather. I can feel a bit more blue and down and not as energetic in the cold. There's some good I find though (big boots and coats, soup, hot chocolate etc.).

You'll find some discussions about the changes in season and moods that come with them on the forum if you'd like to have a read and join in. There's this one on seasonal affective disorder and also this about struggling a bit more in winter. If you use the search bar you'll be able to find more too.

Hope your day has a little bit of warmth and maybe even some sunshine 😊!

SAD has hit me this week too with the cool change. Bit early this year. Not looking fwd to the winter. Getting as much outdoor time & exercise will help they say.

Hi @Jane123456789,

Thanks for posting and sorry to hear you're waking up feeling so heavy at the moment. The seasonal change can be tough for many people but it sounds like this is unexpected for you. Have you experienced anything like this before? Do you feel comfortable speaking about your feelings and medication queries with your mental health professional?

Re: SAD seasonal changes

The cold and dark are getting to me...I feel it in my body and mind - sluggish, flat and tired. And it's not even winter yet. Does anyone have practical tips on maintaining health through this period?

@Jane123456789 @Former-Member @CheerBear @eth @Mazarita @Zoe7 ... and anyone passing by - any ideas?

Re: SAD seasonal changes

Make the most of the daylight hours @frog Get outside when the sun is out for a little while - the Vitamin D can really help lift our mood. Plenty of activities to keep you moving as well when you are feeling lethargic - a little bit of activity/exercise can get the body moving more. Sometimes the simple things are best - routines, a walk, some sun and keeping occupied. Hard to get moving sometimes though when it is cold. dark and raining. Those days I tend to stay inside myself (when I am not at work) but need to find a little time in each day to do something a little more actve ...even housework can be that little catalyst for me to get moving.

Re: SAD seasonal changes

Thanks @Zoe7 good ideas. Once I get some momentum I'm ok. It's getting started that's the struggle. Lately I've been putting my alarm across the room so I literally have to leap out of bed and get it so my son doesn't get woken up. Whatever works, eh?

Re: SAD seasonal changes

haha @frog I do exactly the same - have my alarm where I need to get up to turn it off then once I am up I can at least get moving - hard some mornings to do that though.

Re: SAD seasonal changes

Haha @frog & @Zoe7, I do that with the alarm clock too ⏰ or else I just fall back to sleep. Good reminders there Zoe👍 I need to kick my but into gear

Re: SAD seasonal changes

haha @Former-Member we are all the same with the alarms lol

Hope your new additions to your house are making it feel more like a home. I am off to bed shortly so will need to catch up with you tomorrow. Goodnight @Former-Member and @frog

Re: SAD seasonal changes

Hi @frog @Former-Member @Zoe7 @Jane123456789 @Ali11 @CheerBear not sure I can add anything to what @Zoe7 has suggested. All good ideas. I guess for me once daylight savings starts I go to bed earlier and rise earlier to be more in sync with the light/dark diurnal cycles. I didn't have it for 17 years up north and it effects me more than the actual change of seasons.
