How long did it take to get your diagnosis?
I wrote my first post recently about going to a private hospital soon to try and sort out my mental health.
i was a very anxious girl growing up always worrying my mum would die. Every time I went to dads house I would have a horrible feeling in my stomach always worried. I always complained of stomach aches and went to doctors and specialists who then determined it was from nerves and worries. I recall seeing a psychologist when I was younger. This would all have been around the age of 6-9yo.
My mums side had a history of mental illness. My grandmother and her siblings all have been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
I’m in my mid 30’s now and I’ve had diagnosed depression and anxiety for approx 8 years and on medication. Worthless, hopeless, down, sad, lonely. In a hole. Then things seemed to look up with medication and time but it got terrible after the birth of my first child 3 years ago. I was in a very, very dark place. This is when I first saw my perinatal psychiatrist as I was having terrible instrusive thoughts and just hated myself. I was put on a low doseage of antipsychotics.
Ive since had my second child 18 months ago and The experience was extremely different.
My moods are SO extreme. I’m outgoing, hyper, fun and dancing around singing one minute and then angry, aggressive and hopeless the next.
I feel like it’s not just depression and anxiety. My moods are everywhere. I feel ‘crazy’ because I’m not just sad. I’m everywhere!! I’ve mentioned possibility of bipolar but psychiatrist seems to think it’s just depression. Im
not saying she’s not good at her job but I only see her once a month or fortnivhtly when I’m really bad and some times I’m in a good mood so I sort of just brush things off. Then the next day I’ll be crying looking up accommodation to leave my husband and kids and move on.
My question is- did you get a diagnosis easily enough or did you have to keep asking? Obviously I’m going to the hospital soon and can let them know my concerns but I feel like because I present well perhaps I’m not taken seriously enough?
