Today's session with psych

Today's session with psych

I had a session with my psychiatrist this afternoon and it was crap. We started talking and suddenly I got onto the subject of my parents (who are not talking to me for the past 6 yrs since telling them of my childhood abuse).

I started telling him how angry I am; how hurtful I feel because they have abandoned me and don't care. I then started to cry and told him that I would self harm just 'to get back at them' and show them. He said that it would't make any difference because they still wouldn't come. I cried even more hearing him say that; how can they not come to see me. How can my dad not try to make contact with me. I then said that I wish they weren't alive because I then could go and visit my dad at the cemetary and talk to him there.

I then stopped and bawled my eyes out; telling him OMG i just realised what i said. I told him i am angry at their behaviour towards me and it hurts so much.

He says I need to move on to which I told him - easier said than done. They are still my parents. and i think my inner child in me is still 'expecting them to come back to me' expecting them to love and support me - but they won't.

I left telling him i never want to talk about them again as it upsets me too much. But i think in a way it was good to talk about them because i haven't for a while and i got to release some of my built up emotions. I know Mothers Day is coming soon and i always get very emotional and upset. Even though I am a mum and have 3 adult children I still would love to have a great relationship with my mum and my dad - but that will never ever happen.

Now left feeling drained and exhausted 😞

Re: Today's session with psych

I so agree that psychotherapy is for US. It is important to take froma session what you can, and as time passes you may look back on that session and gain insights that you did not have at the time.

What I gain from your intial post @BlueBay is that you were authentic about both your pain and sense of betrayal and anger in your session. Incredibly draining as it is in the moment, the courage it takes to experience both, and the courage to post and articulate it, will ultimately be empowering for you.

I have a sense of serious betrayal by my mother. Last night I was out to dinner with a group and one of them knew my mother, (had studied music with her). I ended up being true to myself, called her a tall skinny blonde, who always had to be top dog. I didnt magnify her in my mind or in my responses, the way she always wanted us to. I didnt tear up or get angry, though I have done all those things in the past. I didnt let it wreck my evening. There were many other great conversations last night and I was on my turf, and my daughter's turf ... but that is another story entirely.

warm regards

Hi @MoonGal

Thank you for your support. I am trying to not think about my parents but sometimes its hard. i can go through for a while without any worry but then something will happen or a thought will pop up or eg.mothers day now brings up emotions. The way you described my pain is so right - an arrow through my heart.

I feel for you too with your abuse. I understand the pain. I just hope that one day I can let go of this huge pain i have and live a much better, quieter, happy life. I still feel so stuck that i sometimes just don't know how to let go. How do you let go of the pain tht someone who i thought would be caring and supportive abandon me? I don't know; still need to work on this.

Hi Apple

I so agree - we were betrayed - it is terrible to be betrayed

What worse thing can someone do to us

You were in the right place to speak your mind and congrats that you did not let it wreck your evening.

It is agonising to hear people who will never understand (so why tell them) how tough things were between you and your mother,

Well done

To @Appleblossom @Decadian @Former-Member @Former-Member @MoonGal

Thank you so much to each and everyone of you for your support and replies. I am so glad that i have found this forum.

Until I read some of your posts, I always thought I was the only one who had problems with their parents - but now I realise that no I am not the only one; there are so many people suffering, hurting from their parents comments, behaviour or abandonment.

I still don't know how to let go the pain I feel. I guess i need to work on this.

Take care

Re: Today's session with psych

You are certainly not the only one Sadgirl

I wonder about parents who could treat their children this way - and not all of them - some might be picked out as okay - others - not okay

It's interesting but I am glad to know I am not the only one too

@BlueBay - "I still don't know how to let go..."

I imagine that life is a river and whatever I am hanging on to (and weighing me down) as a big rock. I practice letting go of that huge lump of burdensome rock, and popping to the surface (of the river/life) and starting to go with the flow, safely swimming my own path.
