Anyone else ever experience the mental health system letting them and their loved ones down????

Anyone else ever experience the mental health system letting them and their loved ones down????

After having to fight to keep my very unwell partner IN hospital and after speaking to a friend who knows of someone else who had a family member discharged too soon and it ended in tragedy I am wondering how many other cares out there have similar experiences that they may be willing to share! And my question is.....what can I do to change this so that it never happens again???? I feel that whilst my partner my partner is unwell I must be his VOICE!!!! I no longer want to sit back and say wow that was a close call , could have been worse...... I want to do something so people don't have to have those 'close calls!!!' One WIN in my court is that since emailing letters to bosses of bosses of our mental health team in our country town I have now been asked to come in and have a face to face to discuss possible changes their team can make to help in the admission and recovery of a client!!! I have my list ready!!!!!!!

Hi @Attahua

It sounds so frustrating, and sadly you're not alone here. Many people, both carers and people with lived experience feel let down by the mental health systems.

This thread started by @Shaz51 shares some similar concerns. You might also find some useful resources and viewpoints here.

May I ask @Attahua what you got on your list so far?

Despite having a really challenging time, I'm pleased to hear that something has come of it.

So far I am requesting an explanation as to why the nurses told me the police had been called when my partner absconded and the police have no record of this job? I would like nursing staff to familiarise themselves with the correct names and locations of City pysch wards so that there is no confusion and that when they tell families where their loved one is bring flown too , that this information is correct . I am requesting a family liaison worker when a social worker is not available so that there is only one line of communication instead of snippets of information from varying staff members. I am requesting that staff read their clients files....or at least the treating doctor do that he does not NEED to ask me if my partner is on a CTO. I am requesting that doctors listen to family especially regarding what works and what doesn't in regards to medication. I am suggesting that if my partner was monitored more regularly by his caseworker when he was well then this admission could have been avoided. I am requesting that when a family member contacts a caseworker and they say they will call you back then I expect them to call back. I am suggesting that if a client requests a second opinion then that is their right according to the statement of rights for inpatient treatment orders. These are a few of the issues I will be raising in my meeting tomorrow.

I have many issues in regards to the rights directly from the Statement of Rights' that were not observed. I also will need to contact someone higher up in the city ward my partner was transferred too as once again I was not contacted by any staff member in regards to medication or when he would be examined or treated so never had the opportunity to be present. However my major concern with the city ward is the fact that unbeknownst to me they were about to put him on a bus home , discharge him......extremely unwell!!!!!!! Not only was I not part of this discharge plan and it was only by chance that I found out but the fact that the treating team who reviewed him deemed him well enough to go home.....only two days after bring transferred from a secure ward.....still astounds me. Fortunately I was able to put a stop to this near tragedy but not before this team of so called professionals informed him that they were sending him home but his partner stopped it from happening!!!!!!!!!! How incredibly unprofessional!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi and yes I had the meeting. It went okay as far as getting a verbal apology and my letter will be shared with the staff in the pysch unit. Also the manager that I met with said it shouldn't have to be this hard, and yet she can see how it has been, and has given me her mobile number so that any issues I have in future with my partner's care I just have to call her and she will ring her contacts in the hospital he is in now......which once again came in handy today as no sooner had I had the meeting and my partner rings to say he just had a meeting with the doctor and they want to transfer him back to our local hospital...the very same hospital that could not manage him. I am yet yo speak to this doctor to find out how accurate that information is but at this point nothing surprises me anymore!!!! Also the manager is following this up as well. At the very least I think what I did achieve from this meeting is that when my partner returns home the CMH team will be doing exactly as their job entails and there will be more regular follow ups etc, rather then them being quite blasé because my partner holds down a job etc so in their opinion he doesn't need as much support but in actual fact that is when he needs to touch base the most, just to keep him on track.

Hello @Attahua,

you did have a busy day , you were lucky that they gave you her mobile number , because they would not give us a number to call when we need to , just the office number .

One morning My husband who has MI just frozed doing a job , I managed to get him home and rang up the office to talk to the doctor -- 7 hours later the mental heath person finally rang up

I totally agree with you @Attahua because we are self employed ( cant work too much , hubby cant cope ) --- in their opinion he doesn't need as much support but in actual fact that is when he needs to touch base the most, just to keep him on track.

so they put him on meds and then they want to take him off them , one pych told him it is a waste of time trying to help him , soo many new doctors , they can`t work out what my husband really has , been diagnosed with one thing and given meds for something different

I hear you!!! Totally frustrating, infuriating and exhausting!!!!! It irks me so much that these doctors tell their clients things like' we want to send you home but your partner doesn't think you are well enough!' or the latest,' you have a choice to either transfer back to your local hospital or another country ward' that may as well be on the other side of the world it's that far away from home!!!!Fortunately someone was kind enough to inform me that my partner has the right to decline both offers!!!! He was getting distressed at the thought of another transfer! Our local ward cannot manage him and if the doctor bothers to contact them she will be told exactly that!!!! Yes I am fortunate that I was given a mobile number but really I think it was just a token gesture to keep me from complaining , not that I am ungrateful and I have used it today !!! Lol Hang in there!!!! That's all we can do but it shouldn't have to be this hard!!!

Hi @Attahua

I totally agree

will be thinking of you , keep in touch , take care

Hang in there!!!! That's all we can do

and also like @CherryBomb, says ; don`t forget to look after yourself as well, If we don`t look after ourselves we can not look after others

I am still learning that,
