Trying To Describe A Mixed Episode

Trying To Describe A Mixed Episode

Mixed episodes, sometimes called agitated depression or dysphoric (hypo)mania, is the very worst mental state that I have ever experienced. I would like to share with the community what it feels like to be in a mixed ep. I wrote this as I was in my last mixed episode...

Mostly the agitation and irritability are way off usual... really struggling not to blow up over tiny things that don't matter. Repetitive bird calls and stuff are normally no problem for me, but they're driving me nuts at the moment, making me squirm...

I don't normally do the whole leg pumping thing - you know when you're sitting and rocking your leg up and down without your toes leaving the ground? Been doing that lots...

And sleep's a bitch... got maybe 3 hours last night, and feel wired af... I'm feeling very low and tired. Exhausted actually. But, confusing as all hell, I've got all this energy bouncing around inside me, waiting to explode. I feel like I could run a marathon, and at the same time want to sleep until the universe goes cold...

It's a paradox wrapped in an enigma, covered in lead sinkers, shoved into a rubber hose, and used to bash the crap out of my head. It's 4 guys with phone books and heavy rods, beating the crap out of me...

I am using everything I've got to try to concentrate, to focus. It's more difficult than at any other time in my life, but when I'm in a mixer, I find I need to try and stay focused, otherwise I lose my shit...

I'm not normally a control freak. Usually if I'm depressed or hypomanic or a bit anxious, I just ride it through, use acceptance, get all Zen and manage pretty well. I am able to allow the symptoms to exist within me, but to sort of sidestep them in a way that keeps me sane...

But not with mixers. I can't ignore or accept or ride through them without tons of effort to control things. I know that mixed episodes are one of the most dangerous mental states to be in, so I am very careful to stay as much in control as possible...

Oh, and hypersexual? Yeah, off the charts...

There are all these racing thoughts, but at the same time there is that whole cotton wool dissociation going on too. I can't really describe it. I'm both too close to my thoughts, and infinitely far away from them, if that makes any kind of sense to you...

I keep having to ask people to repeat what they said to me, as I often can't hear them for all the internal chatter of my thoughts going on. I've got guilt trips and old wounds trying to tear at me, and lots of negative self talk, but that's something I'm used to dealing with, so I've got that biatch under control...

It's a mental state filled with contradictions, and those contradictions are playing tug-of-war with my brain, pulling it this way and that in a mad frenzy that feels like nothing I feel in any other state...

I've got lots of floaters in my eyes. It's an unfortunate genetic condition one of my parents gifted me with. I have protein strands inside the gluggy part of my eye that clump together, and they throw shadows onto my retina. If you've ever seen water under a microscope, with all of those shadowy partly see-through stringy and clumpy things, that's the way my vision looks all the time, especially in bright light. My brain is pretty good at applying a filter and ignoring them most of the time, but when I'm in a mixer, that filter goes on the fritz, and I see all of the floaters moving around and jerking and settling across all of my vision constantly, and it's frustrating as all crap. Makes me want to gouge my eyes out...

Yeah... mixers... they suck ass...

Re: Trying To Describe A Mixed Episode

Thanks @april @Kurra,
I read of it somewhere ages ago..
Today whilst out I noticed my pupils were so small and my eye's so clear, bright blue...ignited with the buzzing I felt.
I'd prior to held lead in a group with fearless confidence, it's not always so...but it's been happening for a good week now.
Other times yes as you describe the downcast yes, almost my whole personal changes and I loose all confidence, or black dark pupils..also quite alive, dangerous but I'm different again..on the edge.
Anyhoo, yes I appreciated your response I resonate with both. Thank you.☺🎇

I'm sure I've read it somewhere @Former-Member but oldtimers disease has struck me. Do you have a diagnosis? Can you remind me please? 😞😶

Re: Trying To Describe A Mixed Episode

I just typed to loose it! Errrrr @ kurra.
So in brief..no proper diagnosis yet but present incredibly high anxiety & dissociation..this my psyche wants to explore. I had homework, been forgetting to do.
She wants to explore my life growing up.
She is still constructing full picture I think.

@Former-Member, yes I think I need to be more honest about rid bits that I normally put aside, in order to be normal, sane not crazy.
I want to understand, but I have to let go.
It's hard to let go our built up defence.
I think it becomes natural, to operate according to situation.
I think having children, life changes has brought the ability to micro manage apart and I'm not beginning to care.
Some days I don't care to be a part of society.
Other days I miss the larger, confident person I am, can be, was...unsure!
Of late I pull it off well. Because I start to not care if people think I'm slightly different.

I'm unsure what to describe, many things, maybe it's always been, always will be this way!

Re: Trying To Describe A Mixed Episode

It should help you a bit when you know what you're dealing with. It helped me enormously when I was diagnosed bipolar 1. So many things suddenly made a lot of sense and as I learnt more about it I was able to understand me better and to understand the symptoms I was experiencing. Then I started to see the sort of things I needed to try to change.

By the way : I'm very good at covering up all this stuff. I should have won an Oscar by now as my acting ability is supreme. 💕🎶💕

I agree with diagnosis helping @Kurra.
Lol your Oscar performance's gave me a good morning grin!
A life's time work of mastery for sure 😉🎇:ok_hand:
Enjoy your Monday!
I tried sleeping in, but my eldest was not having it.

Mine blur for sure, but usually as I'm coming down from a hypo manic state. They might be like that when I'm high, but j don't notice so much. I think it's because physically my body is exhausted and it takes energy to focus and my brain decides thats not something to expend energy on.

Re: Trying To Describe A Mixed Episode

Yes. Mine do. I have light greeny bluey eyes. My mother would always say when I was unwell my eyes would turn a very pale green. My daughter mostly notices when my eyes change. It's subtle. Not blue to brown. Bluey green changes. My eyes are a brighter more vibrant colour when I am well & washed out when I'm not doing so well.

Re: Trying To Describe A Mixed Episode

I have recently noticed a weird wiggling in the centre of my vision. It makes it very difficult to read ect. ATM I am in a strange mood. Psychomotor agitation, mind running but not feeling happy... just so out of sorts.

Re: Trying To Describe A Mixed Episode

Hello @Findingmyway, yes I felt this way this afternoon, I'm trying to pull round. But I've been really agitated, then so flat all day. Nothing I did was working & I find most things grating. It's the worst, loneliest experience when this happens. I know my thoughts were negative but I hope it passes. A partners friend came, & I had to dig deep to be part of polite conversation, I made it. Think it helped break my thought a little.

Re: Trying To Describe A Mixed Episode

Can you describe how your psychomotor agitation affects you @Findingmyway? Have you found anything that relieves the agitationy? Do you have any diagnosis?

I apologise for all the questions but it will help me better understand what you're experiencing. 🎶
