Hi, new here with dysthymia

Hi, new here with dysthymia

Hi, I'm BeeGee and I thought I'd introduce myself and say hello.

I'm a 49 year old guy, and I've returned to study for a life change after a career in IT. I "discovered" in 2014 that I suffer from dysthymia. I say "discovered", because looking back I think I've actually been depressed since around age 14-15 - I remember feeling like I wanted not to be alive any more at that age, just felt so down and worthless all the time. Over the years I've learnt to live with my feelings, but most of the time life consists of going through the motions. Happiness and joy are things other people have; I just get to persevere. I struggle to find pleasure in anything very much, and most of the time have to pretend to be enjoying things so as to not be a wet blanket to my family and others. I've become very good at wearing masks to fit in with those around me, since showing the real me would be just a complete downer and turn-off, so most people would have no idea I suffer from depression.

I've tried many different meds and supplements over the last couple of years or so without success. AD #1 made me too dissociated to be able to study; #2 had no effect at all, even after doubling the dose, and #3 worked well in the sense of stabilising my mood - but it was like being in a straitjacket. I couldn't feel anything at all, good bad or indifferent. It was like being a robot. #4 was like taking jellybeans, and #5 just made me irritable. I'm currently unmedicated (although trialling amino acids acetyl l-carnitine and n-acetyl l-tyrosine), and am starting to see a psychiatrist to investigate options my GP can't access.

I had a few sessions with a psychologist who helped me achieve some good insights into my past and my current condition, but found him to be quite short on things that help - plus he talked so much I could never get to say all the things I wanted to cover in a session! I've done the "Wellbeing" online course at Mindspot and found it somewhat helpful for addressing automatic negative thoughts. I am working through the book "The Happiness Trap" by Russ Harris and finding that it has some really helpful ideas. But at the end of the day I don't feel like I have moved significantly from when I was diagnosed... textbook treatment-resistant depression.

I've been active on the BlueBoard forum for a while but alas, it is closing down so I'm looking for a new home of similarly broken people. I think it's worth having a place to chat with fellow sufferers so as not to overburden family and friends.

So - g'day! I look forward to chatting with you.

I do like your comment @BeeGee. It gave me a good belly laugh. Troublemakers definitely but nice troublemakers!

And here I was thinking that the "edit" function would deprive us of OTE's entertaining typos! Silly me. The best ones always slip through.
Welcome to this forum. @BeeGee @Sahara@Former-Member @Kurra Hope we last ...
Thank you for the warm welcome Appleblossom - it really is appreciated. Your post was interesting, informative and warm - I received a lot from it and if this is any indication of the substance of this site I am sure we will last 🙂
The situation re closure of BB sounds very poorly managed, though probably the staff are also upset. I am outraged given the situation re rising ABS suicide stats. I do know that Sane CEO is trying to build support for more funding ... "They" are crazy if the "powers that be" dont grant it.
I am outraged also AB (hope you don't mind the abbreviation). There has been massive cuts to public health/mental health by this present govt (billions) and most MH support services are being hit - for no justifiable reason other than it does not lye in the corporate or political interest/advancement. With the current national S epidemic it is not only crazy but criminal. I am corresponding with politicians on a State, local and federal level presently asking why such funding was cut when obviously there is a need for additional funding and lobbying for it to be re-instated. The more who do this, the more success for additional funding. Otherwise further cuts will continue and more life saving forums such as BB and possibly SANE will be closed.
Re mods ... I was a little upset when I first joined to notice that some heart-breaking first posts were not responded to. I did not realise there was constant moderation I was newish to internet. I tried to respond to the posts but as they were old .. dont know of any consequence.. but still think of those people. I thought it not wise to leave people hanging with their souls on display ... it would just add to rejection. That does not seem to happen any more.
So important that this does no longer occur. You are a woman of heart and soul - I respect this so. We are now here to assist you and hopefully no one will be left hanging again.
Personally I have found mods helpful, yet I also felt some need to discuss concerns directly on forum with them .. I found they responded and my point remained out there. Which is GOOD.
This is not good - this is great!!! 🙂
Sometimes I am upset when a mod posts a "caring" comment which obviously shows that the mod has not read the persons other posts so the nice words are completely inappropriate ... IMO and possibly taken as a veiled dig. I dont always call it out as I dont want to trigger the person looking for help ... but this is a good thread to raise that topic.

Mods ... when posting .. if unsure about a persons situation ... please consider clicking on their profile and read a little so that you dont seem like a doofus by asking dumb questions that show you havent done your research. More importantly ... dont inflame a delicate situation with a vulnerable person by putting your foot in it.
Agree - responding with a caring comment when we haven't read the post is condescending to that member. And they will see and feel this. I can understand it must be difficult to read and respond to every post - a mammoth task but vital to provide effective support creating a successful forum that saves lives. Everyone needs to feel heard, valued and supported. Is there a need for more moderators?
Re .. Forum Participants .. I am so glad you valued people with lived experience on BB ... we are not 2nd class citizens.
Ditto 🙂
Calling people out ... is tricky ... I can see it has value ... you were clear that it was done in a respectful and informed manner ... by those who had read a persons history and were sensitive to discrepancies.
Absolutely. Respect formost and upmost. It does take getting to know a person and their situation very well - it can take time and for the person/s to open up honestly to share how they are feeling and what they are truly experiencing. A Mutual trust relationship needs to develop first in that instance. But it's much less complex when a person comes onto the forum and directly asks for advise.
There is a role I learned about in psychodrama .. called the Naive Enquirer ... it is ok to ask questions but skill in counselling .. will be .. the ability to ask relevant questions.
I have personally experienced the latter - asking the relevant questions to develop insight into what is the real situation/issues the member is struggling with in order to relate and help them through it.
Hope to get to know you over time.
I very much look forward to getting to know you Appleblossom (love your user name, calming - mine is a bit more dramatic lol) Warm hugs

P.S. I have attempted to quote parts of Appleblossoms original message using the BB method. I don't think this was successful here. Any tips on the proper procedure to quote relevant parts of a person's post that I wish to respond to from any you computer wizards out there would be greatly appreciated 🙂

@BeeGee A typo it may have been but so spot on. If you're not sure look up the meaning of ethnic. Quite brilliant actually.

Sigh... here we go again. Apparently my little joke over your typo was deemed "discriminatory" and struck off. .

Strike one...

BeeGee I just visited Fancy_pants profile site - the moderator who greeted you and asked for feedback regarding the success of BB. She has been off-line since 7:30. I think we need to openly discuss this moderation error with her on here and work this problem out. Don't let this dishearten you - keep posting. I loved your joke by the way - haven't laughed that hard for awhile. 🙂 And look up above - stuffed up again but didn't leave the evidence lol. Hugs xx

Re: Hi, new here with dysthymia

Not sure I can be fagged, tbh. If that's the culture of the place then it is what it is... easier to just find somewhere else if it proves to be too Big Brotherish/PC. My experience with Beyond Blue was not dissimilar; after trying to discuss issues with the moderation team I got just so tired of trying to push custard uphill with a toothpick and packed my bags. BB was a breath of fresh air after that.

I'll give it a fair run here though, this might be an isolated incident. Although I feel the waves of "oh no, not again" rising up I will ignore them for now and see how things pan out. There are other fish in the sea after all.
