Decluttering and home maintenance

Decluttering and home maintenance

When MI crisis happens, keeping house can take low priority. But having a messy house can further dent what is often an already low self esteem. Build up of grime follows and rodents have a field day in inaccessible places.

Getting that 2 minute job done (that has been annoying you for years) can lift ones spirit.

I have slowly been decluttering and tidying up our house. The progress made thus far has been achieved primarily by persistently dealing with one item a day.

What has often kept me going has been the encouragement from others @Faith-and-Hope, @Smc @Determined @Shaz51

This tip passed on to me today. Hang all your clothes in the wardrobe with the hanger back to front. As you wear them, return them with the hanger the right way round. In 6-12 months review all items that remain on back to front hangers with a view to donating/selling them.

@Smc

I know that it was when things were happening that our house became increasingly untidy and I believe it was a sure sign of stress. I do not know how I would manage if Mr D were to relapse. I have not gotten into an adequate cleaning routine as yet.

I am thinking I might need to speak to my counselor about this.

Being gentle with ourselves through the process ...

@Former-Member, @Shaz51, I've been known to regift unwanted prizes. At least that way, someone gets pleasure from them. 🙂

Yeah... every time there's another crisis, it wipes us out for a day or two, and any progress we've made collapses. We keep trying. Must be stubborn or something.

One hopeful (?) thing out of yesterday's quick pre-lunch tidy up... everything got dumped into boxes and put on our bed for the day. Pretty much covered the bed. So we know if we can reduce the clutter in this room by that amount, it gives us adequate room to move. Room to move means room to work, and room to think. So while it's all in boxes, maybe hopefully I can sift through and reduce the quantity of stuff, and get the "worth keeping" either into a permanent spot, or at least sorted into a box of like items. There is some actual rubbish among it too. Things that drifted into out of the way spots instead of ending up in a bin, and things which have outlived their usefulness. Just getting that stuff out of the way would give some breathing space!

First job off the rank though will be washing the nice plates tha came out for yesterday's lunch. Big stack of them on the table at the moment.

Naw, don't mind it too much @Former-Member. 🙂 I've got a big collection of "nice crockery". I was buying it up for a while for a planned project that never happened, so I've ended up with too much of it. I've largely sorted it down into the stuff I'd personally like to keep and use, and stuff that is nice enough, but would be better re-homed to someone else.

But I rather enjoy being able to pick a different selection of "nice plates" for a special occasion meal. Yesterday I went for a mix of three different gold trimmed designs, two designs alternating between seats for eating off, and another design for cheese and crackers plates. Washing them afterwards is part of the process of enjoying them.

I still feel a bit sad at the fact that there were "nice things" in Mum's crockery buffet that were wedding presents or similar, and never got used, in some cases literally never, because they were "too special". Special things are more special when they're enjoyed. If they happen to get damaged or break in the process, at least they've brought some joy in the meantime.

Washing plasticware though... that is an entirely different matter! 😛

With you on using the "good" stuff @Smc .

Mr Darcy has "not been feeling well" and was crying Christmas eve. He likes to get up before me and do his own thing and get brekky ready. When I got up this morning, all decorations had been taken down and cards were in recycle bin.

I did need to rearrange the storage tub, fitted in a few more items that had become separated and found a home for the box at the bottom of the linen cupboard.

Was able to hoist off some unopened Woolies Lion King figurines to some visitors who joined us for lunch yesterday.

I need to get all my timber window frames re-painted (about 10 of them) - theres's bare timber exposed to the weather (on outside).

Dad re-painted several of my window frames (back in 2004), when he flew over to stay with me - he's gone now.

The paint has flaked off in huge patches on my Bedroom ceiling - somehow I need to get that painted.

Oh No, Mr Bean @Smc

One of my disabled clients (who is non-verbal) loves Mr Bean's Holiday movie.

Plus she keeps wanting us (support workers) to Role Play Mr Bean's "Turkey on his Head" scene.

If I follow any of Mr Bean's actions (example) - My house would probably fall down (disintegrate)....

A few less things to declutter in the kitchen after a meltdown (aka tantruim) tonight -darling not me-

Have not been in to check out the damage but suspect a new dinner set may be in order. Judging by the clean up sounds I usupect there was quite a lot destroyed. Will have to check it out after she goes to bed so as not to trigger another round.

Kitchen drawer was on the list to clean out and update so just speeds up the progress I guess.
