Decluttering and home maintenance

Decluttering and home maintenance

When MI crisis happens, keeping house can take low priority. But having a messy house can further dent what is often an already low self esteem. Build up of grime follows and rodents have a field day in inaccessible places.

Getting that 2 minute job done (that has been annoying you for years) can lift ones spirit.

I have slowly been decluttering and tidying up our house. The progress made thus far has been achieved primarily by persistently dealing with one item a day.

What has often kept me going has been the encouragement from others @Faith-and-Hope, @Smc @Determined @Shaz51

This tip passed on to me today. Hang all your clothes in the wardrobe with the hanger back to front. As you wear them, return them with the hanger the right way round. In 6-12 months review all items that remain on back to front hangers with a view to donating/selling them.

Having a "man look" eh @Shaz51

Sorting a box of papers and came across a 'what do you like and not like' list Mr Darcy had writtten goodness knows how many years ago but one item was "When you make too much of a mess or don't put things away so then I put things away in the wrong spot".

Yep, I was and in many ways still am the messy one - thankfully things are heaps better after I discovered conrainerising.

Three kids under 2yo taught me to containerise pretty quickly @Former-Member ..... didn’t stop mil encouraging them to tip out every container in the house when she baby-sat them .... :face_with_rolling_eyes: ..... so I severely limited the babysitting, and designed a lockable storage cupboard for the toys when we built our own house .... 👍

Re: Decluttering and home maintenance

My guesses re. proportions were about right. One bag of "total rubbish", a box of recycling, a bagful of soft plastics, a couple of plastic bucketfuls of worm farm "food", and one bagful of "keepers". Some of that bagful will be things I'll keep, some will be things our daughter wants, some will get passed on to others. Oh, and once I take out the dirty socks and snack food tubs, it might be closer to half a bagful. 😛

Some missing socks located perhaps @Smc , memories of the 'odd sock bag' Mum had when we were younger.

Have you (or anyone else) used the cube type storage shelves @Faith-and-Hope? Thinking it might be a practical option, will get ones with doors as dusting is not one of my strong points.

@Ali11 @Shaz51 Feeling just a tad smug when I have a 'well, who would have thought' moment = 😀. Although, with my dubious sense of humour, I must admit the thought of "Mrs Always Right" did cross my mind 😀

Re: Decluttering and home maintenance

If you mean a shelving system where cubes are stacked together to create a shelving unit @Former-Member, no I haven’t, but I have used stacking plastic drawers before, and plastic crates, and baskets, and bags, and hooks, and racks ...... just about anything that sorts a mess area into a workable system. My focus is on functionality, but I do like a “country” look to things, where j-ugs can be vases and cups can be pen holders, and there are hooks on backs of doors, and a bowl for little junk items somewhere on the kitchen bench where you can always locate a bobby pin or safety pin, and there is a threaded needle stuck in the current page of the calendar 😏

Its not only functional, but these things, and bookshelves and cushions are what feels like home to me. I also keep chopped favourite teacups for a while on the kitchen windowsill to keep found shells or a small bunch of picked flowers .....
