Decluttering and home maintenance

Decluttering and home maintenance

When MI crisis happens, keeping house can take low priority. But having a messy house can further dent what is often an already low self esteem. Build up of grime follows and rodents have a field day in inaccessible places.

Getting that 2 minute job done (that has been annoying you for years) can lift ones spirit.

I have slowly been decluttering and tidying up our house. The progress made thus far has been achieved primarily by persistently dealing with one item a day.

What has often kept me going has been the encouragement from others @Faith-and-Hope, @Smc @Determined @Shaz51

This tip passed on to me today. Hang all your clothes in the wardrobe with the hanger back to front. As you wear them, return them with the hanger the right way round. In 6-12 months review all items that remain on back to front hangers with a view to donating/selling them.

Wow, you've been busy @Determined!

I'm continuing with stacked brick garden edges. I've got most of the "modern" bricks stacked neatly, now I'm moving on to Victorian and Edwardian era bricks. I'm keeping them together with their "own kinds" because when it comes to actually building with them, they'll have different best uses. The modern bricks being high fired are very stable. The Edwardian bricks are also nice and stable, but have a softer look than the moderns, so I might want to use them somewhere they can be appreciated. The Victorian bricks are of variable quality. The early brick kilns weren't as reliable, so some are hard-fired, some are a little underfired. They look lovely, but you don't have to go far around town to find 1800s brick walls where some of the bricks have slowly disintegrated. So they'll probably be best as non-structural features. Although any that are still sound now are probably OK as such?

As I'm collecting up the bricks from around the yard, I'm taking note of what else needs to be dealt with. There's some stuff that's really not worth keeping, and needs to either be rehomed or tossed, and the tidying I've done so far is starting to make it easier to see what's what. Big job though.

Am ending up with this sort of general look. But not mortared, and in straight lines. Annndd because I'm infilling the paths with woodchips, the bricks are kind of disappearing except for the top layer or so. 😛

One of two bookshelves assembled and installed today. (I was aiming for two). That was harder than it needed to be. I think I used up all of my motivation and creative genius yesterday 🥱😵

Can relate @Determined. Am finding the brick rearranging etc. more of a chore today.

@Determined

One bookshelf done = yay, you have achieved something today, 'onya Bro.

@Smc getting that bit more done today = another bite off the elephant, also an achievement, 'atta girl.

@Former-Member, yeah. 🙂

I've moved three plant stands onto a plinth/wall I've built up with some of the bricks, so that it serves both as garden edging and a "fence" to keep the wallabies out of that part of the garden.

I had been making a wallaby proof enclosure out of plant racks and old metal bedheads (modern-old, not antique-old) under our gum tree, but if we're going to get those lower branches trimmed off, they will be in the way... But I think the new wallaby exclusion zone may well work better anyway, and will be more "extendable" over time, via moving and/or adding to the barriers.

Yes must get in and do something. Although I did throw out 2 years of old tax records and studiously hand shredded them while watching the footy. Does that count? It's amazing when you go through some of the old receipts and purchases that were made to see how time flies and remember some of the good memories associated with them.

Make the most of every day and enjoy what we can within our circumstances! 😊

Clearing paperwork most definitely counts @JB70, well done.
