Re: Word for the Day - Comfort or Play

Lol, @Former-Member. So sweet you are sending us personalised footwear! Those ones for me look very space age in some way. They might be something I would wear if I was living in my favourite TV place: the Starship Enterprise. Or maybe if I was Barbarella.

In reality, the best shoes in my book are comfortable shoes. My feet have become increasingly picky about what this means as I've got older. Above all they need to be flat and have cushioning, otherwise I find it almost impossible to walk at all (old lady syndrome before my time). I've bought Skechers sandals and shoes for some years now, for wearing when I am out and walking about in the world. It's my main wardrobe expense. I usually get one pair every year. One year it's sandals, the next it's shoes. They make footwear with 'technologies' like 'memory foam' and 'goga max' footbeds. In other words, they are like walking on clouds.

I'm with @utopia also, in that I wear thongs inside the flat pretty much all year round (Havianas brand, well made thongs with a fair bit of 'soft'). As I still live my life a lot inside the flat, that means thongs are my most worn footwear.

Aside from that, I go barefoot on the beach with my feet in the water at the shoreline. Sadly, I'm only allowed to do that once a week now, due to the abovementioned foot and leg problems. Aside from pain and physiotherapists advice, walking like that is my favourite thing.

Wow, I realise this is turning into an essay on footwear! That's because my thoughts are in my feet a fair bit these days, due to my problems there. When I was much younger, I was a big fan of stilettos for a while. I also wore platform shoes for real back in the 70s when I was a teen. Funny looking back on it now, how I walked around proudly on elevated bricks of cork!

I like pretty shoes, but never ever at the cost of comfort. Usually I only have a few pairs of "good" shoes, and a pile of worn out ones that get used around the garden.
I had a pair of lace up dancing shoes years ago, similar colour and shape to these but without the extra bit up the leg, and just plain green, no leaves. They were lovely and comfy. I danced for hours in them at a Colonial style ball. 🙂

Re: Word for the Day - Comfort or Play

Hi everyone!

When I left home and got my first job I couldn't wait to purchase my own shoes. Previously mum controlled the purse strings so practical footwear was my only choice.

The first was a knee high pair of Brazilian leather boots. They were tan with a square-ish toe, wide 1-1/2 inch thick heel and extremely soft which made them scrunch up a little around the calf; absolutley beautiful! None of my friends or family had anything like them.

Of all the shoes I've bought, they're my favourite and most memorable. I used to wear them with an A-line mid length skirt and fashionable full length mustard winter coat I bought at Vinnies for a massive $7.00! What a find! In the 70's that was really expensive for the op-shop.

I went on to buy multiple pairs of shoes; like an addiction. Being athletic I could even run in 4 inch stiletto's too. Ahh...the good ole days.

Popular 70's shoes:

JC sandles, Karate shoes, Clogs, Desert Boots, Adidas Sports (3 blue stripes) and cork bottom platforms. (can't believe I actually had a pair!)

Hope

(Thanks @outlander for the trip down memory lane)

Hi @Former-Member@Faith-and-Hope@Mazarita@TAB@SunFlower_7and all here!

I have big feet for a woman- size 14-15😂!- so unlike some people, I don’t really care that much for shoes and usually end up buying guys shoes to fit my feet. I have a pair of white Puma flat sneakers that I got for $40 online in guys in February this year and they look great with my denim skirts and t-shirts, not to mention my 3/4 jeggings (jeans/leggings-jeggings!) that I live in most of the year. I also have a pair of sandals that I bought for the Gold Coast last year that need to be replaced now that summer is here. Also, because I broke my right foot back in 2016, I have to be careful of what shoes i get so that is an issue for me. I do know there are places in the internet that sell big sized shoes for women and I plan to investigate this when I have some spare cash.

Whew, @Judi9877, that does make shoe shopping hard. Ladies I've known with larger sized feet usually end up resorting to Blundstones and thongs, unless they can manage getting something custom made. Hope you can track down someone selling nice ones in your size.

Re: Word for the Day - Comfort or Play

I am a bit of a barefoot contessa ....

Been shoes off inside for 30 years. I noticed the yoga places did it, and the couple of times, I accidentally trod on a pet or toddler's foot confirmed for me that it was a good way to go.

With barefeet I can usually sense and avoid. I also have been known to take off dumb shoes and walk bare feet. I have not had thongs for about 40 years. I have done a lot of walking and so mostly went for sensible, whether or not mother was buying or me.

@Judi9877 enjoy your new shoes when you find them. I was on the big end, but that often meant there were some on bargain, my aunt was in the too big and had to have shoes made for her. Girls and young women seem to be getting taller and shoe sizes are going up ...
