What does it mean to be connected to another person or people related or not?

What does it mean to be connected to another person or people related or not?

I will state from the outset that i do not feel connected to anyone. I guess it stems from a lifetime of being hurt, both in the family and out. I got to a stage at the age of nineteen i was hurt really badly and i vowed i would never let anyone hurt me again. However with recent therapy it become apparent that i do want to feel connected to my immediate family. Scarry stuff i know, very scary. Its bothersome.why cant i connect. Well i guess you cant undo a life time of being closed off in a short space time.

My questions are how do you know you are connecting?

What does it feel like, if anything?

Is it being fully engaged in the conversation, being in the moment.

What do you feel?

I know this is going to take a very long time.

Im interested in others thoughts and experiences.

I like your definition of connection @MoonGal I found it difficult to laugh at all until about 10 years ago.

I wax and wane a lot too ... which is why I changed my pic to a more dynamic beach scene grounded in history ... ebb and flow of tides ... I am more connected to nature than people .. but I do try ...

How are you going @Chris?

Hi appleblossom.

Im ok. Very tired, we went away for the weekend with family, including three grandchildren. They hadnt seen each other in quiet a while so talked none stop! It was lovely to hear them so happy and getting along. Ive slept all day yesterday and most of today. Just exhusted.

Well i threw another wobbly with therapy. I do this everytime i get close to a breakthrough . Cancelled my psychologist, but found my old one. Im waiting on a phone call from her to see what is best for me. I already feel rejected by that remark. That is one of my major sensitivities (rejection) i have recently discovered. The other two are abandonment and criticism . This IPT (interpersonal therapy) seems to be right at the very core of what is wrong with me. It answers so many things But it also opens up a whole can of worms..I guess i see things about myself that i really dont like.

So i will see what tomorow brings.

Hope everyone is doing ok. Thanks for the ongoing support.

Glad to hear that the grandkids enjoyed themselves.

The therapy thing is tricky. I stick out things too long for my own good.

Most people are vulnerable to criticism, especially those who criticise others. We all have things about ourselves that we'd like to change or rather not know about.

Sometimes we need to overcome our resistances and other times we need to listen to our gut instinct.

Sorry I am not more clear. Good luck with your choices.

hello to you all, I am not sure I am on the right chat site, so please let me know ok. I met a lady 2 mths ago and we talked like we had known each other for years, now we are partners, the 1st month was great, then it has become like I am not there at all, I know she is lonely and in lots of pain and suffering but I just don't know how and what to do for her. she told me after a month that she has an mental disorder which is borderline personality disorder and our relationship has just disappeared, I didn't get it at first but I have read about this illness and understanding it more everyday. I am with her everyday but it feels to me like I am more a burden to her being around, can anyone give any thoughts on this as I care and love this lady, thankyou

This site has many threads that could be useful. The lived "experience side" is more for those who experience times of ill health. The "carers" side has more people who are trying to support others. It doesnt really matter. A lot of us fall into both camps.

At least you care @neen but it will also be important to learn some self care skills when in close relationship with someone with MI. There is a site called "the shack" which has good reading.

Take care of both of you.
