Hatred and Love

Hatred and Love

Anger at Family

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone is in the same boat with me regarding family and anger.

I come from an unhealthy family. Basically very violent and mind controlling and I've been an adult since I was 12. Since my diagnoses with Bipolar I have stop talking to my father as he is very draining, mind controlling, four year old in and adult body who's answer to anything difficult is name calling, physical threats and guilt tripping.

My mother is over involved and everything effects her. From a non smile on my face to my weekly activities. When I was a teen if I was in a grumpy mood she would say the negative vibe would hit her and make her scared and put her back out and she would be sick in bed. It was typical teenager non scary I'm grumpy. Since my diagnoses she's been seeing a councillor to 1. Deal with it 2. Educate her self 3. Grow a backbone.

My father is trying everything to get back in my life from sending me gifts and threatening to beat me up and claiming I put him in a hospital to get his brother trying to convince me to talk to him and guilt tripping my sweet hearted zero clue to the games his playing to get him to get me to talk to him.

My mother is being supportive but way over top but not as over top as she can get. But she's telling me all about her counselling lessons and how she didn't have courage when I was young to leave the boyfriends back then. It's not my fault. I'm a good mum.

And all I want them to say is sorry we stuffed up. But that will never happen as I know they believe they did the best they could but I believe they didn't and it's contributed to me having bipolar.

But I'm starting to pull away from them as I can't see someone and talk about all my childhood pain and then act normal with them. I'm also getting this way with childhood friends and wanting to write some nasty letters to my schools for not interfering and I know they knew something was wrong at home. I just feel really angry and restful. And I hate being angry but I have a right to this anger. And everyone is like you need to forgive but how can your forgive when your having to bring it up to the surface and it's so painful and I'm having full blown meltdowns leaving me unable to speak or function for days.

But they get so upset when I do it. I know so many people on here would wish there mum is seeking help to help them. But I just can't stand it as she's making it all about her and her being in the right. And my dad well who cares. I just hope I don't regret not talking to him but if he changes which everyone can I might re think it.

Am I wrong to be thinking these things and having so much anger and hatred towards them? Should I be happy they want to support me.

I sometimes wish I could run away and leave everyone that has hurted me. Well this is half the reason I stopped seeing someone because I can't deal with this let alone my illness.

Re: Hatred and Love

I think many people have similar feelings @Former-Member. I certainly did.

Love/hate pain and the whole catastrophe. Actually I am beginning to smell a rat when people dont admit to some .. Maybe I am getting older and more canny at last.

Where you draw the line about what you do with your family of origin is mainly up to you. It is your journey and yours alone. Nobody else will live it or feel the consequences of your choices no matter how good a counsellor doc or shrink.

Give yourself TIME and SPACE to process your feelings and relationships with them. You cant both process your feelings and forgive them overnight ... there are too many steps on the way. It will probably take a few years at least.

I am guessing they are separated from what you said about mum and boy friends but I wasnt sure if they were yours or hers.

HOWEVER there is the issue that it is difficult to actually judge someone as not doing enough if you havent walked in their shoes, so just keep a place in your heart ... for the possibility that maybe they did their best, given their circumstances and knowledge at the time things were happening. Most people dont deliberately set out to hurt or mess up their kids.

We can imagine we will do a terrific job and make better choices than our parents but until we are actually juggling the pressures and managing a family of creation. That is providing the roof, putting the food on the table and doing all the other bits and pieces ... 24/7 for the 25 years that it takes to raise a child... it is actually hard to make that call.

There are different types of self-hood boundaries ... hard edged and soft ... maybe you have a firmer edged boundary than your mother ... it is neither right or wrong ... it is just that we are different. You shouldnt blame yourself for being a teenager and I hope your mother doesnt.

We feel what we feel. We have some control over our feelings but CBT and DBT can only achieve so much. Feelings and cognitions and judgements are different, but interrelated.

Self hood boundaries are a bit different to the boundaries we place on other's behaviours. Closeness and distance between family is up to us to negotiate. What we let filter into our hearts and what we block will all be different. There is value in strength and softness, sometimes it is good to have a bit of both in our personalities.

Its bloody hard @Former-Member But I think you are a spirited and caring woman, with a sense of social conscience who has the right to create as a good a life as possible.

Re: Hatred and Love

Hi @Former-Member,

It's ok to feel anger and want to distance yourself from your family. It sounds like they were and are still unable to give you the love that you need and deserve. It's ok to set boundaries, to love and care for yourself, and to not expose you to harmful situations.

In saying this, I once heard that hate and anger are secondary emotions. These feelings are a result of emotions that have not yet been resolved. From what you've written, and I'm guessing it's only the tip of the iceberg, it seems that you've been let down, and have had your trust broken a lot. If these feelings have not been worked through, then it makes sense that you're feeling angry.

Do what you need to work through this anger in a productive way. I wonder if @Chris can comment here. I believe she's had some struggles and resentments towards family. She's just posted here today about finding it difficult to connect because of family hurt. Perhaps she can share some insights here?

Re: Hatred and Love

@Appleblossom I'm very different to mum mother. She's very forgiving, trusting, soft temperament, loving and a walk over. While I'm very straight up front, loud, demanding, untrusting, I do forgive but not no where as quickly as her but I'm very loving but no one will ever walk over me.

I was refrencing her BFs. She had very nasty violent BF but kept going back to them as she needed to be loved and belived they could change in a week.

I try and tell myself she's different but I end up just thinking she stupid, weak and over needy and I got so upset last year I told her that. She was shocked but now is seeking help over those issues because she agreed and said she's lost her voice and needs to get it back. I have to always inform her someone is taking advantage of her and teach her how to say no.

I'm no parent and but I know it's a lot harder then it looks and I know she did her best to provide food and a roof even though I would only have an orange to eat for a whole day at primary school for months. But when it came to my safety I was put last and her needs put first and that ticks me off badly!

I know it takes time but I don't like feeling like this. I wish I could wake up tommorow and feel human. Also with my faith im meant to forgive. And everyone including my husband is like you need to let go and forgive it's in the bible and it's better for your health. But it's easy for them to say, they weren't chased out of there home with a guy trying to harm you with a deadly object and then be told not to tell anyone and play happy family's and respect him.

I'm very much able like you to smell a rat. I'm very good at looking at people and analysing them and if they are a good person or two stay clear. Even as a 12 year old my mum and partner would bring new friends home and I would be like that person is not a good person I don't want them in the house. They would say I'm crazy and then two weeks be like if so so calls I'm not hear they are crazy and we want nothing to do with them. Thankfully my mum figured out I got a good sense on that and started listing to me and took caution with people. My doctor thinks this is a strength of mine and also a hindrance on me forming relationships.

<br>;@cherrybomb I didn't think I had an issue trusting people until I started getting help and I don't even 100% trust my husband. I have a massive wall up. He thinks it strange though because I got this huge wall up, I don't like people in general, I over analysis everyone and hardly give them a chance and he thinks that's very understandable. But then I got an out there personality, I love socialising and meeting people and loving on everyone. He's like you are literally on two trains while everyone else is on one and he's like we need to figure out how to put you on one healthy train.

I don't want to chip away at this iceberg as its to painful and I rather hide my pain deep down. I love my mum besides loser boyfriends she's my best friend but I can't get over the loser boyfriends and me being second and her help to my illness. It's so weird. Hi mum how are you? Oh today in my doctors session I discussed the time you laughed at me while your BF belittled me.!

I just wish the soloution was easy. Because I feel bad not talking to my dad and bad for not wanting to talk to my mum. But I shouldn't feel bad for doing what's right for me. I need to stop putting others first.

Re: Hatred and Love

You're last sentence says so much @Former-Member.

You do have the right to put your own well-being above that of ANYONE else. If you're continually placing others above your own needs then you may never get to where you need to be, never be where you can truly give back to those around you who deserve you in their life.

You really have to consider the effect others are having on your life. No matter how close the relationship, sometimes we need to distance ourselves from those having a negative effect. Your mother at least seems to be trying to be better, but just isn't getting it yet. Have you spoken to her about how you feel she is turning it around to be about her instead of being able to understand, help & support you? I really don't know how that conversation would go.

I know I've been doing it a lot lately, but here's another quote I think fits well here.

"Not all toxic people are cruel and uncaring. Some of them love us dearly. Many of them have good intentions. Most are toxic to our being simply because their needs and way of existing in the world force us to compromise ourselves and our happiness. They aren’t inherently bad people, but they aren’t the right people for us. And as hard as it is, we have to let them go. Life is hard enough without being around people who bring you down, and as much as you care, you can’t destroy yourself for the sake of someone else. You have to make your well-being a priority. Whether that means breaking up with someone you care about, loving a family member from a distance, letting go of a friend, or removing yourself from a situation that feels painful — you have every right to leave and create a safer space for yourself."

Take care.

Re: Hatred and Love

I think it takes a lot of courage to admit that you feel hatred. I have also heard@CherryBomb ideas about secondary emotions.

I have felt hatred too and it takes a lot of energy and commitment not to let it wreak havoc in your mind and in your life. Like you I also loved my mother. Love and hate are both possible about the one relationship.

In many ways my mother was opposite to yours. Very strong and very independent, confident of her charms, flirted with doctor while my dad was treated as a malingerer on the day he died, and never really wanted another man in her life. We became church musicians. I respected my mother but in the end I saw she like manipulating priests, she used her position as organist in 3 parishes to keep power over them. She was very proud and did not like anyone to control her but was not honest in many aspects of her relationships with the oldest 3 children who she abandoned in the 60s.

I was lucky I never had to put up with the scenarios of boyfriends, though i did see others have to deal with it. So I have a fair idea that your situation was pretty severe. I did have to deal with the fact that she put her own safety over mine when I was young, when I was an adult and even had my sister phone once, cos mother had left the house after an argument with my psychotic brother, and left the 2 toddlers she was babysitting for me. So our first babysitting event didnt go too well and we went settled my brother out of anger, and picked up the girls. I could settle him usually and she hated me for that.

My mother never improved. Never said sorry. It got worse not better. Your mother may or may not improve. She does deserve to get counselling but I would be self protective and limiting.

But she was my mother and I loved her. She was so proud and had to bend down and pick up tomatoes and vegies at the market when the stallholders werent looking. We were that desperate. It wasnt my fault and my brother and I worked our butts off as kids to bring money into the family but she could not appreciate us.

She also pushed the forgiveness line excessively. It really messed with my head. The truth is I didnt need to forgive my mother. I had understood about the abandonment, not blamed her, but it was still pretty bloody extreme. She hadnt forgiven us for being born .. that was the real issue. She just wanted to be a fancy pianist.

Only YOU will know what seems fair. Dont cut completely but take the space you need.

We all know hatred chews us up and is horrible to live with. But now I tend to think it can be trite to trot out the forgiveness platitutde. it wont fix everythng up. Being half dutch I got the Corry Ten Boom story etc. In the end I came to feel Corrie only had to feel the forgiving vibe for a day while she met the commandant from the camp. I had to deal with denial and mind games constantly in my most imtimate relations and more violent deaths in peacetime Melbourne than mother's family ever experienced in WWII. Not saying it wasnt tough for them ... they were just outside of Rotterdam ... but the death count is an unforgiving statistic. Premature forgiveness can put us in Stockholm Syndrome like situations.

I did a lot of work going through Christian "FORGIVENES" workbooks, applying biblical passages etc. Sum up ... Joseph in Egypt did not forgive too quickly .. he tricked and put a brother in prison ... and wanted them to prove their genuineness and remorse before he sent them home with grain during the famine.

I value this conversation a lot. @Former-Member I hope I am not putting too much of my story out to swamp yours ... just sharing and noticing similarities and differences in the hope that it helps. In the end I had to put up with my mother mocking my hospitality to the nephews and nieces as "she is good at being in an orphanage" .... cos there were lots of kids. My brother was good at begetting but did not hang around.

Suffering does terrible things to people. I too am a fairly strong person. I wouldnt have survived at all if it wasnt for that.

All we can do is learn as much as we can and make the best decisions possible .. try and make sure history doesnt repeat. Herstory then goes and throws double whammies at us.. but it is better to live your life and love .. than never to have loved at all.

Re: Hatred and Love

Hey @Drac0 Yes I need to put myself first but it just feels weird and not right. I always put others first because others mean the world to me and I love them but I don't love myself. Also if I slightly put myself first everyone gets shocked by it and taken back if I say no to helping. Then I over think it in my head and think they think I'm being selfish, they don't like me, I'm not a bad person or am I, what type of self absorbed friends are these, I hate them all, I'm all alone. Then I bake them a cake and applogise for moths for not being able to help them. Who knows what they are thinking but me I make a big drama in my head.

Yes it's good mum is trying to get help but it does my head in when she complains about her tinny issues and try's to compare them to me and wants sympathy. Oh you had a poor day at work that sucks while I'm thinking to myself well at least you didn't have a break down selfed harm and tooked a bunch of pain killers for weeks in a row to get through work. I haven't told her about the self harm as it would cause her to break down over react and fly to stay with me and follow me room to room. The only people that know about that is my husband and my doctor who noticed a self inflected injury on me and lifted my sleeve to see a ton more. My phycatrist doesn't even know. But I'm not seeing him anymore so ohwell.

But yer she just when I say oi lady you made a mistake she goes on how she did the best she could and I'm negative and only focous on the negatives. My husband says I'm a bit negative to but I figured out why I am. Yes I've had high lights and amazing times in my life but I don't know of anyone seeking help to cope with the good times. The negative times though do need to be mentioned to start the healing. Also I think being beaten up sticks more in your head then reciving flowers after a dance performance at school.

I've also tried bring it up when we are in good moods bad moods nicely and bluntly and she thinks I'm on the attack. But then again I have a right to attack if I wanted to. I just think she's deeply ashamed that she wasn't a fit mother and put her love before my safety.

When she informed my dad I have bipolar and that I'm doing intense counselling not to be shocked if i stop talking or lashes out because im going to have to be reliving all the pain and hurt they both caused on myself. She knows she made a mistake she will apologise but with an excuse and I don't believe her excuses are good enough and there is not excuse.

@Appleblossom it's not nice but it is knowing there is someone out there that understands how forced forgiveness can mess with your head and the whole church aspect of it. It's so easy to tell someone to forgive someone but to do it can be hard. A few years ago my husbands auntie came to my old old place of work through my check out with her pram. I obviously did not check the pram or bags as she was family to me. Little did I know next in line was a mystery shopper who was following her as she had a bunch of stolen goods in her pram and bag. She obviously got caught and the police where involved and they knew she was my husband Aunty. I so could of been fired except due to the shock in my face the security guard belived me and all the managers knew it was not in my character. Also all the managers told me she was in the arresting room crying I had nothing to do with it. As you can imagine I was hurt and explosive mad. I told my BF now husband about it who was in shock and didn't believe me. We told his mum her sister who was like that answers why she's been getting nice stuff. Later that week I saw her and she tried to talk to me and I just death started her and she was like I didn't know it was in my pram I'm sorry they belived me I'm not getting charged. I went to work next day talked to the cops she was getting charged. So she took advantage of me nearly got me fired and a criminal record and lied to my face. I told my BF I'm mad at her and he's like you need to forgive and started pushing it so hard at me saying that's what's in the bible and I need to have a loving heart so I forced myself to think I forgave her. But the other week 5 years later I went to know my husband and said how dare you tell me who I forgive and who to love. I haven't forgiven her and you made me feel rotten and sick with pressure. He then apologised and said he was young and silly and to focused on the image of the church and I have all right to be mad and never trust her in my life but I should be civil for the family and also because I love her son and I agree with that. But gosh focrced forgiveness does not work and it's horrible!!!!

That sucks about the baby sitting issue. You think you would be able to rely on your mum. It is good you can talk and help control your brother. When I was 13 I learnt how to control my step dad when he was high drunk and in a violent rant. My mum and her best friends would hide behind me shaking scared while I talked him down and convinced him to sleep somewhere else for the night. I learnt how to defuse it and protect myself and my mum or who ever was in the house.

I won't let history repeat it self. I'm not going to bring kids into the world knowing I'm so unwell. I can't do that to them. Even though I know I would do everything possible to be the best I could be I know I could have a slip and freak out be bed ridden or even worse and I can't do that to them. I don't even have children but love the children I was meant to have.

With my dad I'm just going to keep him out of mylife. He's never going to change nor attempt. He think she has and tells my husband he has but I'm very similar to him and know every angle he's playing at. Took me years to learn not to behave like him but glad I learnt it. My mum on the other hand at least she's trying and being active in helping me and helping her self and she has been there 24-7 during all this and will speak to me early hours in the morning if I'm breaking down and sends funny care packages for me. I just wished she could stop being over emotional and accept responsibility. She always tells me I need to treat people right and not play the blame game and make myself a victim but she's the queen of doing it herself and it drives me insane

Re: Hatred and Love

It is good to be clear about a few things like that supermarket episode with the auntie.

it is good that your husband apologised as it was an immature application of religious concepts.

Glad your mother is trying hard enough to communicate her care to you. It may never be straight forward, but at least you know. "Victim" and "blame game" words are thrown around often to deflect the conversation.

Maybe you are right about your father.

I love your full-on and direct style and passion.

Take care
