New here but not new to mental illness

New here but not new to mental illness

Hi,

I joined a while ago and never posted out of shyness and I suppose not knowing what to say. I then rejoined recently and again didn't post.

I rang SANE this afternoon for some insight into how to help myself with my depersonalisation and derealisation. The derealisation and depersonalisation are my two main mental health issues at the moment. The female I spoke to was so helpful (to me that was a shock after having bad experiences with Lifeline, Beyond Blue and GriefLine as well) that I thought I should take the plunge and post an introduction.

I'm 44. My 13 year old sister died in 1992 from medical negligence. I was 20 at the time and the eldest of three girls. She is the youngest. I found out 6 days later that I was pregnant with our first child. I was so elated about being pregnant that the grief from my sister's death didn't hit me until after our son was born.

I have had little to no support dealing with the mental illness. I would say no support but I have seen psychiatrists on and off over the years, they just haven't been very helpful. Some have actually told me that my problems were too great for them.

I've tried to book myself into the local mental hospital twice, second time being in September last year when I was suicidal. They refused to admit me the first time as I was 'too sane', last year they refused as I wasn't schizophrenic or paranoid.

I've been diagnosed with a multitude of mental illnesses all are based on or caused by my fear of death.

My husband is my support person, I call him my 'security blanket'. Up until 11 days ago I was with him 24 hours a day 7 days a week for almost 10 years. We bought a small retail business in 2006 and had to close it in December. He's just started back at his previous company and I'm finding it hard to adjust to him being gone 12 hours a day five days a week.

I had a phone call from him just after the lovely female from SANE helped me this afternoon. It was to say the bank has started proceedings to sell our house (that I have grown up in and mortgaged to buy him the business) as we are behind $5000- in mortgage repayments. Given the house would sell for a minimum $600 000- it's a very low blow. We asked all Charities for help last year with anything they could give us towards food or bills so we wouldn't fall behind in the mortgage. Not one of them would help us because we had a small business.

I am also in the process of applying for DSP, final appointment is about two weeks away but the bank doesn't care about that.

As I have had mental illness for so long this is just a very brief introduction that I've put off for too long.

Hello,

My name is Baboo here and i am one of the moderators on the forum.

I would like to say a big welcome and i hope you enjoy your time and perhaps connections you might make here in the forum.

Im sorry to read your going through such a stressful time right now.

About your house repayments- have you asked your superannuation fund for advise? im not sure these days but i read once you can ask for assistance in curtain circumstance's. i guess its worth a try?

Im so glad you have found one worker you have been happy with- theres a lot of different people with different personalities in this world, i think it is hard at times to find a health worker your happy with and comfortable with.

Every one at sane that i have met and spoken to have been lovely.

Does any one else here have any advise or stories to share that might help?

Thank you,

Yes, we went through the rigmarole with withdrawing superannuation every so often last year to pay the bills. I am sure he should still have some left. I will remind my husband about that again tomorrow morning to see if we can withdraw some more asap (unfortunately it seems to have taken a minimum two months each time we have done it) as tonight he's not in a good mood to talk to because of the bank.

Hello @JaJoLaHe

I have been in the "too hard' pile, but worse is when people keep collecting from you when they dont know what to do.

I have experiences a lot of de-personalisation/realisation. Probably due to hypervigilance starting at around 6. It was a lot worse til my mid 20s when I started various somatic therapies ... It is not as much an issue now. I found immersion in physical and musical activities the most helpful.

Sorry to hear about possible sale of your house. Somehow the system doesnt always help those who help themselves. I had life made more complicated by running small businesses, but I am also glad I had the initiative.

I often used to be an observer .. went to about 20 schools ... always watching from the edges .. others and myself ... now I am old .. I jump in the deep end more quickly.

I hope you find support here. I have a feeling you also have a lot to offer.

regards Apple

Hello @JaJoLaHe

Welcome to the Forums.

It sounds like you have been coping with a lot more or less on your own for many years. It's good to hear you have a supportive husband by your side. Were you able to talk to your husband about the superannuation or contact your fund?

Negative experiences with the mental health system can be so discouraging. I’m really sorry to hear that you’ve been turned away by the hospital when you’ve needed support. There are lots of different types of support out there though and it can often take time and perseverance to find something that is helpful for you. As well as psychiatrists and hospitals, there are psychologists, peer support programs and outreach support where someone can visit you at home to provide assistance. Sorry if I’m listing things you’ve already tried but it can be good to remember there are a range of options. I think sometimes having different support options in place can help in different small ways to make life more manageable.

From what I understand about derealisation and depersonalisation, they can be a way of disconnecting or dissociating to protect yourself emotionally. Some members have discussed this topic here including @Chris, @Appleblossom, @Tight-Control, @Rusalkin, @lostit and @Peter_Pan78. @BlueBay and @Former-Member have also mentioned dissociation or depersonalisation. Perhaps some of those members can offer some helpful insights.

Thanks for introducing yourself @JaJoLaHe. I’m sure you will meet lots of lovely people here on the Forums, all with their own experiences and perspectives. Welcome once again 🙂

Hi @JaJoLaHe, welcome to here.

Just on the bank issue you raised, I don't know where you are but most states have a community legal centres that helps people with credit and financial issues, including negotiating with lenders. Eg. Financial Rights Legal Centre in NSW and Consumer Credit Legal Centre in WA. If your situation is outside their remit, they should be able to refer you to someone else who can assist.
