I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

It’s an interesting idea and I’ll have to think of ways to plan around these types of questions, but normally it’s those questions from family or close friends who already know I’ve been unwell, so when they ask I have to wonder why

As much as Christmas day brings increased anxiety, I'd rather go to the lunch and try to participate and hope some of their Christmas joy rubs off onto me. Better than sitting home alone - as then my depression will rear its ugly head

Alrighty Question 3!

Often, around this time of year we lose access to both our professional and personal supports which are our usual go-to’s throughout the year. In addition, social media can have us comparing our festive season to others - further highlighting our pain. The awesome news is there ARE ways to shift this perception and enjoy a Christmas full of self-love and acceptance.

What are some of your own self-care distractions you find helpful during the holiday season?

Yes, it seems insensitive, doesn't it? I wonder if it is about the 'status quo' and not really thinking about the impact on you of what they are saying and asking. Social niceties perhaps. I am certainly not implying that you should take responsibility for others' insensitivity or whatever we might call it, but what would it be link to ponder on why people behave this way, in terms of depersonalising it?

@Former-Member@Robert_Lifeline I don’t see my psychologist now until end of January. Same as my psych.

I already feel alone.

I’m usually fine with it, and can either deflect or answer as much or as little as I feel like. Unfortunately it’s late that night when I’m lying in bed sleepless and mind racing, ruminating about the day, dissecting every interaction, second guessing myself and my choices, castigating myself.

@Former-Member

Yes, it is really important I believe to value and prioritise self-care. Develop a routine that you can realistically follow. Self-care is a proactive, preventative commitment to doing what you need to do in order to create a robust/resilient ‘you’. It is also about dealing with stress (the reaction to adverse events).The three most important self-care activities: Enough sleep, enough water, exercise.

Self-care includes emotional self-care, spiritual self-care (or being with nature if you don't identify as spiritual), physical self-care..
