Special Online Event // Breaking the stigma of mental illness// Thurs 18 Oct, 9 30pm

This month, SBS is screening a new show with a bit of a controversial name – but the content is set to be quite powerful. “How ‘Mad’ Are You?” is a two-part documentary aiming to breakdown stigma, myths and stereotypes of mental illness in a whole new way.

In the show, ten Australians from all backgrounds and ages spend a week together. Five have a history of mental illness. Five do not. All ten people agreed to take part in the hope of breaking down stigma.

Straight after the second and final episode airs tonight on Thursday 18th of October, we're lucky enough to have one of the cast members join us here on the forums so we can all have an online conversation about stigma – and what we can about it in our everyday lives.

Come and join us for a one hour, live facilitated discussion with our guest on Thursday 18 October from 9:30pm – 10:30pm AEDT right here on this thread.

It’s a bit of a late one, as we will start immediately after the show airs, but it will be a special one-off occasion so could be worth pushing past a few yawns for those of us with earlier bed times!

Do you have a question for the cast? Or a question about stigma you’d like to see discussed? <question link now closed - we'll do our best to touch on all the questions submitted so far! Thank you!>

If you have any questions for us about the session or show, do email us at team@saneforums.org

Want to be reminded that this is happening on the night? Hit the “Support” button below and we will send you an email notification on the night.

Thanks all, looking forward to it!

We saw a rough edit in january. (I can't believe we filmed this a year ago!). Watching this really showed how much they chose an incredible group of people.

Hi @TAB and @Shaz51 (enjoy watching it!)

We thought the show was a really interesting way to start a discussion about stigma, stereotypes and mental illness – so for everyone, what was the main thing you took away from the show? And especially for you Cameron someone has submitted a question - Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve by participating in the show?

Good evening forumites
And gday to you @cameron
I have not seen the episode tonight but will watch it tomorrow.
I found that last week's ep was really interesting because the specialists found it hard to pinpoint some people.

BY the way Cameron, they certainly do all seem like a wonderful group of people! Do you keep in touch?

There was a lot of vox pop that we did over the course of the week. Everything they showed was incredibly necessary, I just wish we could tell you so much more that happened. The bond and understanding we had (especially after the shared trauma of the stand up comedy!) really brought us all so close together)

HI @MDT! And that with the specialists certainly continued into this week as well!

What was the main thing you took away from the show?

That even my own understanding of my diagnosis is constantly changing. To find that I have a lot more coherence and mental coordination than I really expected was a very emotional experience. It really shows that recovery is something you can trust.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve by participating in the show?

The main thing I wanted to achieve was to show that I am a functioning, regular person, a person who has hopes, thoughts, opinions and ideas about this existence that we live in. I hope that came across. What I didn’t expect was that I was more functional than I even expected.

@s-jayI took away that there is a very thin line between who had a mental illness and who doesn't, to the point where besides one person, the experts got it wrong. Also with the right therapy and right help, people with a MI can acheive anything they want. They are not defined by their MI.
