I'm not depressed but can't cope with stress at all, so what am I?

I'm not depressed but can't cope with stress at all, so what am I?

I'm a worrier and have always gotten stressed easily. I have been depressed before and I know what that feels like. I don't feel low and hopeless, I just feel frigging tightly wound and agitated and prickly all the time! I am a full time mom of 2 boys, 2 and 4 yrs old. When the kids are quiet and calm (which is extremely rare), then I am calm and quite content to get on with my chores, but at the moment I am getting so overwhelmed with triggers like the noise and chaos of my kids fighting or rough playing or jumping on the furniture or racing down the hallway screeching. I seem to get really anxious and tense and angry and explosive the minute my kids don't cooperate or listen to me or make too much noise or my husband does something daft. I seem to have lost my ability to keep calm and clear and my head starts to spin and I snap all the time. It feels physical more than mental depression. I just feel like physically I don't have the resources to cope and I'm going straight into limbic fight mode (or have the desire to run away, flight). My skin has also suddenly gone mad, (congested and spotty) and my hair is thinning. I can no longer drink alcohol (which was my saving grace at night. 🙂 as I get such a headache and vomit, even on one glass! It's like I can't tolerate toxicity in my system any more. I'm currently taking probiotics, omegas, and magnesium powder as I really feel like I out of balance and am lacking something but the magnesium with vit B isn't helping. Gosh, sorry to harp on, I don't know who to see or ask or what to buy but this is starting to get me and my kids and my husband down. My poor kids especially, are starting to look scared of me because I'm so explosive 😞

Coffeegirl, that Ted talk is fantastic!

What did I do? Don't try this at home, kids.

I ate a can of spinach.

I had a bex, a cup of tea, and a nice lie down.

I changed into Superman in a phone box.

No. I hit rock bottom, bounced but didn't break. Don't try this at home.

I had enough insight to realise I needed help. Thank Heaven. I tried to find a therapist that I felt comfortable with. I tried the medications the GP and the headshrinkers gave me.

There's a modern fable about a town on a cliffside. People would fall off the cliff and if they survived the ambulance would take them to hospital.

Then some bright spark said, "What if we put a sign at the top of the cliff that says 'Stop, Danger, Don't Fall Off The Cliff'?

The people laughed. But after a long time and many fatalities another bright spark said, "A sign would save money. All the ambulances we have are costing too much."

The people could understand money, and a sign was put up at the top of the cliff.

Hi coffeegirl,

Thanks for your post about breathing. Its the nuts and bolts, the simple effective little things that make the difference.

In a perfect world we would have stress relief taught in schools. Maybe its not that far away.

Heavens to Bettsy, there's a need for it.

As for this little black duck, I learnt to meditate uummmm when I was young and foolish. I just breathe, and its called a long word in another language - 'Anapanasati'. But its just breathing.

Human, It is perfectly normal to feel some level of stress, if you aren't stressing start paying attention to the world around you! When stress becomes a problem is when it overwhelms you to the point of not being able to do things at all. I see lots of coping stratagies all of which are awesome, but the key lies in finding your own tools that work amongst those amazing suggestions. One thing I have learnt to do is know my stress triggers, for example I am aware that being in large crowds where I have nothing to 'focus' on tends to freak me out. For example if I am on a crowded train going home I tend to freak out more than if I am going to work, the reason is on the way to work I am planning my day ahead where as coming home I am tired and not thinking of specifics so I notice people around me, noises become heightend, faces become threatening and I sometimes feel trapped. The way I get around it is to distract myself, some music is good or even a book on my phone, ahh Charles Darwin your work on Natural Selection has saved my poor brain many a time! So if you know where it is you get stressed or what situation, ie talking to your friend on the phone whiilst their partner is yealing, you can work around it, do the things you love to do but minismise exposure to the stressor. In the last example you might call your friend when you know their partner is at work. The stupid thing about stress is how self propigating it is, we stress about stress. Don't. I know it sounds silly but understanding the fact that stress is perfectly normal and that you have full persmission to stress lightens the load so damned much you are already in a better place to deal with it when it arrives 😄

Tastes just like...

Hi cherrycola,

This may be off topic but the song by the '60s band The Kinks has been going through my head.

"I met her downtown in old Soho where they drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry cola."

The song is "Lola", released in 1970.

And the song Cherry Bomb is on the soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy..which is very funny but also very violent so not a good diversion from stress necessarily..

Re: I'm not depressed but can't cope with stress at all, so what am I?

Wow, everyone here has so much good advice and value to add, honestly thank you people. So I've been researching and writing down all the things I can do or use to cope with stress and have found they really are a few simple things that I guess I just need to practice and practice until it comes automatically to me. The calm breathing thing is a great way to momentarily block everything out and centre myself. Then what I have found is helping is to quickly take my thoughts to this very second, in this exact moment, the now, and think about what is good, what is working or right or positive, what can I right now -even tho there is chaos unfolding, what can I right now be grateful for and appreciate, like ....having all my teeth, that's a good thing, or having 2 healthy boys, even tho they are screaming, they are here with me and loved. This focusing on the positives in the here and now is helping to suck me out of the stressful event and into a happier space. That and the Chinese herbs for stress. And music. La la la la-Lola.... 😉

And yes, knowing that stress is like the sun. ( thanx BatG, that has SO stuck with me) and that we are human and it's natural to respond to stressors. Nyxsong- my next job is to notice triggers so I can catch myself and use some sun screen before I burn. You're right BatGuano, why aren't they teaching this to kids in school !!!?!!

Re: I'm not depressed but can't cope with stress at all, so what am I?

Sounds a lot like myself I've had pnd and anxiety and have had depression before and during my pregnancy. My little boy had just turned one and j have a five year old girl who is just driving me crazy. She's at the baby constantly, her behavior is awful at the moment😞 She is rough with her brother and is constantly arguing and disrespectful to me. She answers back and is just so defiant . In return I just feel like I can't cope with her, I snap at everyone the minute I get stressed and I feel like I'm just stressed and anxious all the time, I get angry with her and yell at her then I feel so guilty and how I should be able to be calm and reason with her but I just lose it 😩 I am seeing a psychologist and my gp is awesome, have you talked to your gp about how you're feeling, might be worth a chat xx
