Public Speaking Anxiety

Hi Forumites 🙂 or anyone reading this,

I have just read a news story about a Gentleman by the name of Benjamin Habib, he was on Breakfast News talking about his topic of expertise and froze with social anxiety and had to stop the interview short, i am posting this so others can read and relate to social anxiety.

Thank you Mr Benjamin Habib for you strength and courage to talk about this topic, please SANE moderators if you could please have him on a topic Tuesday or as an ambassador for SANE, his story is so amazing.

anyway here is the link to the news story.

Hi @Appleblossom,

Yes such an amazing story, in the most humiliating of circumstances imaginable, the poor fellow, it is so amazing to see the courage and strength shown for him o speak out again after the event and aknowledge what had happened and that he is willing to overcome it.

It was so sad to read some people making fun of him though 😞

i do hope he manages to overcome his Anxiety and becoms an advocate for MH.

Re: Public Speaking Anxiety

I agree he had a lot of courage as well as stoicism in the face of trolls.

it seems he was expecting the trolls and that gave him some forewarning to choose not to be effected.

Hi @Jacques, thanks for sharing that story. What a fantastic way he has had of processing the trauma, to write about it openly and 'own it' almost immediately so that others, like you and me, can be inspired to greater self-acceptance and perhaps boldness in relation to our own social anxieties. Thanks again.

Yes, i agree i was so moved by the story, that is why i thought i might share it with you all, it is so sad in todays society that their is still so much stigma of MH issues, i was hoping with the Australian of the year a few years back something would change.

Maybe i am expecting to much of society, maybe it needs to be baby steps.

you are right though, all his anxiety and blank mind, but still managed to forsee the fallout of his interview. i do hope he manages to overcome this.

@Mazarita, no problem, as i said it was such a moving story, you are right, a good thing for us forumites to be shown from time to time that things can and will get better 🙂

Thank you @Jacques for posting this. I take my hat off to dr habib. I'm a "failed" academic. I'm a good teacher, good researcher, crap media commentator, crap meeting delegate, crap administrator. His comments about the academic world and his anxiety issues touched a nerve with me. And social sciences was my first 'area', and la Trobe my alma mater.

it would be terrific if he chose to join us here. And I assign the Foo Fighters song, My Hero, to Dr Benjamin Habib.

Hi @GothMum, you are spot on, what a hero to us all.

Please try not to be so hard on yourself, we can't be good at everything, no matter how hard we try, i am sure you are a great person, with many good qualities, try to focus on the good qualities and work on the bad ones.

Life is one long learning journey, i am glad you read this and can relate, i was so overwhelmed for this man, i struggle to speak to someone at the front door, i have not in 15 years, i take my hat off to anyone who ca njust manage that, let alone go on national TV.

Take care @GothMum, hope to see you around the forums 🙂
