OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi there

This is my first post . I'll try and make it brief.

I've had OCD for 30 years now and it involves constant visual distractions. I am always trying NOT to look at inappropriate (private) parts when talking to people and also my peripheral vison (eyes flicking back and forward) with people in the corner of my vision.

The peripheral vision problem may involve being distracted by people whenever they come into my field of view e.g at a cafe I must either face a wall where I can't see anybody or put an arm up to shield my eyes.

I remember the exact day in school (year 9) I was sitting in Geography class watching a documentary on the television and casually glanced at the crutch of the guy sitting to the right of me. I thought in my head that 'you can't look there!' and ever since that moment my staring/peripheral vision OCD has made life a struggle ever since.

As far as therapies are concerned , you name it and I have defintiely tried it, from psychiatrists to spiritual healers and all of the medications that that you can poke a stick at.

I had a break from traditional treatments for quite a number of years and tried the natural healing side of things, with the occasional visit to my GP for SRI scripts. At one stage I was borderline ready to give up on living entirely.

As a last resort I decided to reconnect with my psychiatrist to see if anything new regarding treatments had popped up. He told me there were not alot of options apart from the usual SRI medications .

Almost as an aside he mentioned that ADHD was closely related to OCD and that there can often be a combination of the two.

He told me there have been some success stories with the use of PRESCIBED STIMULANTS for some types of OCD. I was asked if I wanted to give it a try and after thinking about it for half a second I said 'yes'.

The following day I popped the new medication into my mouth and had my early morning walk with the dogs.

Roughly an hour later I noticed something I hadn't felt in 30 years.

Another dog walker was approaching and usually I would have strolled in the other direction as the thoughts and anxiety would overwhelm me.

But something had changed. It was as if an intencity volume switch had been turned down inside my head. I was able to make much better eye contact and felt a new internal confidence .

The level of intencity with the OCD thoughts had diminished quite a bit.

I have continued taking dthe stimulants everyday (morning and lunchtimes) ,I do not feel like I am on any medications at all, (not like some I have had in the past)

The new STIMULANT has helped my OCD more than any other medication.

I would say that the improvement is 50 to 60 % better, life is easier then it has been for many years.

I guess you could say the stimulant helps with the less intense OCD inducing environments ie going to the shops, walking in the park and general day to day engagements involving people.

Just thought I'd better let eveybody out there who suffers from a similar form of OCD that this new treatment helps me a lot and maybe it can help them also. I could not mention the name of the medication directly as per the rules of this forum.

Thanks and good luck

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi @rejee. Hope all of you are fine. The core idea of my method is that when we chat with some person in various social situations , our primary attention is towards his face. But apart from his face all the region around his face is in our view. Imagine a person and you sitting facing each others in an office. His full body is visible to you (no other object like table in between). A cockroach comes in that room and crawls up his trouser. You will be able to notice cockroach even before it has reached his knees. Although you were chatting with him and looking at his face.
So the point is that we humans have two eyes on our face and objects within a large angle are in our view. Although while facing someone we look at his/her face but objects around his face (left and right, up and down) are in our vision. We can not get his/her body out of our vision by trying to focus our eyes somewhere else. It is how our eyes work.
Lets imagine another example. A person is watching tv in his room with interest. His eyes would be really focused on tv screen. now if a lizard comes in his room and crawls on wall he will be able to notice it although it is still many feet away from tv screen .
So when people (even not suffering from OCD) face a person his/her crotch or chest is in their vision. They just keep their focus where it should be and dont become anxious. Whereas people with OCD staring become panicked and try their best to get other person's private parts out of their vision which is not possible. In fact it backfires . Their vision diverts again and again to other person's private parts. Other person is able to notice their sight moving to and fro between his face and privates. He also notices nervousness in their eyes as committing something bad. That person becomes uncomfortable and unhappy. At this point people suffering from OCD can see his facial expressions and becomes more anxious. In this way this vicious cycle goes on and on.
As OCD progresses the sufferer becomes conscious of this all and he tries to avoid seeing privates of any people in his surroundings. No doubt it is a futile effort and backfires.
Now question is that what is way out of this vicious cycle for an OCDer with staring problem?
First of all he needs to understand that it is not possible to restrict our sight to a small region. Objects away from our main focus will still be in our view like chest or crotch maybe.
I tried myself and advised others to just focus on whole face of other person while conversing with him/her. Her chest or his crotch can be in my view but i will not panic and keep calm. OCD sufferer should try to focus on whole face of other person not on a single point like center of eyes or nose. Focusing on whole face along with contours is much natural and worked best for me.
In case an OCDer is in a different situation like attending a lecture and lecturer writing on board. He has to keep his sight focused where it should be, like on writing on the board in this case. Lecturer's chest or crotch may come in his vision but he has to keep calm and not worry about it.
One key factor that helps this vicious cycle to continue is the fear that other person will observe me staring at his privates and can be angry. Its my personal experience that if one can learn not to panic and keep eyes focused to his face regardless of his privates being in view other person do not notice anything abnormal. As a result of such an encounter OCDer becomes relieved as he did not see any discomfort on other person's face.In this way his staring problem will reduce more and more and he will be able to be like normal people as this fear will be out of his mind and subconscious.
There may be some point in my writing that need more elaboration . If you find some ambiguities or have some more questions about this method let me know.

I have great sympathy with OCDers with staring problem as it is perhaps most embarrassing type of OCD and because i have been in this hell for many years. If some OCDer need to talk to me about this method i can have video or audio chat with him online .

Hi @Raheel,

Thanks for your post, you very clearly described the difficulties that some people with OCD face in regards to vision.

I just need to chime in here, and let you know that this is an anonymous forums, which means that any information that can reveal your identity is restricted. This means that private messaging or video chat or sharing details to video chat cannot be published.

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi Raheel
The OCD peripheral vision thing is pretty much an automated almost magnet like process with my eyes. This information could hopefully helpful to younger people with the condition .
Although no persons OCD is exactly alike , coexisting conditions can also make some approaches difficult when trying to overcome rather then accepting them in some way .My ocd continues to have a major impact on my daily life but I don't allow myself to indulge in self pity or self hatred as this is letting the OCD win .
That's just for me personally ,as having recently turned 45 I have tried many methods and I am actually taking part in a different ( in house ) treatment for chronic ( treatment resistant ) OCD soon and if it is beneficial I will be sure to let everyone know .
With regards to the original post, the benefits of the stimulant mentioned unfortunately have seemed to have worn out . ( for me )
Although again as mentioned before , everyones OCD is slightly different and there are positive stories out there where some treatments ( ie CBT or exposure therapy along with appropriate meds ) have helped very much .

Please everyone ,try and stay positive . Know there are others out there like you

All the very best

Hi Tyler. Ocd peripheral vision used to be automatic with my eyes too. It is because this fear is always at the back of our mind. Ocd staring sufferer fear that he will look inappropiaately others and he cant help this. But once you are able to control it fear is no more there in mind and its no more automated then after few days.

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Please give me the name of that supplement! I have had this problem for so long, and my fear is that I could accidentally get fired for "sexual harassment."

I can't describe the terrible fear that goes along with this neuro-chemical disorder. I am always afraid that it will be wrongly interpreted as sexual deviance.

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Some things work better than others and vary from person to person .
The initial benefits of the stimulant have seemed to lessened.
But as I say different medications may help some and not others .
Please know that there are others out there like yourself . Try not to be hard on yourself , it is a difficult condition to deal with but new approaches, medications and treatments are always happening
Please find a good doctor to talk your through things . Good luck , stay strong mate .
I know exactly how hard it is .
All the best and take care .

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi there
Thanks for the post.
You are not alone. It is a very difficult form of OCD to talk about for some and there are many people out there suffering quietly as a result
This is the polar opposite of sexual obsession, it is an over sensitivity and a fear of being judged as having a sexual, weird or creepy manner (hopefully that makes sense) that keeps the OCD going round and round.
Stay strong mate, you are still young. Please give CBT a go if you can and address your OCD while it is relatively fresh. It's important to do this so as to lessen its potential to impact your life later on.
New treatment and medications are always happening , don't give up and know that there are many others in a similar situation.
