Your best possible attitude

Your best possible attitude

Those new to this wonderful forum might not know my background- briefly-

Likely my mother has BPD is still in denial and that created many obstacles in my and my 2 siblings lives. Armed with impulsivity as a young man and depression but not realising any mental illness present until 45yo (now 62) when diagnosed with ADHD and bipolar1. This was incorrect and I perservered for 6 years on various meds that of course devastated my daily life.

I decided in 2009 to change tack and get a second opinion. Diagnosis? Bipolar 2, dysthymia and depression. Over the years I've realised this is the right diagnosis. The dysthymia was apparently from a childhood event when my brother nearly drowned. So the picture was complete in 2009 then a change of meds what else was left to do?...well plenty.

Firstly, since then, some 9 years ago meds needed to be fine tuned as sometimes they were too strong and other times too mild. Mood swings that could be due to life's events were mistaken for moods from bipolar, meaning reverting back to the original dosage...you can see it can be complex!. Getting the "chemistry" (sic) right and knowing myself more resulted in a much more stable lifestyle.

But by far my greatest two assets were my carer, my wife of 7 years and a determined attitude. Enduring this roller coaster requires an acceptance of a life of 4 steps back and 5 steps forward. During the steps back it was hard to accept that my depression will subside or my mania will wane. Faith is so important and I'd write notes for myself like "I am feeling great" and pin it on my shed wall, to read when depressed.

Attitude, will be your saviour through the tough times. Now at 2018 at 62yo I'm feeling better than at anytime in my life.

What can you do to boost your hopes and attitude?

- attend motivation lectures

- read books on positive attitudes

- read success stories on using meds

- accept likelihood of lifelong medication

- work close with your GP

- dont be afraid to get second opinions

- learn to accept your limitations socially, employment and career. Its not your fault but make adjustments to suit you

- learn to rest and relaxation, take classes

- work with your carer not against him/her

- finally...never ever ever give up. Program yourself. Its worth it for you and your family

WK.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and what has helped for you @Whiteknight it sounds like you have gone through some incredibly tough times and found ways of getting through, with a lot of hard work.

I hope you are feeling better after your sickness, what things are you doing now that you are finding helpful?

Hi @Former-Member

My worst enemy is my own under rating of my mental issues. In another sense I'm functioning ok most of the time under mood stabilisers and small amount of AD's. I've recovered from the Gastro, two bouts, not nice.

Patience isnt around my life and we are trying to sell up and build another home 4 hours away. Country real estate is much slower however so just have to wait, could be a couple of years. But we have purchased seedlings and will spruce the place up for spring.

I know I have insight a lot in my symptoms. That doesnt mean I have a lesser illness. and that's the problem. I tend to ignore the depression coming then it hits harder especially triggers from other people in my life.

I think I'll get bouyed after the sale. 🙂
