Confused

Confused

I need some advice. After struggling with my anxiety I finally made the decision to speak to my Dr about seeing a new psychologist. I struggled with this as I know the Dr through my job and didn't want to feel judged. I have an apt with psychologist tomorrow and I'm freaking out. How do I talk to someone who I've never met? I generally freak our when talking to males so this kind of worries me I recentky tried self harming but freaked myself out so don't know if it's something to bring up in my first apt as I don't want to b giving the wrong impression of who I am.

Re: Confused

ok @Jessten
well what do you think about attending another appointment? do you think you want to continue with him or would like to try someone else?

to me from what youve said, it doesnt sound like he was listening to you and was brushing off your concerns and perhaps (going off your reactions- but correct me if im wrong) he mightnt be the one for you to work with if you already feeling judged

Re: Confused

@Jessten I have dealt with situations like this b4, this had led be to more proactive about who my mental health care professionals are. When I go to see a new practioner of any kind I now treat the first appointment as an interview....of them, I am interviewing them to assertain whether I deem them fit to help me with my issues.

Another cold hard fact to bare in mind is, that the mental health care providers have become very cynical due to various reasons. This often leads to bizarre first appointments as they try to draw certain responses from people, the problem with that is we dont all fit into a neat little box.....otherwise we wouldnt be there in the first place. I have this problem constantly as a BPD sufferer, most providers r not equipped to deal with personality disorders or simply do not understand them. Along with a complete failure to understand that BPD can present itself in many different ways, and most just assume I am a manipulative person by nature so I MUST be trying to manipulate them. I never have anything I say taken on face value, always a follow up question, then a leading question. Triggers me out 😣

Re: Confused

Hello @Jessten

I think that the statements your psych made in your session are quite idiosyncratic ... not that professional, he might be a bit weird and not know it.

At the beginning of approaching mh workers I accepted everything they delivered. One fellow wanted to get me to use a baseball bat to get my anger out, but now I think that was for his satisfaction more than mine. I am older and agree with @show_me_gray interview approach.

That does not make it easier for you, but having some common values and beliefs is fair before you reveal parts of your soul to a person. Its not enough that they are professional. To be therapeutic they also have to be a good match.

Take Care

Re: Confused

Hello @Appleblossom. I thought he was unprofessional but listened to what he said.

I've been unwell this wk and been stuck at home which has been challenging as I just want to be at work.

One thing I have realised tho is no matter how frustrating it is being stuck here I have absolutely no feeling like I want to see him again.

I'm unsure I want to talk to someone as I feel as tho they are criticising the way I live even tho at some times I feel I just need help and am the one who asks for it.

Re: Confused

@Jessten I am doubtful about some psychologists. I dont believe the training is thorough enough to prepare them for all the circumstances that people need help with. I have had quite a few pass judgement on me, often out of the blue. I have faced a lot and really needed counselling. It has taken a long time to feel a sense of trust with my current mh workers, but I fell I have good people atm. It is their job to build trust. You ought not feel worse about needing to see someone than we all do when we decide that it is necessary.

Lately I am learning to use my gut instinct about people. For example I did not like young people after a few poor encounters, but now have a lovely young lady as a Community Rehabilitation Worker. She has put the effort in to understand me, and I sometimes challenge her, but we have mutual respect.

Mutual Respect is important. Dont put them on too high a pedestal. Dont go back to that guy, but give them a chance to prove themselves.
