I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

I know that feeling so well. The darkness gets darker and stronger and louder. It's so hard to reign my distress back in once this is happening.

I am finding that I am more able to 'sit with' fear of a night by talking it out with others - it doesn't just help me 'control' my fear but allows me to see whether that fear is of something real or imagined.

I think so @utopia. Anxiety (like all the big feelings probably) can do some pretty full on things! Its interesting to see and think about how different emotions are experienced within the body.

If you sit with your emotion/s - that's a scary thought right there - I worry that it will consume me. My thoughts just take over.

My distress normally comes out as SH or SI. My feelings are normally sadness, anger and probably the biggest one is guilt. My distress tolerance seems to get higher and higher until something "breaks".

I know distress tolerance is learnt in DBT which I am starting soon so am hoping that helps. I seem to have no control over my emotions or what I do to manage them.

I find that sometimes the 'lizard brain' is reacting to the person/situation before I can even think or emote.

My body reacts to a threat (whether real or imagined it doesnt matter, bc my body is reacting as though it is)

I've been reading Brene Brown's 'Daring Greatly' and Dr Van Der Kolk's 'The Body Keeps the Score' and really want to get into trauma informed therapy and yoga, i think those things will help with the kind of distress tolerance and resilience I need. ACT has been a help post distress, but during, I just cant, its too strong.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Distress Tolerance // Tues 17 July, 7pm AEDT

A psychologist once told me that instead of viewing anxiety as concern or worry, to view it as excited about a situation that may be occurring. Whilst I understand that re-framing how you view the somatic symptoms of anxiety may be beneficial in the long run, the thoughts and worry I have in my head make it very difficult for me to view anxiety as anything but worrying about the situation and wanting to run away from it.

Yes, being able to express my fears to someone can help me a lot.

Also journal writing, to express my feelings.

& Breathing meditation, being mindful of my breathing - helps me to sit with the intense distress feelings, a bit better.

I have a gemstone that represents strength that I wear as a necklace and I rub it with my fingers when I'm distressed at work. It's very sensory which I find distracting and calming.
