I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Distress Tolerance // Tues 17 July, 7pm AEDT

Self soothing for me often means wrapping myself in my blanket, with a cat (if I can get my hands on one or something to cuddle with if not) and sitting in my beanbag. Finding anything soft, fluffy and warm. Then self-talk. Things like "this will pass, this can't last forever, you'll settle down eventually, you can do this" etc.

Trying to be more kind to myself is something I'd like to work on to improve my distress.

I am beginning to do a pros and cons list to determine when situations that cause me most distress are worth doing or not

I have a weighted blanket I use. It was the best thing I have ever brought. I use crafting, watch a lot of a tv series, talk on here, play with my dog, use my coping box

You are so right @Zoe7 I know from some of my lengthy conversations with forum members recently, it has helped me to feel less alone with the feelings I have, and by talking out and sharing of those feelings and emotions help to decrease my distress immensely.

When I was in a less depressed state - I used to find going up to my mountain and meditating really helped clear my head. I'd listen to the birds, the wind in the trees. Feel the sun or wind on my skin. Smell the Eucalyptus. Sense the ancestors close by.

It brought a real sense of peace and calm and "i'm alright".

I'd leave the mountain feeling 'lighter', rested, and dare I say it - Happy

That's exactly how I feel. It stops the immediate distress but builds up a whole lot of negative 'why can't I be heard' in my head.
