Topic Tuesday // Talking to your parents about your mental health // Tues. 5 June 7pm AEST

Topic Tuesday // Talking to your parents about your mental health // Tues. 5 June 7pm AEST

It can be really challenging talking to your parents about your mental health. How will they react? What exactly should I tell them? Will I worry them too much? How do I bring up the topic?

For this Topic Tuesday we will be joined by Jessie, a SANE Young Ambassador & part of batyr's Being Herd program, who will share her own experiences and Gina from ReachOut.com , an organisation that supports young people and parents.

Whether you're already talking to your parents about your mental health or are just thinking about it - join us at 7pm AEST to get tips, strategies and tell us a bit about your own situation.

I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?
Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.
The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.
How do I get involved?
Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.
Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.
If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

@JessieB

the other one I find useful to talk to a counsellor is 1800RESPECT. Find them useful in talking things through

All awesome suggestions thanks everyone for these.

The other one I would mention too is depending on what state you're in, to look up your local Family Referral Centre , or Family and Child Connect - they usually have a great idea of all the local services and will help you to navigate it, making sure as well that you know about all the free services provided in the area.

The most important thing is to find someone, or a few people, that you connect with, and you feel can assist you in your recovery.

This has been such an insightful, and interesting conversation - thank you to everyone who has shared their personal experiences and their tips and advice around this topic.

It is by no means easy to open up about mental health, and even by having these conversations online, we are slowly breaking down some of that stigma.

@JessieB it has been so amazing to hear your story, thank you for sharing.

So that's it for tonight - however, if you want to continue the discussion, you're welcome to either

1) continue the discussion in another thread - particularly if you want to get support about a specific experience

2) keep posting here - we will keep the thread open over night

A HHUUUGGGEEE thank you to @JessieB & @Gina-Bell for generously sharing your time, expertise and experience tonight - we so appreciate it!

Finally - a big thank you to all of you who have asked and answered questions.

I see a few new people tonight - so a big welcome to you! And I also see some old-schoolers - so lovely to see all your familiar 'faces'.
