That time of night

That time of night

Long term mental health issues and having a rough time of it lately. It's that time of night, between midnight and morning where everyone I know is asleep. Always a tough time for me, living alone and having no one to talk to - tonight though is a bit harder than usual. Anxiety, depression, sadness, loneliness - they all seem more opressively present tonight which is what has prompted me to go searching online for help or, at the very least, somewhere to just get some thoughts out.

I have a cat who is not well at the moment and chances are that is what has triggered this. I am well aware that my mental health problems have really shrunk my world and as a result this magnifies the effects of changes that will inevitably occur. I seem to be losing, more and more, the ability to deal with stress at any level. Loss and feeling alone in it all is certainly the hardest part.

anyways, not sure what I was hoping to achieve with this. Never been on one of these forums before. I was tempted to call a hotline but the thought of talking is causing additional stress so I thought maybe if I can just write something down in a public space it might ease my mind to make it a bit more bearable. y' know, make me feel like I am actually interacting with the world and doing/achieving something.

it is 3am here in Perth so I still have a ways to go. Still a really rough night, still feeling anxious, lonely and exhausted but I do feel a tiny bit better for writing something. Definitely better than doing nothing.

on the odd chance that anyone reads this - firstly, I hope it made some sense. Secondly, I hope your night is going ok and that you have the chance for some peacefull, restful sleep

🙂

No worries, how are you feeling now?

Still not great. Just doing what I normally do and riding it out. Now that the sun is up a long walk may be on the cards

I have to say I am surprised that they don't talk about this sort of thing more within the mental health system. I have been in it for quite a few years and at no point did someone mention an online community. Lifeline was mentioned but referred to in a 'last resort' kind've way. Beyond blue was also mentioned but not in a community sense. My various psychologists have always gone on about developing support networks n' such but that is as far as their involvement has gone. I just happened to cross this forum by luck because desperation was pushing me to look everywhere and anywhere.

glad I did because it has opened up some hopeful possibilities for dealing with some of my worse periods

by the way, I've not seen anything to suggest you are a drama queen - I don't know you but you've been nothing but nice and helpful - certainly not caused me any extra anxiety. Very welcoming in fact and much appreciated

No worries. Unfortunately, since the mental health system does more harm than good, you have to sift through what they tell you for the useful bits. i am old and have figured all this out now so am trying to let people know what i have found to be the 'useful' stuff. people with mental illnesses typically aren't in touch with their feelings and often can't figure out why they're feeling bad. Telling people with mental illnesses to call Lifeline as a 'last resort' - i dunno if i'm comfortable with that - people with mental illesses often get pushed a lot often and don't know what skils they need to cope. i actually call lifeline and different support workers when i feel like it because i got in such bad shape at one point that i struggled ot even want to connect with anyone and this was very bad for me. i've figured most ot it out now and if i don't have a very happy life it's because i haven't been obedient enough to god. god does not send all suffering but he does punish us and 'refine us through fire', and prayer works (in fact, it's scientifically proven to work, although one doesn't have to back god up with science). There's a way through, but the mental health service isn't very useful at helping one find it - they only offer the occasional pearl of wisdom. i'm nearly 50 and have a good life now but i've had to figure it out for myself. feel free to refer to me if/when you want or if there is any useful information i can give 🙂

Are you ok? Always keep connected, with either us or Lifeline (13 11 14) or whoever you want, (including God of course) while you get through. Better days are always ahead. God bless.

I am still here and ok. Well, relatively anyways. It has been a very long night.

Thanks for checking too.

Will definitely continue to visit and use this forum. Even just this small amount of positive interaction has been a big deal for me.

Was unexpected but definitely welcome

You have most certainly helped.

Hi @Tomsk

Welcome to the forums! I'm sorry you've had such a bad night its hard. I agree feeling alone is the hardest part. I have used the lifeline online chat before, as I hate talking on the phone or in person. And its been helpful some of the time, eases the pressure a bit. Though some people have been morehelpful than others. I really hope you cat is ok, i love my furbabies. its really hard when something is wrong with them. Hope you are able to get some rest today.

I'm not sure I agree with @Terry (respectfully :D) that the mental heath system causes harm universally (i do know that there are lots of times that it fails people though.. same with schools failing some children, health care failing in many ways in general) but i have had a gernally good experience with the 'system' and care that i have recieved before and after being hospitalised with mental illness. My 'team' of psychiatrist, social worker, support worker, psychologist and GP have all worked together to help me over the last year and though at times i've felt a bit overwhelmed and freaked out with things, in retrospect, the overall process has helped to keep me from going back to hospital or deterioating that far again. I'm even hoping to go back to work this year!

No worries. Tomsk. My recommendation is to get on the phone to lifeline to talk your stuff out and find some solutions (be a little careful about confidentiality). Or keep online here, or perhaps use some of the other techniques i mentioned if you like. i'm not online all the time, of course, but other people at this forum will also try to help you. Of course, we might get it wrong. Lifeline is always there for you (13 11 14) and they are usually good and helpful. God bless and keep findings ways through 🙂
