My head is a mess 3.0

My head is a mess 3.0

Thanks 'SANE'.. That took forever to get out.. Got to love censorship.. Third time lucky?

Long term mental health suffer after advice.

Previously been diagnosed with OCD, Depression & Anxiety. I have also been evaluated for bipolar & psycosis (psyc concluded everything was anxiety related)

Well I've been medicated for anxiety for almist 4 years now & in councilling for 12 months. Nothing helps long term. it always comes back worse then before.

GP is currently investigating ADHD & PTSD (I feel ADHD fits better then anything before. I'm not sure about PTSD, But after an 8 year abusive relationship with a psycotic narc, I wouldn't be suprised)

Psyc wants to trial me on stimulants for ADHD (most anxiety issues are related to inattentiveness, impulsivity, which effect my work, study & social interactions)

I however am worried the stimulants will worsen the anxiety.

Is the anxiety likely to get worse while adjusting to stimulants? Am I likely to need fast acting relaxants to avoid panic attacks?

I'm so worried about making the condition worse before it gets better.. especially since GPs has made it very clear I will need to abstain from all other crutches..

I can't just crawl under a rock while we try more meds & more therepy. I'm a single mum with young children. I need to be able to function.

After any advice from people with comorbid anxiety disorders. TIA

Hi @brockovich86,

I'm glad you persisted with writing your post despite the frustration.

It must be difficult not having something that helps with your symptoms, particularly when you are trying to meet the demands of raising a young family. Your treating team sound thorough, which is good. Hopefully their current investigation into ADHD and PTSD will give you some answers and possible new alternatives to treatment, which may explain why nothing else has be entirely succussful so far.

I cant answer your questions about the effect the stimulants will have on your anxiety, they are possibily best answered by your psychiatrist, as different people react to medication in different ways, as I'm sure you may already be aware. I can understand your concern making the condition worse before it gets better, when you are raising young children on your own. I'm wondering, as you mentioned nothing works in the long-term, if you have anything to be helpful in the short-term to manage anxiety?

Look forward to talking to you soon.

Hi @Former-Member thank you for taking the time to reply.

I guess I'm worried about the stimulate effect as I don't like the effect coffee has on me.. however I have heard that's because coffee has a peak & crash where ADHD meds can be long release/sustained attention if that makes sense.

I'm in councilling atm helping to sort through the aftermath of an abusive relationship. I have also been on anxiety medication (nothing fast acting) for 4 years.

I have previously been perscribed fast acting anxiety medication but due to being highly addictive, I worry about taking them & only do so when I am consumed & paralized by the anxiety if that makes sense?

I was doing well today until ex set me off. Once its been triggered I need the children to play outside so I have quite but it can take hours (& quite a few drinks) to calm down again.

This will be the first time I see a psyciatrist.

No problem at all @brockovich86

Yes that makes perfect sense, perhaps as the stimulant medication is slow release your body may react differently to it? If you do decide to take the medication you can give any feedback to the psychiatrist and they may be able to suggest something for anxiety.

I hope the counselling has been beneficial for you, its not easy talking about abusive relationships, but great that you have been making the time to process everything in the aftermath of the relationship.

Yes that does make sense, and if that works for you then thats great. Have you been given any strategies to help you manage anxiety in your counselling sessions?

Good on you for making an appointment with a psychiatrist! I hope all goes well

Hi,

ahhh yes, its sometimes suprising what words arent allowed!! Glad you got your message though 😄

Welcome to the forums, glad you've posted here. I was also in an abusive relationship and have ptsd and depression. I take antidepressents and need help with sleeping, and while i know it helps me, i hate it as well because of the side effects i get, etc. I can't answer your questions about the stimulants either, but i can empathise with your fear about the effects you'll have and how long it'll take to settle. At least you have some experience with medications from taking your other meds.

I've also had lots of counselling with a psychologist which has helped, most of the time though i dont think its about finding a cure but finding a way to manage alot of the symptoms the best way we can... with medications and coping strategies. I've started a new crochet project and been doing that for a little while each day as 'me time', doing musle relaxation daily, and my breathing exercises as often as i can remember to. It all helps a bit. Do you have any strategies that help you?

Re: My head is a mess 3.0

Thank you. This forum has been more useful then therepy so far. I don't find I can talk about it anymore. I can't watch the news as I get flash backs. I'm only starting to admit the really horrible things to people. it's taking time to gain strength & its an ongoing process.

I feel like I have a bit of a plan now to move forward with GP support.

That sounds good, having a plan of action always helps to give me a bit of a feeling of control back. I'm at the planning all my days out stage at the moment just keeping myself on track with things and not thinking too far ahead or behind.
