Partner has recently been diagnosed

Partner has recently been diagnosed

My partner of 19 yrs has recently been diagnosed with schizophrenia. In the spirit of full disclosure, we were smoking heroin for 13 yrs & have now been clean for 6 yrs now. He is now 39 & I'm 35. I remember on a few occasions, he would tell me he saw something & I chalked it down to him perhaps seeing those thing whilst having a nap. In recent times, things had gotten worse & things had reached the point where he couldn't hide his symptoms from me anymore.
Eventually, I called my local hospitals psychiatric triage number & that was 8 mths ago. Since then, he has been put on antipsychotics & antidepressants (for his ocd). The medication has helped but they haven't found the right mix & want him to change to a different medication.
I know that eventually he will be alright but I'm now having concerns about our children. I don't know much about why schizophrenia occurs & if it is hereditary. And if so, what would I need to do? Thanks & sorry about the super long msg.

Hi @Jennifer, welcome to the Forums. I'm glad you found us. I hope you don't mind but I moved your post to somewhere that might be more visible to other members.

It sounds like you've been through some tough times. Medication changes are difficut but hopefully your partner will emerge from the process feeling better and more able to manage. You're clearly concerned for your children. I understand that there can be a hereditary element to schizophrenia, as with many illnessnes, but there also needs to be environmental factors to trigger it. In your partner's case it may have been his drug usage.

For your children you could perhaps do some research around the environmental triggers, perhaps ask your partners treatment team. But it's important to remember that we can only control so much when it comes to our children's lives. You can only do your best, support them no matter what, and hope they make good choices as they get older.

How old are your children now?

Hi @Jennifer,

Just checking in to see how you doing.

As Suzanne said earlier you could talk to your partner's treatment team about what you tell your children.

Of course a lot depends on how old they are. And rmember you can only do your best, support them no matter what, and hope they make good choices as they get older. But most importantly take care of yourself!

regards

Hi @Jennifer

Just wanted to check in to see how you're doing.

I've heard of an organisation called COPMI (Children of parents of mentala illness) - it might be worth checking them out.

Hope you're travelling well.
