I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

What are or have been some ways or tools you have tried to manage side effects in your day to day lives? -- @Former-Member, for us is to find the right balance

like try to finish ealy which helps a lot , Like no work after 4pm

no work before 8am

having 1 or 2 hours off at lunch time

to have weekends off , have a day of sleep or doing nothing or what we like to do

some of the side effects we can not change -- or seems like me can`t change

Pee problem, go often to the loo, wear pads and pack some back up clothes, I have a pack in my car.

Suicidal thoughts, have a suicide prevention plan as update it regularly.

Fuzzy thoughts, take time out, have a nap when I get confused.

Weight gain, trying to make better choices and exercise a little bit.

All in all there are side effects, with every medication. I have stomach meds for stomach upset, meds for acid reflux, meds for high cholesterol due to weight gain, meds for nausea.

Overall I’m lucky with side effects, I just kind of live with them and remember how shot life is without the meds.

I’ve also gone off meds and suffered severe withdrawals, but unfortunately that’s part of the ‘game’, I can only recommend to everyone to do this under full supervision of a psychiatrist, the side effects during withdrawal were the worst, but then I knew it would pass eventually

Yes @Struggles meds are only part of the equation, they help reduce symptoms to enable a patient to learn better coping mechanisms or to enable a patient to function better. Sleep, exercise and psychological therapies have also been shown to improve quality of life.

Eating healthy and lots of self care is great - high priority that self care and self love times @Liss23

@Jojo2 good point on making sure you take the right meds. There are some really useful apps that can help to track how you are going with your meds and remind you when to take them.

Sometimes the timing of when we take our meds can make a big difference and tracking this can sometimes help to notice that. If a med makes you sleepy for instance it may be good to take it at night (check with your GP/MH professional)

@Former-Member I also find that for me it’s easier to ‘live’ with side effects and not research or discuss them. The serious ones will be discussed from the psych side, everything else for me is just making me nervous, so I keep away from it.

That's the mistake I made I made last week @Former-Member. That's why I'm coming off of kne ok f them. But now now I'm starting a bit more clearer in the head. I made the mistake of taking it at the wrong time. And it got me in a lot of trouble

@Former-Member supplements can sometimes be a good natural helper to balance out or combat some of these side effects.

@Former-Member great that you are so on top of your side effects and what you need to do for them

@Ambinorm1 - you made a interesting comment as well, that your body does adapt to the medications in time and your body builds a tolerance. This is quite true. Although as we have seen shared tonight, some side effects seem to be ongoing for some - side effects should hopefully not last forever. The idea being that with time (a few weeks/a month or two) your body can adapt. Its been recalibrating to the new chemical in its body and can hopefully after a time stabilise again. If you are feeling like you are having persistant side effects ongoing that are causing you great issues - then it is so important to reach out to your GP/MH professional to get some help with this

@Struggles having a holistic approach is a good perspective too, the medication is always going to be in partnership with working all other areas of recovery

Yes @Liss23 - I don't know where I'd be without my pup. The 6 months last year between dogs was a very very lonely time.

My pup annoys me at times, she's demanding, but I love her so very much and the comfort she gives me is absolutely priceless.
