Topic Tuesday // Feeling anxious when away from your loved one // Tues. 24 Apr. 7pm - 9pm AEST

It's not uncommon to worry about a loved one, but it becomes a problem if it impacts our day to day life.

Does anxiety spike when you have to leave your loved one to go to work each day?

Have you stopped going out with friends because you're worried about leaving your loved one at home?

While the desire to stay at home and keep an eye on a loved one may help you control your anxiety in the short term, allowing it to stop you doing things that help your own mental health can be damaging in the long run.

During this Topic Tuesday we'll open the floor to hear how worry and anxiety about your loved one has impacted your life and share techniques and strategies so you don't compromise your own mental health.

I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

That's a really good idea @Determined That is probably a common concern for all carers here!
Do you have a safety plan with your partner, so she has someone else to call if she can't get through to you or is she unlikely to reach out elsewhere?

I use facebook as a way of check in. My daughter lives 2 hours away so this is one way i can check on her. She will not use facebook if she is unwell

I am also fortunate that uni and work (I work at the uni) are most understanding that if necessary I can down tools and run home if necessary. Not having to worry about that impact makes such a decision much less stressful, I do still find it hard though as I want to be seen as reliable.

@NikNik --- you wrote ---You can cater these to what works for you. Some people use a similar 1-3 scale.

I have been starting this in our daily life , in the morning I have started to ask mr shaz how he feels and then I am finding to work out what kind of day , how much work and rest needed

1 – All good / okay

2 – Not great, but working on it and will be okay

3 – Not doing okay, need support

Welcome @Jodieanne
That's a great tip - especially for those not living with their loved one.
So it seems like it's not only what they are telling you - but lack of communication that is an indication for you @Jodieanne

There are people she can contact @NikNik , her mum, my mum, close friend or church pastor but she never has, usually just implodes when she cant get me. (Based on fear of rejection and abandonment)

There was one ocasion recently where she actually drove out to the uni to see me because I had my phone off.
