Getting in touch with your feelings and their causes

Getting in touch with your feelings and their causes

I have been diagnosed with BPD 2 years ago, and for a short while I followed therapy and took some medication as well. Unfortunately I stopped with therapy when my psychologist announced that she is leaving that company to work somewhere else, and since then I am living somewhere between ignoring and accepting my diagnosis. Now I am turning to you for help because there is a particular issue that causes me quite some issues and I was wondering if maybe someone with more experience has some suggestions for me.

For days I have been feeling really sad, occasionally feeling like I will start crying, but I can’t pinpoint the reason for my sadness. This happens very often and there is always something behind it that I realize in a couple of days. After the realization I can deal with the issue and find solutions (sometimes not right away, but always eventually) which will make my bad mood disappear.
I was wondering if people with BPD often experience this sort of problem? Is there a technique that works for you to find the cause of your negative feelings?

Another thing that I have recently experienced and rather startled me was not being in touch with my emotions at all. My whole February I spent in sort of a bubble, feeling happy, balanced, stress free when my mum visited me (she lives far away from me and we don’t meet often in person, but talk on the phone dry day) and she asked me what’s wrong, why am I sad. I told her that I have no idea what she means, I am perfectly happy. She said that she didn’t notice it on the phone but now when she sees me in person, she can feel that I am not okay. The same night my husband told me during an argument, that I am always unhappy lately. I felt angry with them both then but they got in my head and within 2 days I have found the reason and realized that in fact I was feeling really sad indeed. It scares me how much I was detached from my own emotion. It was either never happened before or maybe it just went unnoticed by me as no one said anything.
Can you help me by sharing your similar experiences and telling how you dealt with the situation?
Seeing that I am not alone is sometimes enough to feel better about myself.

Thank you all and I am sorry for the long, rambling post. I rarely talk about these things and it’s hard to put it into writing.

Hi @Catty92,

i haven’t experienced things the same way as you exactly but have something kind of similar. I sometimes have this thought/voice in my head that feels like déjà vu. It’s like a subconscious thing and I find myself saying 'I just hurt' even though I may not be feeling like it. It happens randomly and I find myself arguing with it that I don’t really hurt. I know it happens more often before a big breakdown for me. It’s a bit the same in that I can’t work out why it happens.

Im also a big one for putting my head in the sand.

I did a lot of work with a psychologist a few years ago around knowing and understanding my emotions....I was clueless then. I’m slowly getting better but still fall into lots of traps with emotions and BPD.

Best wishes 💜😊

Re: Getting in touch with your feelings and their causes

Hi @Catty92

I have had similar experiences in the past - often hurts, worries etc can be pushed into the subconscious. We can feel uneasy, sad or anxious and not always immediately know why. Then it can make its way to the subconscious to be dealt with. The time this happens can vary for many. If the trauma was great it can take years to surface as the we keep pushing it away as the pain can be overwhelming.

If we face the issue we do feel better, and the sooner the better. If we feel we can't can't handle the emotional pain, grief, worry, low self worth or whatever is the problem and wanting to escape from it - then at times we can act self destructively (whether that be some type of reckless activity, self harm, drinking and substance abuse, letting it stop us from our goals and living to the fullest etc). The latter not be faced and worked through will push the emotions back down to subconscious level where it will grow. The anxiety/depression etc continues.

So what you are doing by facing and dealing with your issues that makes you sad is a good thing. Dealing with each as it arises. There will be periods in life where we feel unhappy, but as long as we deal with it productively we will grow stronger and mature. That's been my experience. It's those issues I feel "I can't face" or accept and keep questioning the what ifs, is when my anxiety/depression continues and I struggle.

Hi @Catty92. I think our mother must be twins!

I am totally disconnected from my feelings, but have lived this way since I was 4 years old! For me, it’s simply how I’ve survived. I am getting better though.
