Project to raise awareness of depression

Project to raise awareness of depression

Hello! I have a project trying to reach and support people with depression but the trouble is how do I actually reach anyone? Forums are anonymous so I can’t promote what I’m doing. Does anyone have any ideas? Thankyou!

@KU777

Hi, a project on depression sounds good. Could you maybe set up a website, Facebook page or social media pages and share the link on here and other support groups (e.g. beyond blue, lifeline etc)?

Re: Project to raise awareness of depression

hello @KU777

It is reassuring for those of us on these forums that people are still wanting to learn more about such a widespread..in depth subject with so many variables...

there are many on here who have lived experience and studied also...

You may have already done this ...the front page of the website...click on mental health & illness at the top of this page leads you to much information...

I do understand that you want to reach out to people first hand which is caring....

I think that the first step to take would be ring sane helpline..ph no 1800187263 found in right hand top corner of this page...

ask the questions there...

I am sure that there are measures in place for this type of research..

wishing you all the best....thanking you for being a caring person wanting to help bring about change..

good luck

Hi @KU777. Another member, @MoonGal, is in the process of setting up a website under a pseudonym, which she will be able to share on the forum because it doesn't lead back to her personally under her real name. That's an option for a blog or website that you would like to share here. Best wishes with your project!

Re: Project to raise awareness of depression

Hi @KU777

Members have offered some great solutions in there. I hope you find them helpful.

While you're right, the Forums are anonymous, we are also very careful as to what type of research is advertised here in the Forums. In the guidelines we ask members:

If you are an individual or organisation conducting research, please contact team@saneforums.org with an overview of your research project. Please do not post advertisements or requests for participants without the approval of SANE Australia.

As @Former-Member said, it's reassuring that people are still wanting to learn more about this subject.

Best wishes with the research.

Let us know if we can be of any assistence.

Take care

Re: Project to raise awareness of depression

@KU777, What a wonderful project, depression affects so many people throughout their lives and it is one area of mental ill health that has a broad coverage.

The project @Mazarita mentioned is a website I am compiling but it is mainly a portal for self-publishing my writing, commentary, opinion and art, with a view to when I also self-publish a book - all under a pseudonym.

Facebook is a good place to start a group - there are a few sites I follow already that have good info and shared lived experience - one is

The Mighty | We face disability, disease and mental illness together

https://themighty.com/

and other I came across yesterday and signed up for their newsletter is

Mental Movement (UK)
https://www.mentalmovement.co.uk/

I have been through the wringer over the past week as I consider all my options about being self-identifying - being out as a woman living with a laundry list of mental illnesses, whether I would be identifiable via my stories, whether that matters to me etc. (that has consequences for whether I can share here or not). Going public is a big step particularly during times when we might be unwell. But - I arrived at a comfortable place for myself in that process.

I have found sharing, talking, chipping in HERE on SANE forums to have been such a great place and community, being able to help and educate too - for people who are newbies coming in with a diagnoses etc - so being here with your lived experience is just as important, too and something to consider. The anonymity here is a really important thing, it allows us to share 'safely'.

Anyways - you are conceiving of an intriguing project and I wish you all the best with it!

PS: @KU777 - you can read the long and winding road/process I have been through in decision making here if you are interested.

@Mazarita thanks for the tag above. 🙂

Re: Project to raise awareness of depression

Hi @MoonGal, @KU777, I received an email from @NikNik (community manager) today. She was referring to my comment here on the forum about being able to post links to personal sites if they are under a pseudonym. Apparently, it used to be the policy that this was okay some years ago when I did it. But now the site's policies have become stricter about this, due to the much greater membership, traffic and public awareness of SANE forum now. If you still are hoping to be able to do this, I'd suggest contacting Nik directly on team@saneforums.org. So sorry to be the bearer of this bad news.

Re: Project to raise awareness of depression

@MoonGal, that is a huge relief to hear that. I was terribly worried I'd led you up the garden path with my advice. It is a shame that we won't be able to see your site when it is published, but I think the change in policy is probably a good idea as it happens. Sorry again to you and @KU777 for giving wrong advice on this matter of sharing links to personal sites here.

@NikNik
