Support workers - getting my needs met.

Support workers - getting my needs met.

Hey everyone,

I have this support worker through the Personal Helpers and Mentors Scheme (PHaMS) but we barely see each other. We were supposed to have a meeting last week, but she called and cancelled and promised a phone call (but I didn't receive one). I've left her messages, but she doesn't reply. I don't feel like I am getting my needs met. How can I approach this subject with her or her supervisor without causing conflict? I am pretty passive at heart so to even bring this snafu up is a pretty big deal to me.

Re: Support workers - getting my needs met.

Well, our appointment this morning didn't go ahead. I should have known. I got up early tidied the kitchen and got the animals out of sight (she doesn't like our pets) for nothing. I've texted her again to confirm when our next appointment is, but no response. She is meant to be helping me through the NDIS application process and now I have only 14 days left to submit everything and I haven't even met with her. I am bloody p*ssed off!

That sucks @Queenie,
What does a support worker do may I ask?

Good question @Former-Member... this support worker is supposed to be working with me to achieve my goals which I identified in my first meeting with her. She is also supposed to support me through the arduous process of applying for an NDIS package. So far I am doing everything on my own. I did finally hear from her this afternoon and told her what was going on for me and she actually sounded angry at me. I mean what the heck?!? I've been stressing ever since that I upset her in some way. Next week will be 4 weeks since I saw her last. This is not funny!

But support in what way?
I'm interested, just for myself, but I'm also wondering if you can get another or get help from somewhere else.
How often do you normally see her? Who coordinates her services? Can you go to them and see if you can get a workaround?
I would be so frustrated if I was you and so paranoid. But I doubt you've done anything wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just NDIS that she's avoiding. I know other allied health workers avoiding clients cause they cannot deal with NDIS stuff.

Hi @Queenie doesn't sound to me that she is much of a support worker at all and totally unfair for you. Would you feel comfortable contacting higher up where she works? No doubt she would have some sort of boss and if you could talk to someone like that and explain how long it has been since you saw her and the lack of support she is giving you.

Just a suggestion howver but not fair at all. Hmmm another reason why it is sometimes so hard to reach out for help

Re: Support workers - getting my needs met.

I guess it is supposed to be emotional support @Former-Member. Basically, she is someone with lived experience of MH issues who now works in the community to help others recover and live fulfilling lives. I don't want to get her into trouble but how she acted this afternoon was completely unprofessional in my book. We were supposed to be fortnightly meetings seeing as I am doing ok (despite almost ending up in the hospital a month ago). Next week will be 4 weeks since I last saw her. This is not good enough as I feel like I am already disconnecting from the service without actually receiving much assistance.

@Former-Member I'd feel awful going to her supervisor. However, I'm resigned to the fact that if she does cancel our next appointment. I will be ringing and asking for a supervisor. I just basically don't want to stir the pot. Maybe I'm too passive?

I think I understand, Someone who's been there and knows how the mess of a mental health system works and can provide support.
If she's someone with lived experience..... is there any possibility she's having a crap time of it right now? Can you talk to her boss under the guise of seeing if she is okay?

Re: Support workers - getting my needs met.

It is quite possible @Former-Member that she isn't having the best time of it right now. I'd feel a bit weird asking if she was okay though. When I was talking things over with my Mrs, my Mrs did say to ask her or her boss if she's okay. But wouldn't that be crossing the line? I don't know. It's just the lack of communication which bothers me the most.

If it was me, I would ring up and say something like:
"X is my support worker and I haven't seen her for 6 weeks and I was just wondering if she was okay and if I could see someone else while she was not feeling well? I have a NDIS application due very soon and I urgently need some assistance with it."
Or something like that......
50% focus on her welfare, 50% focus on your needs.

I understand @Queenie you may feel bad about going to her supervisor but you need to do what is best for her. If she has lived experience and not coping well, then perhaps she needs to step back for a bit and let someone else take over for her for ahwile.

I know it is sometimes hard to make that call but I think you need to put yourself first and what helps you the best.
