Is Dementia Mental Illness? It's a disease of the mind so i'm hoping i still belong here. If not for that - today at the DR he was asked if he gets depression - dad answered "yes I do get depressed" It's hard to read with dad's early vascular dementia.
Around Christmas i moved in with my parents as mum was unable to manage hersef let alone continue as dad's carer. She was end stage cancer and died in hospital palliative care only 19 days after i arrived 😞 I was shocked how sick she became in the 2months since my last three week trip.. My goodness - what a fighter she was. My two younger brothers were dropping in a couple of times a day & helped with transport, bills & shopping - but could not stay in the house.longer than 30min - becoming restless... (probably the MI-Sz / drug related) and they were wearing thin. getting angry.. Mum was so difficult / hurtful during my last stay to help, i was reluctant to come again unless she asked me to. It was hard for her but necessary. The first attempt to drive the 1200km i ran off the road & badly crashed my car - a 'Write Off' Sore bones & shellshot - I had to rest a few days before flew down.
I hit the floor running - household duties, neals & loads of patient reassurance for mum. Even giving her a bell. Wasnt easy looking them both, clearly dad had been neglected for sone time.
I was still in the bad books for reporting him as a medically 'unfit' driver during my last stay. They fought it and gad x2 doctors confer ( why not done before is beyond me).
So here i am, feeling alone with 'toxic family' threatened by my presence, the loss of my mum, a dad in grief, with early vascular dementia, diabetes, heart disease, spinal injury - poor mobility, bad incontinence. Its full on some days. Not just the cleaning up but all the medical appointments. Especially since mum had understandablly got behind on things like optometrist, pidiatrist... even the GP...
Just looking for support as feeling somewhat shattered after only x5 weeks. Big day today.
I am happy to do an art journal page with you, step by step, through the Art Class thread if you want ?

Re: Depression Dementia Dad
Visited dad, took him Bonanza DVD & watched it with him on my laptop. Loves his Westerns. Said he was anxious 'cause nobody visited 2days, When Bro4 told me he hadn't been IP since he yelled at staff, 4 days ago, thought I'd better go. At least this time he didn't have his bags packed to go home, or chip me for everything. Cleaned up his dresser etc
People presume the NCAT tribunal decision not granting me guardianship is about something I did wrong... even silence here on the matter is deafening, but there are many other factors weighing their decision. I'm so tired of defending myself. Where's these backstabbing siblings for dad now? They don't visit. Poor dad. Oh well.

People's presumptions are often wrong @Former-Member ... especially when they have not taken the time to look at the facts.
When things are bleak it is hard to be open to what will come next. Carers Australia might be able to give you support to help you through the next little while - no shame in getting assistance from them to help you navigate the practicalities of your situation.

Re: Depression Dementia Dad
❤️❤️❤️@Former-Member ......
As far as I can see, it was always about trying to resolve sibling rivalry around your Dad, not about your care of him.
So glad to hear that you are recognising that you can let defensiveness go ...... you have nothing you have to explain to those who have hurt you this way, and the fact that they are not visiting your Dad says it all ......
Here and listening, stunned at the decision and heart-broken for you ..... but also waiting to see where you go from here. I would love to see you learning to paint, to art journal like this .....
.... and begin to sell your work at markets and things .....
Hugs n hugs. Here and listening, walking with you.

Re: Depression Dementia Dad
Thank you @Faith-and-Hope, and @Former-Member. I am not good at asking for help. The current situation is a prime example of why. Decision makers haven't even met dad let alone have the time of day for me. I have to let go. Next time he presses to go home I will tell him that I am sick and need an operation and will be unable to help him at home (and of cause there's nobody else), he is 84. The nurse had 'flippant' / dismissive attitude twd me last night. Complained about him not having pj's (said he had nothing), with her language barrier it took me a while to explain to her "at home dad never wears PJ's, he wears singlet & boxers to bed" and showed her the x5 in his drawer... She also mocked his orthotic boots deeming joggers better (which I quietly think so re the weight of the boots and bought in his fav old light weight joggers to see if he has less falls in them). He has bedsore back again, this is probably because they are not using the barrier cream he came in with and because the force him to sit by the nurses station, re high falls risk, but forget to put his special dva OT pressure area cusion from G s room 😞 I tried to explain this but 'attitude nurse' started talking about his pressure sore dressing. They have no idea what dads home nurses & I went through for months trying to get on top of his skin integrity breakdown this year. They just assume ignorance. I have little tolerance for such unprofessionalism, and think my tongue ble#ds from bighting it. Ha, they have also neglected to take his pDentures out at might do they have become embedded in gum overgrowth again and needs to go to dentist, a service the facility don't provide. Bro4, 3, 2 & invisible sis don't know this stuff. Poor dad. Oh well. Watching a Western was relaxing for both of us last H fht. Dad has lost the art of conversation as such (stutters & mixes up words), leans heavily on emotions & visuals. Bro4 doesn't 'get' this, and tells him to tell everyone he wants to go home, to fight for his s rights... It upsets him cause poor dad simply can't. Men in my family are hopeless with this stuff. It hurts. I find hro3&4 intimidating andvknow them being aroundvmum & dad a lot drove away the grankids & sis. Pitty they've put me in the same bundle. I'm tired.
F&H, should I go buy small kit of acrylic paints? And sketch book. Left my art starter kit up north grr, in the rush to go, SI & hopelessness. My girl loved art, maybe I can do it for her.

Re: Depression Dementia Dad
"Sinking rilvary around my dad" ??? No, this is way more complicated. They don't care about dad, only how they can use him to achieve their primary agenda - run me out of town!
No, this is not about dad, its about: - hatred toward me - refusal to accept me helping - refusal to negotiate anything - control - manipulation
- gossip
- ignorance - jealousy - lies - guilt! - selfishness - competition - unforgiveness - suspicions - misunderstanding - false blame - grief - lost childhoods - parents failure to put affairs in order - money - delusion - malice - revenge - etc...
They think I'm in their way, but they don't even know what it is they want, can give, or even connect with dad.
