Carer for adult stepchild and new to forum

Carer for adult stepchild and new to forum

As introduction I am a 6 year married stepmom with all adult kids. our 23 year old was almost finished with University when he stopped his anxiety and depression meds for some reason and went into a spiral. He dropped out February of 2017 and has done nothing since except watch television and play video games. He splits staying with us and his mom even though we are paying for an apartment lease he has never returned too. He now has student loans to pay back as well. He says he can't concentrate well enough to return to school or work a job, but he can to play those games. He has been back on medication all this time and been to a couple different therapists who only say give it time. In the meantime we have him to cook for and support plus my husband's mother who is in her 80's and trying to live alone with health issues and home maintenance. I work full time with another child in college and one getting married. I'm starting to have anxiety and depression problems myself taking care of everybody else. I hate to be resentful but I shouldn't have to figure out what to do for my stepson, his parents should be finding him better help and making an effort to get him to launch his life, even if it's not returning to college. He's good, kind, and pleasant to be around but he can't do this alone and I feel like everybody is waiting for him to do so.

Hi @SusieQ and welcome to the Forums, I'm one of the Moderators here. It sounds like you have had a very difficult time encouraging your stepson to get back on his feet after having had a tough time with his mental health and dropping out of uni - it must be frustrating feeling as though everyone else around him is sitting back and waiting for change when you feel as though he needs extra support to make that change.

I can hear that you're juggling alot between working full-time, your stepson's mental health, caring for your husband's mother, as well as two other children. Now, this constant juggling is impacting on your own mental health. I'm wondering if amidst all the care you provide for everyone around you whether you make time to look after yourself? You sound like a very giving person and I hope you make time to be kind to yourself also.

I'm glad that you've chosen to reach out here for support and I hope that other members who have been in similar situations to yours may be able to provide you with that support.

Take care,

River9

Thank you so much. Actually my adult son is takiing me on a weekend trip, just the two of us, this weekend so I'm really excited to get away and spend time with him! Myy stepson has gone to his mother's this week. I did get the spirit up to tell my husband if stepson is going to continue to sit at home then I need him to rotate between parents every other week because I need some time for myself. I think that is fair. Stepson has a meeting with a new psychiatrist Monday and my husband has agreed with me he must go and give input so the dr. kknows what we see as well as what stepson tells him to get a full picture. I am very hopeful we can find a new path and help!
