Supporting my wife who lives with Borderline Personality Disorder while maintaining self care.

Supporting my wife who lives with Borderline Personality Disorder while maintaining self care.

This thread is a follow on (or starting over) from my previous thread Caring for a wife with borderline personality disorder – sequel to diary of wife's hospital stay, I wanted to start over and in order to leave all the trauma and negativity of last year behind me and start fresh.

Those of you who have been following our family journey will know that after a number of hospital admissions for my darling I was encouraged by my councillor to implement some boundaries (lovingly implemented guidelines, not rules to be enforced) as well as self-care for myself as what we were doing was clearly not working and my health was /still is being affected.

Well after a smoother than expected start the boundaries and self-care were forgotten with my darling having a complete melt down and further lengthy hospital admissions due to high risk of self harm and a genuine attempt to leave us. The last 6 months particularly have been quite difficult for us all. S2 particularly had a lot of issues at school during this time and is currently seeing a councillor.

The purpose of this new thread is to again document our journey of healing, working on implemented boundaries and commitment to self care. As with the previous thread this is so that I can have a visual plan for myself with some accountability to follow through with plans in place and in the hope that it may help others in similar situations to ours. And so that I can track our progress. This was especially helpful in the last thread leading up to Christmas when I was feeling down about our current position to review what I had written and see just how far we have come.

@Former-Member darling has a GP app this week. I have requested she discuss an new pdoc referral. She has not seen pdoc for a while because I have not made one for her. I have been trying to encourage more self care and responsibilitiy. Contemplating seeing if she will be amiable to me attending the *GP app with her because she struggles to articulate how she is actually feeling.. (I can relate to that).

Meds remain locked away but I will be more diligent with what I do with the key. (Keep it on me). Even when things are well I don't have the emotional strength to leave them out.

At this morning's ride there were a number of people wearing 'in memory of' shirts.

Discovered some emotions are still very close to the surface 😥

@Determined

I am of the view that if on psych drugs (particularly the heavy duty ones) and even with shared care, due to the cyclical nature of MI that 6 monthly reviews are desirable. I still write my observations down - taking notes at present as Mr Darcy not doing so well with latest med change. Thinking we might need an earlier appt for him.

Holding together so far @Former-Member

Not sure how long that will last though.

Children nagging not helping an already on edge darling.

My being able to work at home is helping however. Juat sitting near me = darling not feeling as much like she has been left to it. (With the children) and not feeling like she is left at home while I am 'out having a good time'

Had a first meeting with a new counsellor today. (Via phone unfortunatly).

I am confident that this lady seems a good fit. Easy to talk to and enquiring what my goals are rather than jumpimg into the pre recorded mindfulness message.

Added bonus (feel kind of bad calling it that) is that counsellor has close family contact with BPD so a greater emotional understanding from a loved ones point if view.

Kind of looking forward to rather than dreading the next meeting now. Have a general direction plotted and I for the first time have an opportunity to write down some key points that I want to address for some clearer direction.

Almost every attempt at counselling so far for me has been during a time of crisis with darling so all focus has been on how I can support family and others rather than dealing with legacy issues for myself. (Out of necessity based on conditions at that time). Different approach this time. And some one who is happy with that different approach.

And that is not ment to take away at all from the work of previous counsellors. Each experience has been valued at the time.
